Its more important that the billy roll has a No meat promise. Its a guarantee that only reclaimed animal tissue, offal and pulped skeletal cartridge is the main component in this heavenly meat-like product.

I don't care for the taste of offal, but it is supposed to be nutritionally superior to muscle meat.
Is Billy Roll healthier than ham?

There is a general saying about the foods (paraphrasing) and cooking:

"Don't use it if your grandmother would not recognise it"

Out of curiosity, how often do you cook with "Modified Maize Starch, Salt, Dehydrated Cheese (Milk), Concentrated Lemon Juice (contains Sulphites), Egg Yolk Powder, Flavourings (contains Celery, Milk), Stabiliser (Xanthan Gum)"

Like most bought processed foods, we have no idea how much went in, who prepared it, where it was prepared, where the ingredients were sourced and prepared, how much of it can you trust..the next big food scandal is only around the corner,

    - Modified Maize Starch (Corn Starch/Corn Flour): all the time. It's a basic thickening agent
    - Salt: Um, yes? Obviously?
    - Dehydrated Cheese : Dried Cheese? Yes.
    - Milk: Yes, having some in my tea as I type this
    - Concentrated Lemon Juice: Have it in my fridge in case I don't have fresh lemons
    - Egg Yolk Powder: Had eggs for breakfast. Not sure why you seem to be convinced that drying them is harmful
    - Xanthan Gum: Basic thickening agent. Useful for people who can't tolerate gluten.

How is the Maize Starch, modified?

Anyway, it's probably the sugar and salt content that might differ in an unhealthy way.

More importantly, it's much cheaper to make your own tomato sauce, possibly better for the environment maybe?
Less unnecessary things moving all over the world?

Definitely not. Unless you use your own tomatoes from your back garden, they are imported and by importing tomatoes you move much more mass than by importing dehydrated tomato concentrate or ready made tomato sauce. Also, you will be less energy efficient cooking them on the cooker rather than in an industrial cooking installation.

I will die on the hill for canned tomatoes, environment be damned.
I live on the stuff, not just for pasta.

And not fancy San Marzano either, Lidl canned tomatoes are really good.

You eat dried cheese! Bloody hell I'll get my coat. You missed out the cryptic "flavourings"..;)

Why put two types of thickening agents in your body when you do not need to? Empty calories with no nutritional value. I never said they were harmful but given the choice I prefer to keep my foods/ingredients simple with the least amount of overly processed ingredients as possible.

My point is that you can easliy make the same sauce yourself without the need for bulking agents and powders and "flavourings". I would rather not have xantham gum and modified starch in my food given a choice. Modified in what manner?

If you are using thickening agents on a regular basis especially white flour I would be a little concerned. In fact you should stay well away from white flour- it is no good.

It is your choice if you are happy putting all sorts of unknown products in your body from unknown sources made in an unknown location by unknown persons. Not my body.

To play devil's advocate, there is certainly a time (just in after work) and place when these things are convenient.

The price to pay is sometimes worth it.
But it should always be a quick replacement for the real thing, and not a staple.

I have never had carbonara, not even in a restaurant.

But I have eggs, pancetta, and spaghetti...

All I need now is cream. And mushrooms.

Indeed that is the reality for most of us.

We do not have the luxury of settling into a softly lit well appointed kitchen with all the ingredients measured out and crack out a Nigella Lawson special.

What do think they make pasta from?

I've come across some bizarre forms of orthorexia in my time but a fear of thickening agents is a new one.

Is Billy Roll healthier than ham?

    https://www.irishtimes.com/life-and-style/food-and-drink/what-is-a-billy-roll-1.3938217

The ingredients listed on the Billy Bear packaging are pork (66 per cent), water, pea starch, salt, pea protein, dextrose, salt replacers, spices, ascorbic acid, diphosphates, yeast extract, and sodium nitrite.

I suspect a lot the "pork" component falls under the description of pig meat which could be any part of the animal really. I'd say is mostly reclaimed pig meat which is all sorts of sh!te.

Jared carbonara sauces are sick! The horrible little processed bacon bits in the sloppy creamy sauce, I would rather starve than put it near me!
Homemade carbonara with egg yokes stirred in as the pasta is just taken off the heat so as not to overcook the egg is so delicious. Cant believe anyone would use a jar when its easier, cheaper and nicer to make from scratch. Probably healthier too.

So random one I know but can we get the general consensus on I know wait for it.. perhaps cream in carbonara?!

Its funny you mention billy roll, because something that's the whole go these days (and can cost a fortune to boot) is mortadella, which is basically billy roll with a few flecks of pistachio.

While you are right in general as regards processed food, the "granny wouldn't recognise it" axiom is a bit simplistic - for example, my granny would not have recognised rocket, which is perfectly good for you, whereas she would be very familiar with rashers, which contain ingredients far, far more harmful to human health than any of the ingredients listed above.

I always took the granny thing “in the spirit of” rather than a hard and fast rule.

First they came for the socialists...

Yea - but if you can get past the white scum oozing out of them ( more uses for your toilet roll stash - a few dabs will cure it) they taste DELICIOUS. mmmm

    .

dry cured bacon rashers do not have the "white scum"

and they do taste DELICIOUS. mmmm

edit : with cream cheese, on a toasted bagel.

The consensus is absolutely no eggs in carbonara. Its made with just cream, a half pound of salt and some billy roll!

    Mouth-watering fare.

I have some Billy Bear Roll in the fridge and was saving it for the mother-in-law, who's coming over to mine
for lunch tomorrow (she has no teeth to speak of, so she just sucks it dry).

However, having viewed your appetising pic, I'm now about to gorge on the pork infused slabs of tasty goodness, all by myself.

On an even more serious culinary note, according to my 'foodie' friend, your 'no eggs' in carbonara' injunction is bang on the money, and he follows Juventus, so there's the proof if proof were needed.
As for the cream, oh yes, gallons of the stuff...or as they say in Italy 'Molti litri'!

    Bellysimmo.

Same with pancake mix, this is only powdered egg and self raising flour and a load of synthetic chemicals to lengthen the ingredient list to make it look like a very complex product that took a lot of R&D.

Dont think anyone is trying to pass it off as witchcraft. More selling it ready made up as a time saver.
