Basically, Nphet will only allow non essential retail to open with additional restrictions. Thats as much as they are willing to give.

If the county rule is not lifted, people will start breaking the rules en mass on the run up to Xmas

NPHET want pubs and restaurants takeaway only, concerns over shopping centres oh and for travel to remain only within your county.

Essentially they disagree with every aspect of the government's plan.

    https://m.independent.ie/irish-news/news/restaurants-and-pubs-should-only-be-allowed-to-offer-takeaway-over-christmas-nphet-says-39796129.html

    Well there you have it

Basically after 8 weeks of level 3/5 the only thing NPHET would allow is retail with more curbs

They don't care about people's livelihoods or businesses

    Unreal stuff

They are going too far so they know that the government can't keep the restrictions, basically absolves them of any responsibility and imo credibility

I think it’s bonkers that we couldn’t open the pubs when we had single figure daily cases, but now they’re seriously considering opening them when we have 250 daily cases and we’re coming up to our busiest socialising holiday on the calendar.

Now, I wanted the pubs to open in the summer, and I enjoyed some very nice meals in the restaurants, so i’m certainly not a lockdown merchant, but I really think they’d be crazy to open them now. By all means, open them in January, but let’s try and get over our busiest time for socialising.

Why are they opening them with the plan to lockdown again a few weeks? The government have shown they don’t care about jobs or business - Covid is only game in town - so why start now, at the most dangerous time possible.

People saying people will just have house parties - yes some will - but some people are also very compliant (whether due to sense of wanting to do the right thing, or good old fashioned guilt), and by opening the pubs you’re also giving a green light to these people to go out and socialise. Some problem will be having parties regardless and there’s nothing you can do about those (well there is, but the will isn’t there).

Tbh, I find the idea of having another lockdown to look forward to in the new year even more bleak than having pubs and restaurants closed for Christmas. I’d be willing to have a nice quiet Christmas, knowing a vaccine is on the horizon and there’s much more positive things to look forward to in the new year.

Just because they’re supposed “experts” the weak amongst us think we all must show this lot deference and bend the knee.

Pal, we still have people defending the cervical cancer episode...

    "Increasingly the expert view. . . "

The facts have long since been established.

Why don't you contact the Chancellor of Austria, the Governor of New York or the Prime Minister of Greece with your "increasingly the expert view" opinions?

I'm sure they'll be delighted to ditch their experts and take on your views to get their schools open?

Over 1m people in this country are directly exposed to schools (those attending or working there) and more again indirectly exposed (those living with the former). Schools have been open for three months now. If were a major driver of transmission we would be seeing much greater growth, nevermind the decreases we have been experiencing for a month. If schools were a problem, we would be see huge numbers of clusters associated with them. We wouldn't need NPHET data to show it, there would be big numbers of cases/suspected cases from indivual school pupils and their families.

Show us the long established facts about schools. The places you mention who closed schools are the exceptions, everwhere else has kept them open and havehad different experiences with Covid, that should tell you all you need to know.

Corona viruses have been around forever. After 8 months if its latest instalment I think we can ditch the 'novel' as an excuse.

They got their 6 weeks now time to give a little back

Yes the virus is very nice to the paddies but hates the people in other countries such that their authorities have to close schools. . .

It's a simple reality accepted that schools open contribute to an increased number of cases because if this were not the case then all schools would be open worldwide.

We have decided to take on that contribution which has led to an average 370 cases per day average (over the past 14 days) after 35 days at level 5.

We would be well below 100 cases (NPHET's target by December 1st) if schools had closed on entry to level 5.

We have chosen not to do so and so there is a cost associated.

That cost is increased infection and an increased number of cases.

Giving them the six weeks was a major mistake. They now feel that they can do whatever they wish.

I presume there's no nphet press briefing this evening?

Regarding the recommendations to continue restrictions I have to say I'd be tempted to continue relatively high restrictions myself because I want to open up and stay open.

I don't want to open up and close down again.

That said Im not sure it's a good idea to stay closed as many will ignore restrictions.

To echo what others have said here, NPHET are indeed complete scum. Advocating for what is effectively an extension of Level 5 with minor tweaks. Keeping tens of thousands in the hospitality sector out of work, I don't see a single member of NPHET contemplating PUP. They have the luxury of knowing they're untouchable, while inflicting more drudgery on us in December. Scum. Micheál Martin, this is your moment to represent the interests of the people by standing up to the demagogues.

So you would have preferred the hospitals to be overwhelmed? That's what exponential growth will do at the high numbers we saw in September / October.

Easy to paint them as kill joys after the worst has past.

I remember a similar sentiment during the summer and then shock at the increase in numbers.

I expect in January / February as we are entering another lockdown we'll hear the same arguments about unelected experts.

    Trumpism is exportable it seems.
