    [Xbox]

    The Cave

It's a Xbox 360 game that is a bit different in the way there is 7 characters but only 3 playable so you have to play it a few times to play each characters special area and then there is common areas also. Short enough if you were to just play it once but not really when you play each character. I managed to get the achievement for not dying throughout a playthrough such an annoying thing to do as I did die many times but when straight to dashboard so had to replay the same thing many times. I died doing even simple things like climbing down a ladder as the character would just drop to their death rather than grabbing the ladder.

More of a cinematic game but I thought it was good. Some shooting galleries were annoying but the game didn't outstay its welcome. In fact I wouldn't mind a sequel though I know it's unlikely to happen. Few questions I'm interested enough to want to see answered.

I really liked the world it set up and would like to see a sequel too although I doubt it will get it since people complained that it was too short with hardly any gameplay.

Concrete Genie. Short game but, again, doesn't overstay its welcome unless trying to 100% it.
Nice wee game and like I was saying in the PS forum, I enjoy games like this or Rain.

Farming Simulator. Completed and platinumed. This is my game of the year so far which is not bad for game I picked up on PS+. It’s really addictive – there was one day where I sat and played for 24 hours straight without sleep or food lol No, it technically doesn’t have an end credits but the trophy list – which even the developers include in the main menu - acts as completion so, yeah.

I guess I like it because you’re truly rewarded for your efforts and there is a sense of pride watching your humble little piece of land evolve into a bustling farm with animal pens, silos and workers all over the place. I’m not someone who obsesses over technology /hardware either but even I got giddy whenever I upgraded from acquiring the bare minimum vehicles to the best tractors, harvesters and seeders in the in-game shop because I was only able to purchase those things as a result of my hard work. On that note, it exposes how efficient you are at money management e.g. when to rent and when to buy, what jobs to take on that will be worth your time. I am proud to say most days I made a profit over loss. :D

Technically, I’m surprised the game runs so well with all the moving parts. The fact that you can go into the menu and the game is still running seamlessly in the background without any hiccups is amazing. The accessibility options are plentiful and really help tailor your experience. For the hardcore farmer you can turn on stuff like weeds and plant withering for that extra immersive experience.

I mostly enjoyed taking care of, breeding and selling animals because it required you to take all the knowledge you've learned at that point (cultivating, seeding, harvesting, turning grass into hay etc) and apply that to taking care of your animals under pressure. By "pressure", I mean because when you don't take care of your animals they don't produce and therefore you're losing money, so in this game time is literally money.

I appreciated the attention to detail when it came to animal behaviour too. For instance, the more the animals breed the more they consume and the more often you’ll need to maintain them. If animals make mess with food you can put it back in the feeding trough and the food meter actually goes up. Just little details like that again add to the immersion.

I also dug the soundtrack. It’s not normally my type of music but because a lot of the artists are unfamiliar the music almost feels like its part of the world, as if you could only hear this selection for this particular game.

Perhaps the only negative is that the game is very inside baseball and literally tells you nothing lol. When you go on to YouTube for tutorials the uploader acts as if everyone watching is a veteran just looking for a few extra money making tips. It’s hilarious because in the comment section you’ll find exasperated PS+ owners pleading for anyone to tell them what even half of the stuff the uploader said in passing means. Made me feel like I was not taking crazy pills. :D There is a dedicated tutorial section in the menus which is a must if you want to know where to start, but even then it only teaches you the basics; the rest you have to figure out on your own. So yeah, it’s hard to get into at first as it has a steep learning curve but once you’re in you’re in.

Overall, thoroughly enjoyable. My respect for farmers really went up playing this. It must be a tough job that would take tremendous willpower and determination. If you like games where grinding is the game but the grind is actually fun then you'll like Farming Simulator.

Minecraft. Completed and platinumed. I never played OG Minecraft but decided to give supposedly the most successful game of all time a go on the PS4. Technically, defeating the Ender Dragon is “completion” in the vanilla game which is why I've included it. This will be short and somewhat controversial: the game is fine when played with friends but overrated by today’s standards and boring solo. No Man’s Sky does it better. Also, if you didn’t purchase Minecraft before a certain date tough titties because you’re locked out of all DLC multiplayer trophies now. How Sony allows this sort of developer stupidity to continue is beyond me.

One of the classic Nintendo games to add to the list:

    PC

Dark Souls III: Very enjoyable as expected; took my time with the playthrough (approx 50 hours) as I know I won't play it again due to backlog.

