    Ok, just saw it.
She is far from a “traditional” catholic going by her own account.

She has serious issues with basic beliefs of the RCC -

I don't recall her or anyone here making any reference to her being a traditional Catholic. And having issues with the church seems to be one her main points...?
don’t be fooled, this is simply some hack latching on to a gimmicky idea to drum up Christmas book sales

Don't worry, I haven't been suddenly "fooled" into rushing out to buy her book and follow her devotedly on social media...just willing to listen to her views on something that is often much easier to sheepishly slag off with the rest of her journalistic peers.

Good for you, Cole, I won’t be parting with my hard earned money for her gimmicky book but if you do I hope you enjoy it.

That's a bit harsh Beech, I think we probably have to accept her bona fide until otherwise proven. The fact that she met with Mary McAleese before going back to the Church did seem like a very unusual step though.

I really don't see how it would be a good career move though. She is used to being on the right/woke side of all the arguments - gay marriage, abortion, feminism. And I can't think that she would have got any of her previous positions if she was a conservative writer, whose writings were in line with the teachings of the Catholic Church. She will be used to having the support of the Twitter echo chamber and the main stream media channels here and being treated as a friendly. Now everything that she writes will be taken in the context of her being a Catholic. She might find a lot of those people who would have backed her when she had the "right" opinions now started to desert her. How long before the first Twitter spat with Colm O'Gorman or Panti!!!

Like I said it should be an interesting case study.

What I was alluding to was that in the failing print industry she would write about anything that would create a few column inches.

First thing O Connor mentions — The Indo —Bingo. The above caller was right. Must be in his contract.
Having said that I would far prefer him to Miriam, Tubs, Duffy, Darcy , Byrne et al. These should be replaced by the mc Ins,Hannons etc. On much lesser salaries obviously. Oh! Also a moratorium on anyone from the Kelly stable. Just to keep costs down for a while.

Well I suppose then that you could counter argue then that Gary Murphy and the history teacher get paid by the state either way, so they don't have any skin in the game. So lockdown doesn't really affect them. Probably happy enough to stay by the beach, get paid, and do all the lectures on Zoom - sounds pretty cool to me. If these academics were not paid when the colleges were closed, and not able to make their mortgages, I'm thinking they would have a very different view of lockdowns.

Maybe the likes of Gary Murphy is pretty secure in his position, but there are many in the university sector who are in precarious situations...it's hard to overstate the current/future loss of income from international students.

Gary Murphy seemed to miss the point that his role is to teach - for the moment that's via Zoom - it his not his role to give the college life experience (as Sarah Ann Buckley pointed out to him).

As am aside Colleges have been moving to online / webinars gradually over the year's

At work, I have Teams calls with numerous people, including guys who are in Brisbane, Melbourne etc. And they are flawless, including video and file sharing. Some colleagues are down the country here and they can struggle if there’s a need go onto video.

But you’d think RTE could actually sort out their systems. It’s like two cans and a piece of string sometimes

There is something very mealy mouthed about saying "We are hiding the records so that they don't have to be destroyed". Truly shocking that he got away with this.

McAleese is the only one putting her head above the parapet re women's equality within the church. Nobody else will go near the subject. Fair play to her.
Basically the teaching and law of the RC church sees women as nothing more than vessels of evil.....and subjugates... yet nobody gives a fiddler's.

Ah do we not get enough of Catriona Perry during the week...and we've heard enough of her reflections on being the US correspondent before

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,628 ✭✭✭Cole

Takes to the end of the second series, she says, before you get it. Not exactly the most stirring recommendation for a show I've ever heard.

I’d say you are in the minority there with your opinion, I found her insights were on the money, and her explanation of why middle america voted for Trump in 2016 was spot on. I’d also say she has a great voice for radio.

Each to their own...we all have our different opinions. Hard to say if I'm in the minority though.

It's specifically the vowel sound in much of her pronunciation... a la Miriam, AA Roadwatch etc...for me.

In fairness, I think we all know that by now...given the endless analysis over the last 4 years by numerous commentators.

There's usually 2 or 3 male experts on politics or the latest news on covid 19. Its nice to hear a female reporter who has on original viewpoint on American politics

I learned a bit from her contribution, so I've no issue with her being on the show. Might be an interesting idea to have her and Brian Donovan do a live show on the election.
