They had their chance and blew it spectacularly.

    ...pay the players
    Therein lies the biggest hurdle.

This is in contravention of their ethos.

Just run the championship over a few weekends in 4/5 venues and pay the players to isolate in camps.

It's an amateur game. Dontcha know.

Hence the newly imposed restrictions on household visits! It would seem as though most have forgotten that this has literally just been introduced and we need to give it 2/3 weeks to see progress. After all, we were told that households are the key driver for transmission now. Level heads required to strike the right balance for the country.

With the present rates of increase we don't have another 3 weeks to hang around , especially with a bank holiday weekend in there to tempt people out .

We'll manage. Don't throw in that worn out 'old people in rural areas' line. We have more to our lives in the countryside and villages than GAA. We'd survive one season without matches and can appreciate the need to prioritise more important aspects of life.

They were open for 2 months before the cases started to increase. Opening them was not a mistake. They need to stay closed now because of the figures but explain why numbers stayed low when they were open for months.

Summer was a factor, looks like Covid is seasonal and peaks in winter.

People got complacent when numbers dropped and went back to normal pub ways after a couple of months.

Know of two people who caught it in pubs and they weren't telling contact tracers that. One was telling me the week before he got it how great his pub was with a total free for all with lock ins.

Basically doctor in leinster says there are clusters all around leinster because of the GAA. There is a 18 person cluster from gaa county final this week. And the doctor says there is large many clusters in one leinster county due to gaa matchs. The doctor says after the matchs players celebrated from drinking from the cup passing around the cup and taking shots from the cup. Another outbreak was related to with lockin with gaa players celebrating county final win.
Now Imagine if Mayo won Sam or Cavan won Ulster or Wexford or Waterford won the hurling the celebration we saw after the county finals would be tame in comparsion.

Like tomorrow there is minor games and under 20 games across the country. The minor players who are 15 and 16 will travel to other counties in many cases and play the match and then return to secondary school on Monday. The Under 20 players wgo are 18 19 will travel to another county in many cases and play match and then return to third level college in many cases. Kerry senior players are going travel to Monaghan in cars on Sunday and 32 counties with panels of 30 will be criss crossing the country as we are on the verge of a national lockdown, and in the middle of the second wave of pandemic and according to chief medical officer while the country is on the verge of catastrophe and yet GAA thinks it the right to hold national competion at the height of national health crisis not seen in an hundred years to see who wins Sam Maguire or liam Mcarthy. GAA need to do the right things and holding a national championhip as covid cases are expoding and in many cases because f the GAA is definately not the right thing.

The clubs blew it. Intercounty can be more contained I feel, particularly hurling. It's worth trying at least.

It would be a huge distraction mentally for a large percentage of the population to have live inter county games.

IF and it's a big IF the competitions can be run safely. It would nearly involve removing county panels from their families and communities..professionalism in the GAA!

A Waterford v Wexford all ireland final in bleak December would be a tonic. Mayo making their break through.

What’s the difference between level 4 restrictions and level 5?

Can we stop blaming the people. You never get 100% adherence to anything and that should of been expected by the authorities.

The reason we are in this mess is because they didn’t get track and trace right. They had from March until June to get it rolled out and right. If they had been successful we would of tracked down every last case/ contact in June, July, August we would not be where we are today. Small local clusters would be expected not it being absolutely everywhere.

Posts like this are giving government, HSE etc a free pass on their failures. If there is another lockdown we should all be demanding that they get their own house in order if they want the public to buy into restrictions.

Too much sense in that post.

Tempt people out....to where?? the local pub, or perhaps a nice meal in their favourite restaurant? Many hotels have closed as we are to stay in our counties so can’t go there either.

The county finals were a disaster and should never have happened . The intercounty should not be as bad but the fact that the players are amateurs and going back to work Monday is why they should not be classified as elite.

Hopefully. The Premier League personally helped me alot and I am very young. Level 5 lockdown is very challenging. This one will be very hard

You can manage the teams to a degree but it's the muppet fans/supporters that will insist on imbecilic celebrations that are the problem. They showed their mettle after the club championships.

Indeed the 6 nations and the new rugby tournament matches starting next week and into November will be called off - despite that there are no spectators.

I know a lot of people who have found recent sports games therapy for the soul. But sure what does that matter.

    I agree.
A lot of elderly people have seen, if not the same intensity , some pretty miserable and lean years , thinking single channel TV, recessions electricity blackouts all over winter and massive fuel prices . The 70s and 80s were bleak ( although the music was great !)
I think a lot would manage a season without GAA and pubs .
But the rules about visiting elderly and isolated people need to be revised and tweaked .

No country in Europe has a weaker health service

I can add to this point in an informed way which will hopefully help the level of understanding and discussion.

A better appreciation of the covid situation can be grasped if the state of the health service itself is recognised as being unrelated to the issue.
The health service has its weaknesses, but it is an unhelpful and distracting narrative to portray this as significant in the performance of the country in its actions against covid. Those espousing it, are either ill infomed, or wilfully misrepresenting the position in order to further an ulterior motive. While of course, the extreme cases end up in the care of the HSE, and I mean in no way to dismiss the importance of caring for them to our utmost, in the context of control of the pandemic, they are statistically irrelevant. The struggle against such a virus is won or lost by the actions and controls undertaken by society as a whole, and the timing, balance, and mix of measures implemented at the politicial level. I am happy to clarify by personal message to any readers unclear or enquiring further on this matter.

(forum moderators: perhaps this posting could be made a sticky or key post or such to help others with this same misunderstanding, as it seems to arise repeatedly from what I read here and the in the related fora.)

That's only half the battle. So you track and trace perfectly.
What about the clowns like the GAA player waiting on a test result who didn't isolate, who travelled on the team coach?
Or the publican in Roscommon who also ignored self isolation and turned out to be positive and infected X people...

Perfect track and trace ain't going to get the buy in of clowns like that.
We need proper punishments for people who ignore those basic obligations.
Ditto for people coming here from abroad - you need a negative test or actually enforced isolation with consequences for breaching them.

Think that tweet "they must love the GAA in Europe" might need to be posted again.

Think they should right off the inter county and that was my opinion when they first announced postponing it until October all the way back in May. But a lot of good has come out of the games in the summer, and the work of volunteers in communities when activity was suspended.

And if you don't recognize that well that's your problem.
