There's actually very few people on Boards saying let it rip. Saying that we need to live with the virus is not the same as saying let it rip.

Well most of us are currently living with the virus. That just isnt good enough for some who want things back to normal asap and pretend the virus isn't real. But as you said theres very few of those left now.

I look at the social psychology of it as a bit like people are grieving loss of normality.

The stages of grief, in the simplified Kübler-Ross model are:

    1. Denial
    2. Anger
    3. Depression
    4. Acceptance

I think the issue is more that the majority of the population is at 3. and 4.

The conspiracy theorists are firmly stuck at 1. and 2.

It’s much easier to believe that it’s all fake, overblown or some grand and very human plot than it is to accept a mindless virus is undermining a huge range of important aspects of all that we take for granted in normal life and a lot of things that make us happy.

It’s even harder to accept that it’s currently something that’s beyond the control of modern sciences. Our sense of technological invincibility has been severely dented and I think perhaps the popularity of conspiracy theories is down to a very wounded human ego. We don’t like to feel weak, but we are, at least until we can find solutions to it.

I think perhaps the reason the US has gone the deepest down that rabbit hole is that it’s also the most cocky and sure of itself nation on the planet. It’s been a huge shock to the American psyche to feel that an invisible virus, that doesn’t care what your nationality is or how big your nuclear weapons are, is simply is doing them the same damage as it is everyone else. The sense of exceptionalism is gone and that really hurts, if your entire belief system was that you were invincible. You can’t buy or shoot your way out of it.

So it’s much easier to just pretend it’s not happening and hide in a conspiracy theory or imagine it’s a bio weapon etc etc etc.

covid-19; the great leveller. So utterly true. Thank you

Reverting to locking down the country is not living with the virus though.

Almost everyone I meet in the world is concerned for older people and those with underlying conditions and they do not want to endanger others. Young men whose wives have asthma. Women in their 30s looking after their Ma. Site managers who do not want to see covid get in among the crews. These are the more normal attitudes. Don't mind the let it rip blather on here. Most people in real life value others.

Amen to this. Go to many other threads here, and while it gets a mention, we are going on with our albeit restricted lives, The Christmas thread is a tonic! And all the local volunteer folks who are supporting cocooners like myself .

    So much kindness and caring.

I only come to this area once a day if that and the tone and content are changing . It takes time to assimilate hard things. Which is perfectly natural and healthy. Then slowly the reality and the acceptance come in. The old survival adage about adapting to survive .

By one or two people theres nobody else here I've seen saying let it rip. Big difference between that and living with it while taking precautions which most are doing.

Letting it rip isn't an option at all, heard immunity is highly questionable

Wearing masks, washing hands and social distancing isn't destroying the fabric of society despite what some try to claim as they spread hysteria.

Essentially if done now takes us through to first week in December.

I'd imagine they know compliance with any guidance on household mixing will hit the floor over Christmas so get it low and deal with it again in January

6 week lockdown at level 5 may not be enough. Probably need 3+ months at level 5

They could only be corralled for so long and now they have bolted. And please, don't shoot the messenger. I'm only pointing out what the authorities don't seem to want to acknowledge.

This is madness. We need to learn to live with Covid-19. The impact on the economy, livelihoods and mental health will be enormous. We have just introduced a significant new measure of prohibiting household visits country wide. We need to wait 3-4 weeks to see the effect of this and in the meantime, those that are vulnerable need to protect themselves from getting the virus as much as possible and those that are not need to keep the economy alive whilst also diligently protecting themselves from the virus and also from potentially spreading it.

We were told house visits were the primary cause of spread so let’s give it a chance to work whilst taking personal responsibility for our own actions and decisions over the coming weeks.

if that's true its most unfortunate, but the experts on here said there wouldn't be a lockdown....so there no point in believing anything in the media.

The world is coming to an end.

Humanity is taking its last breaths as we speak.

We are better off. It’s for the best that humankind is wiped out by this virus.

Europe faces the most serious crisis since WW2 this winter.

The situation is bleak across the board in every country and it's deteriorating fast.

The CDC in the United Sates has been warning since last March about this autumn, winter, spring. That this will require a serious resolve.

But it's got lost in the fog with the media.

We need to be prepared for measures that might not sit well with the notion of liberal democracy ultimately right across Europe. How that works out, we'll have to wait and see. People won't be happy with what has to be done.

It doesn’t impact my self worth. It’s shattered any illusions I had of solidarity though. Ireland’s clearly a lot more cut throat and heartless than I had imagined.

I disagree. People are really concerned about the vulnerable stroke victims, disabled, cancer patients, depressed etc that have been completely ignored through this. Every one deserves consideration including the covid vulnerable.

Unfortunately the Irish population has shown that it doesn't have the collective cop on to take responsibly for their own actions.

Im great at following advice and you probably are too we aren't getting the job done.

Edit:for the record I believe level 3 with enforcement would have had a chance to do a job but they didn't enforce. If they bring in enforcement today level 3 will be judged as a failure before the effects of enforcement come in.

Ah no, sure we have nowhere near the cases now that we did back in April so why would we need a lockdown of similar length?

I think if it was hard and fast with strict control, we'd get numbers down in a 6 week period.

This “learn to live with the virus” is such a glib throwaway remark. It can mean anything or nothing. What does it say about us if we essentially lock up half or 40% of people under the guise of protecting the vulnerable, so the rest can carry on ? Is that really the best we can come up with ? It really smells like “I had my fun and that’s all that matters”. I honestly don’t know the answer, but I can’t for the life of me see us being able to keep people shielded successfully. That’s before we consider the impact on the vulnerable to being “protected”.

Some pages back someone compared it to WW2. Whilst obviously it’s different in terms of the slaughter and deaths etc, it’s similar in the impact on society. This is a world changing event that we’re living through. Our old norms and expectations are gone (for the time being) and it’s very hard for a modern society to accept. There’s a cohort out there who simply can’t understand or process that, it’s literally like “file not found”.

    Early morning rant over :)

Maybe for Wave 3 we will have learned our lesson/be ready to live with Covid.
