    Completed:

    Alan Wake (PC)

    Interesting story & presentation.

Loved the songs, though the ambient soundtrack is pretty bland.

    Now on to CONTROL: AWE

GAME Grand Theft Auto: Vice City
    PLATFORM PC

I was trying to be all OCD with this and wanted to have everything outside of the main story complete, so that when I finished the final mission, I could get the 100% completion.

I forgot to do two off-road missions, damn it anyway :pac:

Nevertheless it was nice to go through this again.

The days passed vs. play time ratio confuses me, though. I don't know how play time is calculated (maybe it's literal play-time) but the days passed equivalates to 34 hours, which sounds about right. It didn't feel like I played this game for 20 hours. Doesn't matter I guess.

Brilliant game well worth a playthrough and I'm quite proud of myself for not using a guide. Every new area you move into is another challenge and I was just sitting there thinking how to get through that area. Even last night in bed I was still thinking how will I get through the area I am now in. It requires a bit of thinking out side the box. I was a bit surprised when the credits rolled as I knew I had more stuff to do.

The task when the game is finished is completionist. I might try to 100% it but I will see for now as I was playing this game a lot. I have 33 hours on the in game clock.

    Observation

Picked this up for a tenner recently, saw trailers for it and looked different. Was a nice detox from Nier in forms of length, wrapped it up in around 6-7 hours.

Not a horror per say , but very atmospheric enjoyed it all tbh and thought the ending was quite good.

    THPS1+2

Got this when it came out and have dipped in and out of it between other games, but with the Ps5 on the horizon and demon souls sitting in its box, I decided now would be the time to finish it. Overall its brilliant controls in it have been updated, I started off with thps3. Really enjoyable didn't go online with it but its so smooth and fluid. Also easy to pick up and put down even for 30 mins.

Quite close to finishing moonlighter also, I honestly think this is most amount of games I have finished in one year.

    Half-Life: Alyx

This is pretty much a total game changer in terms of immersion. Just an incredible experience. The simulation of the world hasn't been done better in any game. As with all Valve games the game is just a series of setpieces strung together but each set piece is unique and perfectly designed. I also appreciate how the game takes its time and builds up to its best set pieces. Everything about the game just feels right, from the gravity gloves to how the weapons reload. It was great to finally get to play a new half-life game after so many years.

I got the platinum for Days Gone last night. I enjoyed the game a lot, it's very much a different type of open world game. Having said that though, I think the story is too long, the narrative is not strong or interesting enough to be that long.

The gameplay is very enjoyable though and I look forward to the inevitable sequel.

    Moonlighter

A great little zelda clone, with shop mechanics. addictive with the looting and selling of stuff you get in the dungeons. You get a bit too much money after the third dungeon, and I was able to power my way through to the end in one last sitting.

    Enjoyable all the same though

    GAME Driver 2 (RE)
    PLATFORM PC

This was a new, reverse-engineered version of Driver 2 that came out recently. Still in it's alpha stage at the moment but it was impressively done in my books.

You have to dump your copy of the game, and then download the RE files and replace all the disc files. It adds true widescreen support, a solid 30fps, bug-fixes, and allows the removal of the 2-disc requirement.

Graphically it's the exact same game, but with a lot of improvements that were, in my books, 20 years too late. The game is horrible to play on PS1. This was a breath of fresh air. You can add bilinear filtering if that's your thing.

If you're a old school Driver fan, I recommend this.

    suKGqeHl.jpg

As for the game itself. There are a lot of things that haven't aged well, such as the unforgiving mechanic that fails you if you're too far away from a fleeing car. The distance necessary to fail the mission is way too short.

And there are some missions where anyone chasing you will have the impact of a wrecking ball at speed.

It was a product of its time, and some missions take a lot of trial and error.

Due to this version of the game, it took me a total of about 5 hours to beat (would've taken me less if I hadn't constantly failed missions a lot) as playing it on PS1, with the low frame rate and heavy slowdown, makes the game extremely long, with the trial-and-error included. This was a breeze in comparison.

    Simulacra

Kind of a Story book game , its played from the perspective of a smartphone, it was in essence a detective/puzzle game , centered around a missing girl not too long either around 5 or 6 hours.
I enjoyed it the acting was a bit corny at times as there are FMVs in it.

Was lucky enough to get a PS5 so am slowly eeking my way through demon souls so hopefully have that finished before cyberpunk comes out, if it comes out that is on the tenth of December.