    PS4

Doom: The 2016 game; just loved it! Manic mayhem throughout.
Firewatch: It was ok but a bit of a letdown after all the rave reviews TBH :(
Uncharted: Drakes' Deception As the earlier two, really good fun. Just like being in a blockbuster summer movie! Not much of a challenge but's that's OK after Dark Souls III... :D

    Nintendo Switch

Super Mario Galaxy: Part of the Mario 3D All-Stars collection; wow this game is still very beautiful! How is it 13 years old? LOVED IT. Never played it before so all new to me; had played its sequel on the Wii U.
Ori and the Blind Forest: Really enjoyed it, fairly short so didn't get stale at all. Loved the Metroidvania elements.

    Shinobi

By beat I mean I credit fed the **** out of it but it still counts.

Sega basically ripped off rolling thunder and made it ninja themed but actually managed to make an even better game than Namco's classic. Shinobi is one of the all time great arcade games. Wonderful stage design that's tough but fair. Great bosses as well. I really had a blast with this game and it really is one of the best arcade games of all time.

    Dragon Quest 2

A massive step up in complexity from the very basic original. Really surprised how much I enjoyed this game. Battles are now with multiple enemies rather than single enemies. You also eventually have a party of 3 rather than the party of 1 in the original.

What surprised me the most was how much strategy this game had to its battles. Status effect spells and buffs/debuffs are essential to beating this game and very effective. It's something even modern RPGs, with exceptions like Shin Megami Tensei, get wrong. It's still quite simple but at around 20 hours in length it ends before the game gets stale.

It's a good insight into how JRPGs would develop and take from this game. It's easy to see why the series became so popular in japan with a second entry that improves so much on the first game.

Absolutely brilliant game. I played it before on PC and it's still a brilliant game and I hope legion will be as good.

I finished the Resident Evil HD Remaster yesterday and I found it mostly a frustrating experience. I know it's an old game and an old remaster but it really shows how much better game design is these days. The camera angle changing is infuriating. I also played as Chris and found the 6 item slots ludicrous, I spent so much time trekking back and forth to my item box. The puzzles are enjoyable so clearly there's a good game in there but the game design is too frustrating. I didn't bother with a playthrough as Jill because of it.

    Command & Conquer

Played this in the excellent remastered collection. While it's a little archaic compared to modern RTS games it is still a heap of fun and very playable. A lot of this comes down to the excellent level design. It's usually pretty difficult to build up an army to steamroll the enemy but most levels have clever routes you can exploit to win. Finished Nod and GDI. Played through all the mission other than the final missions as they are exhausting so only did the one variant. Still have the covert ops and console exclusive levels but will probably jump into red alert.

The remaster really is amazing. Looks gorgeous and it's packed full of content.

    Megaman X

Have never actually beaten this game before now. It's a perfect example of why the 16-bit era was so good. Really builds and evolves the NES Megaman formula to the next level. Beating levels now affects other levels and can change stages dramatically adding an extra layer of depth to what level order you pick. It's a shame the later X games never followed up on this. They also added lots of worthwhile secrets to hunt out in the levels. It's just a top class 16-bit action game and one of the best from the era.

It was alright of a game I suppose. I must of had it on too hard a difficulty as there was some tricky fights and then fights in vehicle was hard too I suppose. But got through it in the end.

    GAME Air Combat
    PLATFORM PlayStation

I feel like I never gave combat flight shooters a fair go growing up. The only games in the Ace Combat series I've ever owned was Air Combat and The Belkan War, both of which I never played a lot of, and didn't enjoy that much (I also lost my old Air Combat disc so I repurchased it recently).

    Overall verdict on the original game;

It was really fun, but it was very barebones. I suppose I can't complain about that, but the biggest challenge for me was trying to play it with the D-pad. My thumb is kind of sore as a result.

    GAME Ace Combat 2
    PLATFORM PlayStation

Much, much better than the original. Finally was able to use the analog stick to maneuver, though the game teases you by allowing you to use the right analog stick to navigate menus and you can even calibrate both sticks in the settings. Beyond that, you can't use the right stick in-game at all. I think the dual-analog controller allows it, as it has 3 settings; the 3rd mimicking that of the dual joystick controls. Dualshock isn't dual-analog supported with this one.

As for the game itself; it was a huge improvement. I really enjoyed the replay-mechanic, and being able to see a cinematic camera after you shoot enemies down was also cool for the time. I found it a little easier than the original, however, I dunno what it is. Maybe it was the aforementioned analog stick that made it simpler. But there wasn't a lot of mission-failures. Maybe a few but no more than a single-hand's worth. I died a lot on Air Combat from dumb mistakes.

