Has anyone a link for how these vaccine trials work? Thought I saw an explanatory youtube link posted earlier but now can't find it.

It's great news if true, but I'd rather have a better understanding of it before getting my hopes up too much.

Plus if people expect a vaccine is on the way, they might adhere to restrictions more, so that's also a plus.

They've already said the vaccines should be able to deal with various mutations of the virus.

    Guardian has a good summary.

And there's a dedicated thread on this forum for vaccine in and outs.

Lowest 7 day positivity rate since October 6th

It was 7.9% on 17th October, so it’s gone below half that in just under 4 weeks.

Yes, we could easily move to a Level 2 scenario in Q2 2021 with the economy open and unrestricted travel.

Massive program to vaccinate the over 70s in Q1 and then off we go. Triple advantage - vaccine, improved treatments and spring/summer weather.

    Will this be possible here?

I really don’t think there will be enough doses available for all >70s in Q1. Every country in the world will be looking for vaccines.

EU has secured enough for 100m people in first allocation.

    In general?

They first trial it and tweak it on small groups of people to test that it provides some immunity in principle.

Then they test a larger group to check and see if the vaccine has any immediately apparent side-effects apart from the ones already known about.

Then they take thousands of people and split them into two groups.

One group gets the actual vaccine. The other group get a harmless saline injection as a placebo.

In this instance, there's a second injection. Both groups get that injection, on schedule.

Usually the people administering the injections don't know whether they're giving a placebo or the actual vaccine. This is known as "double blind" and prevents the patient from being influenced. As far as everyone is concerned, everyone is getting the real deal.

Patients are sent out into the world and are tested for covid at regular intervals.

Once enough patients have tested positive and recovered (or died), they gather all the data together to examine the vaccine group -v- the placebo group and how well it worked out.

Anyone knows if the per-county swab data is published anywhere? I can't find it on the GeoHive dashboard and I don't think I've ever seen it around the web.

    Don't think so

If there was overlap yesterday (542 cases??) then we could be seeing 100s-200s today.

Excellent- if the numbers continue to drop I can use the new EU traffic light system to bring the kids to Lapland:D

EU population of over-65s is about 90m.

The Lancet appears to estimate that the full at-risk population is about 31% in Europe. That's around 140m in the EU-27.

There may have to be some difficult choices in terms of prioritising those over 70/75 and/or with specified underlying conditions.

You'd expect them to come down in favour of healthcare workers first if there are limited initial doses. Other groups could be protected or cocooned in that scenario and we know how to do that.

We also have to factor in all the people who won't take the vaccine.

I think all over 70s should be offered it initially and if they don't take it then its on them and we open up.

We can't let refuseniks hold us back.

Will health care workers be prioritised over elderly? I imagine they would be.

My anecdotal survey of healthcare workers suggests to me that the take up rate among that cohort may not be higher than the take up rate for the flu vaccine. Also, if the most vulnerable are vaccinated first then the level of exposure for healthcare workers should drop. The UK might have it right.

Wow that's pretty serious 9 deaths within the last 24 hours, would this be a result of triage, considering the state of NI healthcare at the moment.

This is the current UK list of prioritisation... I imagine ours will be something similar.
A provisional ranking of prioritisation for persons at-risk is set out below:

    1. older adults’ resident in a care home and care home workers
    2. all those 80 years of age and over and health and social care workers
    3. all those 75 years of age and over
    4. all those 70 years of age and over
    5. all those 65 years of age and over
    6. high-risk adults under 65 years of age
    7. moderate-risk adults under 65 years of age
    8. all those 60 years of age and over
    9. all those 55 years of age and over
    10. all those 50 years of age and over
    11. rest of the population (priority to be determined)

The prioritisation could change substantially if the first available vaccines were not considered suitable for, or effective in, older adults.

Less than 1% of the population infected.

Amazing to think after all these months how few of the population have been exposed and how many are still vulnerable!

Think the UK has the highest risk group and healthcare workers together. I agree on flu' uptake but COVID is very different and they might be more likely to go for it.

But that's not an antibody/historical study, it's people currently infected