    Megaman 6

That's the NES Megaman games out of the way. A very late NES game (1993, same year as Megaman X on the SNES) and it shows. Looks gorgeous with very little flickering and slowdown. However after 6 of these you can tell the developers were a little bit sick of them. It has some of the fairest boss fights in the game but also the weapons are pretty awful with little use for them. Still it's a pretty top tier NES game it just pales next to Megaman 2 and 3.

Not sure whether to stick with the main series and hit 7 and 8 next or go to X.... I'm thinking X.

    Mass Effect 2

Good game wouldn't call it my favourite game from the Xbox 360/PS3 generation as two boards members called it. It is decent but nothing ground breaking. I will give myself a break before I move on to the third installment.

    Picross S2

Pretty bare bones Picross entry. It's got the usual normal Picross and Mega Picross puzzles. The new addition are the picture picross puzzles which add absolutely nothing to the game and are just a few smaller puzzles that make up a bigger picture.

Looking forward to S3 which adds the colour picross puzzles which are excellent.

Batman Arkham Knight[PS4] - a very good game although a few too many BS areas especially involving the batmobile. The biggest plus for me was Mark Hamill as the joker. He was genuinely hilarious at times. [edit]

BioShock [PS4]- what an absolute masterpiece of a game. Enjoyed this so much. A definite must play if you like FPS/Horror.

BioShock 2 [PS4] - another fantastic game in the series, as enjoyable as the first with a few loose ends tied up.

Ratchet and Clank [PS4] - an excellent remake of an all time classic.

Everybody's Gone to the Rapture [PS4] - an interesting storyline but effectively a slow walking sim.

Journey [PS4] - such a beautiful game, especially when you meet a companion en route. Very relaxing.

The Last of Us Part II [PS4] - Loved it, but perhaps not as much as the first. The one criticism that I'd have is that it seemed overly long with some unnecessary padding. Damn this is a tense game by the way.

Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration [PS4] - The female Nathan Drake and a cracking action/adventure game. You know what to expect if you've played others in the series.

Stick it to the Man [PS4] - This is one of those hidden gems. A 2.5D platform puzzler with beautiful cartoony graphics and plenty of humorous dialog.

    GAME American McGee's Alice
    PLATFORM Xbox 360

My fiancée absolutely loves the sequel (Alice: Madness Returns), and she encouraged me to try it. I said I'd like to play the original one first. I found Madness Returns on Game Pass, and funnily enough, the original game is included. So I started it about 2 days ago.

Finished it there now, and I can't say it was one of the better games I've played. The platforming is woeful and the action sections are not that great either. It's very much a game of its time (2000), extremely trial-and-error based and very repetitive.

The last few chapters of the game were horribly padded out and very tedious.

I was starting to get bored of it.

Thankfully the save system was decent. You literally save from where you stand and you can load into that exact spot - there are no checkpoints aside from the beginning of each stage, so saving is a must if you're new. I found myself saving after almost every set-piece, or every time I made decent progress in a boss fight. The save system is very much reminiscent to that of a save-state mechanic.

I'm hoping the better-known sequel is an improvement. She swears by it, and she's the pickiest, fussiest gamer I know. So it might be decent.

The sequel is one of those games that the reviewers were spot on with at release and the fan adoration of it I find utterly baffling. It isn't bad but it's far from the best thing ever some people make it out to be. The visual style will appeal to some people but the platforming and action is firmly in the middling pile.

I thought the platforming in the sequel was atrocious. It has all the worst elements of 3D platforming from the era and playing it now is an exercise in tedium. The Burtonesque art style feels very dated now as well.

My other half absolutely loves games/films/tv/art with this visual style. I can see why she'd like this. And even though the platforming/action is not the best, it's still fine in my books. I went into this game with no higher expectation than "please be better than the first", and so far, it really is.

I'm about half an hour into the sequel now and the platforming still isn't great but it's a huge improvement to the original. The original had a really bad delay when hitting the jump button that made precise platforming nearly impossible. There is still a little delay here, but it's not as bad.

It also improves on the original in other aspects as well (lock-on being a big highlight for me) and actually being able to hit enemies with precision, as opposed to the floaty, wavy attacks you do in the other one.

No, it's not the best, but I never expected it to be.

No, it's not the best, but I never expected it to be.

I played about halfway through the sequel before I realised my life is short and I gave up on it because I actually want to do my best to try and enjoy what time I have on this mortal coil.