A fantastic shooter and still stunning looking for a game 13 years old. It dragged on in one or two places (Core & Ascension) but was otherwise a terrific experience.

    Dark Souls
I quite liked this one. The combat and level design were great. There's not much of a story to speak of and its a little rough around the edges but it makes up for it in a pretty heavy atmosphere. I might pick up the second at some point.

    I know, I skipped Ace 3. I wasn't enjoying at all.

I really, really enjoyed this one, though. Definitely the best one I've played so far. I still have a lot of others in the main series to get through - the next one being Ace Combat 05.

GAME Ace Combat 5: Squadron Leader/The Unsung War
    PLATFORM PlayStation 4

Wow. I didn't realise until after beating this that the Ace Combat series had a lore.

Storywise this was pretty good, despite the fact I could barely keep up with the names of all the characters.

Gameplaywise I kinda preferred AC04's style. I'm not much of a team-player so I didn't care much for the wingman mechanic. The only time I really needed them was the final mission. Definitely felt like the longest as well.

Don't get me wrong I still loved the hell out of it.

One major thing I liked was the removal of those "epic" missions from Ace 4, where I would sometimes be on a mission that would involve reaching a certain score within a ridicuously generous time limit. The missions never ended once I reached the required score, they continued until the timer went to zero, this would sometimes be as long as 20 mins. Delighted they weren't in this one

The Return of the Obra Dinn.

Managed to solve some fates on my own but nowhere near the total.
Ended up using a walkthrough and although I joked about it, I think I would've needed a crime board to figure them all out. Or would've helped to be able to go quickly between scenes

GAME Ace Combat: The Belkan War
    PLATFORM PlayStation 2

I think if this game was made today, it would be an expansion DLC for Ace Combat 5. That's basically what this felt like.

Doesn't take it away from being a decent enough game but that's as far as it went for me: decent.

GAME Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation
    PLATFORM Xbox 360

I was a bit taken aback by the 30fps-lock at first but I got used to it after 2 missions. I found this one to be a little all over the place. The visuals were obviously a huge improvement (save for the character models) but I didn't like any of the main cast themselves. From a gameplay standpoint it's more Ace Combat, but when it came to combat itself, it was a lot easier, especially with the inclusion of the new squadron-command feature which, in my books, was way more streamlined than in Ace Combat 5. Once the bar was high enough, all I had to do was hold the "Allies Attack" command and half my work was done for me. There were times where the missions got way too hectic. I blame that on an Xbox 360 game taking advantage of the technology to shove more content onto the screen at once. Sometimes less is more, though.

Overall it was good but I still found Ace Combat 5 and Belkan War to be superior when compared to them. Ace Combat 04 remains my favourite.

Well 27 years later, I've finally gone through all 3 of the episodes of the original Doom. Still good simple fun.

Just finished my second playthrough of Resident Evil 2. Really enjoyed it. I never played the original so I can't compare it to that but I can compare it to the Resident Evil Remaster and it's an infinitely better game due to the improved camera angles and inventory management. Excellent game. I'll move onto Resident Evil 3 in the near future.

Batman Arkham Knight[PS4] - a very good game although a few too many BS areas especially involving the batmobile. The biggest plus for me was Mark Hamill as the joker. He was genuinely hilarious at times. [edit]

BioShock [PS4]- what an absolute masterpiece of a game. Enjoyed this so much. A definite must play if you like FPS/Horror.

BioShock 2 [PS4] - another fantastic game in the series, as enjoyable as the first with a few loose ends tied up.

Ratchet and Clank [PS4] - an excellent remake of an all time classic.

Everybody's Gone to the Rapture [PS4] - an interesting storyline but effectively a slow walking sim.

Journey [PS4] - such a beautiful game, especially when you meet a companion en route. Very relaxing.

The Last of Us Part II [PS4] - Loved it, but perhaps not as much as the first. The one criticism that I'd have is that it seemed overly long with some unnecessary padding. Damn this is a tense game by the way.

Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration [PS4] - The female Nathan Drake and a cracking action/adventure game. You know what to expect if you've played others in the series.

Stick it to the Man [PS4] - This is one of those hidden gems. A 2.5D platform puzzler with beautiful cartoony graphics and plenty of humorous dialog.

