Ian Dempsey has gone an awful long way on no discernible talent or personality. Then again so has Brendan.

I suppose the appeal of Ian Dempsey is that he has a sunny disposition and doesn't impose himself or his life on his audience.That's way people like him- he's inoffensive. Unlike say Ray Darcy for example.

This conversation is dreadful, the pair of them guffawing and talking over each other.

Someone on the panel mentioned Anton Savage and his role as a presenter and his role in The Communications Clinic. During the same segment a statement was read from The Communications Clinic saying that Savage had no role in media training in the past ten years. No mention if he had media trainined anyone while also on air in the years prior to that.

Suprised to hear Ian say he wasn't really into music at the start of the segment. I missed the rest of it. So I do not know if it was supposed to be a joke or not.

He's still a director of the company though so to me there are still questions around his impartiality in interviewing clients of a company he profits from. That ranges from high profile individuals who are media trained by them, to organisations who use them for PR abd who may be in the news for one controversy or another.

In a way though that segment shows why Brendan is so jumpy about names and claims. The Communications Clinic were in as quick as a flash to get that correction read out. Even if it does get laughable in practice with BOC constantly telling people to be careful etc on air.

I rarely listen to the show tbh. Just had it on in the background today. Sarah Carey is absolutely painful. She clearly loves - adores - the sound of her own voice.

I would agree with you. He is still a director of the company. So their is a conflict of intrests. I remeber Matt Cooper being very vocal about George Hook doing adverts for Sky TV. How it was a conflict of intrests, etc.

I think Savage was confined to the motoring slot on The Last Word at the time.

The media world in Ireland is quite insular and self-serving. It’s a farcical situation when he’s covering topics where his company has an involvement with the individual or organisation in question.

why were you surprised? and no it was not meant as a joke.

You'll find national radio DJs (even in the old school sense when radio was less of a business) have little interest in or knowledge of music. Exceptions being Dave fanning for example.

I like Ian and have listened to him more so in his 2FM days and the Beat Box on TV etc, but I find he doesn't like being interviewed and he tends to put up a wall of defence in a harmless way and turns the attention and praise back to the interviewer.

He mentioned during the interview that he didn't even collect his Leaving Cert results. He just wanted to work in Radio. It sounds like radio is his passion. Were the pirates not music lead. If he just saw it as a business. I could understand him starting a station. Not just joining on as a DJ.

It's always interesting to read opinions on boards that seem totally at odds with what I hear irl. Personally I've always enjoyed listening to Ian Dempsey and I often hear him spoken about with great affection by others too.

I missed the comment about not being interested in music. I heard him talk about finding it nearly impossible to narrow down his song selections to only five, and then about his love of David Bowie.

just because Ian came from the original pirates, worked as a DJ (radio and clubs) and still has a very long successful radio career that does not mean that he has a huge interest or knowledge of music.

Many of the pirates were radio anoraks fascinated with the medium of radio though may not have much interest in the records they were playing, or music in general in their own time.

It is a job at the end of the day.

Any of the former pirate presenters I’ve spoken to over the years got into it through a love of music as well as the buzz of being on air. Of course after a long radio career they may not be as passionate about today’s music but that’s not surprising.

Just listened to last Sunday's show there. Nice to hear some new voices on the panel as it was getting boring af. That said, though Oisin Coughlan is a regular it was interesting to hear his view on the so-called "nuclear option" planning law change.

The highlight of the show had to be the interview with Geoffrey Hinton, about AI. If anyone wants to understand wtf AI is about, then tune into this, as he is the godfather of AI apparently and it's not hard to see why. I've always believed in a rule that says if someone is explaining something technical to you and you're not getting it, there's a pretty good chance that the explainer hasn't a clue either. What he has to say about it is understandable but terrifying and believable.

I also caught the Geoffrey Hinton interview on AI and thought it was excellent. His explanations and predictions were fascinating and terrifying. I thought Brendan did well with his questioning too. Glad I heard it.

The wonderful Fawlty Towers is fifty years old and obviously some parts of it are dated.

Broadcasters face a dilemma in dealing with this.

I much prefer the Notification/ Disclaimer approach rather than editing or worse still not using excerpts at all.

I would have said "The Germans" episode is not dated though. He was sending up Basil's Little Englander xenophobia and the fact that it took a knock on the head for him to say it out loud. If any episode is dated, or at least might deserve O'Connor's caveat/disclaimer it's probably the one with O'Reilly the cowboy Irish builder 😀 Might be a bit close to the bone today …