I tried about half an hour of the first game because it was free with the sequel on the PS3 as well. You're a braver soul than me to see that through to completion.

I play a lot of arcade shooters and stuff that I finish over and over so I dunno if they count really!

    Black Mesa

Great remake of Half Life. I waited until its final release so I could do all the Xen stuff and it was worth it. I've read they're going back over the earlier stages to improve the visuals in line with Xen!

    The Last of Us Remastered

Bought on PS3 at launch and shelved. Bought on PS4 launch and shelved... until lockdown. Not mad about the actual gameplay, which is much like all of Naughty Dog's gameplay

The Last of Us Part 2

Despite that, I got the sequel, again at launch and played it on and off only finishing it recently. This is definitely my last Naughty Dog game. It felt too long, the gameplay is just no fun. I remember using listen mode on the last few stages, seeing tonnes of white shapes and just thinking "**** this" and I shot the crap out of them all. I preferred the second half, story wise, but overall the characters and their motivations felt like frustrating melodrama

    Luigi's Mansion 3

This game is just mean. I dunno how many times I'd collect an elevator button and be holding my breath for some annoying diversion like the cat or some mice to draw about a frustrating to control experience

    Paper Mario: Origami King

This one I loved. Took a while to get going but the dialogue and levels and level themes mostly hit the mark. Could barely put it down for 30 hours. Certainly the reason why it took so long to finish The Last of Us Part 2

    Super Mario Galaxy

Still one of the best games EVER. Another one I couldn't stop playing until I got 120 stars. Going through it all over again with Luigi can wait though...

    Soul Blazer

A SNES title I missed back in the day. Well, I say that but I remember renting it once with Axelay from a small stop beside Superquinn and not playing it much.

This game is pretty basic, but there's something compelling about freeing villagers to fill in more map and the music is great!

I must admit though, some of the progression was quite confusing and an FAQ was needed at least twice!

    Super Mario World

I do this every year. This time on Switch's SNES app

I think the first game's biggest mistake was making a platformer out of the Quake 2 engine.

I looked up the HLTB for it, and it said 8-10 hours. Had it been any longer than 12 I wouldn't have bothered. I play games about 5 hours a day so that's why I didn't mind playing through it. I honestly don't know how anyone enjoyed this back in the day. Surely back in 99/00/01 there were better games than this (I'm referencing the high review scores it got).

I thought the game ran off the Unreal Engine? That's the logo that came up when I booted the game.
Never mind I didn't see you wrote "first game"

Was actually Quake 3 tech apparently.

Still powering Call of Duty :)

It was a 2000 game. The reviews it got were due to it having a mature story for it's time and a unique visual style. The maturity of the content of course is a bit pathetic in modern context but back then we were knee deep in emo culture.

Also the PC and console platforms were very unique back then, the type of games on each platform were very different from one another. I remember Alice being called the PC's Mario 64 back then which is laughable in retrospect but also there wasn't much else like it on PC (except the vastly superior Rayman 2 but I won't get into pedantics.

It really is a product of it's time. 3D games were a little bit janky until the Dreamcast and PS2 came along and engine got a lot more.... solid for lack of a better word so a game as janky as Alice was acceptable and the quick save of PC games made it more tolerable.

I loved Madness Returns. It's a bit clunky as a platformer, but overall a fun experience. If you liked Darksiders, you'd like it!

    Great story too!

I remember Sarah Michelle Gellar being talked about for the role of Alice in the planned film back after the first game came out. Played through both games myself and liked them.the platforming did feel very dodgy and so many invisible walls. I know it's Alice but a lot was very weird. Think there was talk of a third.
And just looking now, it turns out there were 2 shorts kickstarted and released. Must watch tomorrow

On another I just finished the game where it's kinda bug and kinda snack.
    I'm talkin' 'bout Bugsnax.
Liked it. Puzzly elements trying to figure out how to catch the Bugsnax. Though I guess could also be described as fetch quests.

    Demon souls Remake

My first PS5 game, Visually stunning on the new hardware, you can see how it was a blueprint for all the rest of the from soft games, seeing how it influenced both dark souls and bloodbourne, only gripe was that I found the bosses way to easy, but getting to the boss areas was actually the challenge. the Valley of defilement is awful though christ.

    The Order 1886.
More of a cinematic game but I thought it was good. Some shooting galleries were annoying but the game didn't outstay its welcome. In fact I wouldn't mind a sequel though I know it's unlikely to happen. Few questions I'm interested enough to want to see answered.