Assassin's Creed Syndicate [PS4] - At €9.99 an absolute bargain. Really enjoyed this game. London looks beautiful and full of life. The game is very easy though and gets even easier as you upgrade your skills and weapons.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 (remastered). Replaying this brought back warm fuzzy feelings. The campaign is still superb, so many great moments plus Hans Zimmer’s music is *chef’s kiss*. It’s aged even better than COD4 (which only really had two stand out missions in All Ghillied Up and One Shot One Kill). Veteran difficulty is harder than modern COD games but more forgiving than COD4. There’s a sense that they actually play tested veteran difficulty on this one lol. This is what Call of Duty campaigns are all about i.e. great level design, memorable characters and interesting story. Some of the levels like defending Burger Town and the Favela missions give you so much freedom as to how to approach it. It’s what separates COD from other first person shooter campaigns. I haven’t platinumed it yet as I got sidetracked with all the new games coming out but hope to plat in the new year. Obviously, if you like COD campaigns this is essential. If you’ve never played it but like first person shooters then this is a definite recommend.

Watch Dogs Legion. Completed and platinumed. It hurts to say that I cannot recommend this game at full price and thankfully I won’t have to as it has been heavily discounted since its release for good reason. At its core it’s a really fun, addictive game but it’s clearly a next gen concept trying its damnedest to run on last gen consoles and it shows. It crashes consistently, trophies are bugged, loading screens are out of control, and missions break on you for seemingly no reason. Ubisoft has released some patches addressing these issues with no luck and they’ve had to push back multiplayer to focus on getting the base game stable.

I am somewhat sympathetic to Ubisoft here because, unlike say Cyberpunk, nearly everything you see on screen is interactable from the different drone types flying all over the city, the cargo drones, the cars, the shops, side activities, and finally the NPCs – all while the graphics are fairly decent. That’s a lot going on for any system to handle, let alone last gen consoles.

But if you can get through the technical issues you'll see that where the game shines is in its most marketable feature which is the NPC recruitment system. The construction worker is very OP so in theory you could just use them throughout but the game trusts you to experiment with different strengths and weaknesses of the characters. The non-lethal approach is encouraged and most enemies, except for gang members, won’t shoot unless you do. There is a respect for human life that you don’t see in many games and I think that’s down to this concept that anyone is playable and therefore has a real life.

There are lots of water cooler moments too because of the RNG nature of the whole thing. I described this moment in the dedicated thread but thought I’d share again:
A prostitute I helped wanted to speak to me after the mission was done.
When I found her she was being picked on by some thugs.
I beat the thugs up and the prostitute thanked me and joined DeadSec.
After my little scrap, a game developer lady nearby got ran over by a car and she was injured so bad she was taken to hospital.
I wanted to help her so I went to Guy's hospital to speed up her treatment - which I believe I could do because I have a few medics on my team with that ability.
Whilst doing this I noticed one of the thugs I beat up coming out of the hospital effing and blinding at me.
I profiled him and identified that I had, indeed, put him there.
Still angry at me, the thug decided to push me around a bit so I beat his b*tch ass down again there and then.
The paramedics nearby came to his aid. He has 2 thumbs down for DeadSec now.

With the ‘play as anyone’ feature, Ubisoft basically turned NPCs into loot.
It’s like recruiting the character with the best look, best voice and best perks in itself becomes the “perfect roll” and for me that’s what kept it interesting. Also, the recruitment missions never got repetitive just because of the many different ways you could take them on and there is enough location variety to not to get bored of the environments. London is noticeably scaled down but nobody was expecting a complete recreation; it’s just jarring because I’m a Londoner.

I smiled at the little things like the way the character types will murmur different things when you’re roaming the world. For instance, one of my favourite recruits was a randy guy who frequently attends singles events and he is always muttering about sex.:D Also, sometimes when you profile an NPC type you haven’t profiled before your robot A.I. companion, Bagley, and whatever character you’re using at the time will start talking about them. It’s little touches like that that show what this game could have been if they had just delayed it for next gen only and went all the way with the whole concept.

The main story is quite good, in fact some might say that it peaks too early with a brilliant story mission involving you exploring a creepy mansion and trying to discover what happened. What you do discover is genuinely disturbing, almost tonally out of place, and the choice you make at the end of that quest line is interesting – except it seems to have no bearing on the overall story line (I suspect a last minute rewrite to make it more linear). If this particular story line had been the entire game I wouldn’t have minded but Ubisoft had to have their typical lieutenant takedown structure before the final Big Bad.

Alas, the 'play as anyone' mechanic is a solid foundation but it's not quite the revolutionary game changer I wanted it to be. Hopefully, with the death of last gen Ubisoft can expand on this feature a lot more, that's if they don't just throw out the baby with the bathwater. Would recommend when all patched up.
