Are you sure the flu vaccine is being rationed to those most at risk?
I thought the health authorities want a big uptake of the flu vaccine this year in case someone comes down with both flu and covid together.
Australia went down the road of a public health campaign encouraging flu vaccines during their winter.
Apparently they are currently not available "privately" and GPs and Pharmacy general supplies are "private"

I've had it for the past 3 years, but can't get one at present. May change, but I would understand them focussing on the elderly (well older than me anyway!) and those with other underlying issues. I don't think they have enough to give to everyone that wants one (heard 2m doses mentioned on the radio, but they are expecting a large upturn in demand this year)

EDIT: I think there's also a big push to get more healthcare workers vaccinated this year, given how even more critical they have become in the face of Covid-19

So from what I remember we never had ever critical care bed available in the Country occupied in the country back in April. I do remember the Mater reporting they were full alright but I think nationwide there was space to accommodate people.

Basically, looking at the HSE report and the small number of available critical care beds would suggest being overwhelmed is imminent but doesn't take into account the surge capacity. And I know if that continues to escalate it will greatly impinge on other healthcare services being provided, but just think it's not accurate to use that number as a point to say we are on the brink.

This would be my point. We can not let this happen people need to be tested for cancers and other diseases at a good rate

Its being rationed because we didn't order enough and are now short of flu vaccines

I'd assume other countries want more of the vaccine as well, I wonder if it is a supply issue rather than poor planning? If it's obvious to everyone here that the uptake will be higher this year, you'd think the people placing the orders can figure it out too.

This whole thing is just a mess

    Economy Vs people's health

Thing is, the business owners care not one fûck about the economy, simply their own balance sheets....and how the economy relates to that, their end.

If the government said to xx company in an industry currently restricted, they can open tomorrow.. I guarantee they couldn’t give a bôllocks about the economy, about their competitors not opening, they just want to make euros, if that means a few people got sick or worse... they couldn’t give a fûck....

It’s the Covid official website. Covid 19 data hub.

Yesterday they reported 1992 over 65s hospitalised. Today it’s 2204. Both figures are cumulative since March. So 2204 - 1992 = 212 in one day.

But TOTAL cases hospitalised today is 201.

So how can there be 212 extra oldies in hospital when the total extra is only 201?

I may be reading the numbers wrong, but I don’t think so.

I can't see yesterday's 1992. I can tell you that the figure of 2204 is upto Friday and doesn't include today or yesterday. There was a total of 18 admissions to hospital today with covid.

I am sure there were people in ICU before and during Covid other illnesses and the like did not just stop. What is your point. If they get overwhelmed they get overwhelmed. They will also want to make sure that those people do not get Covid as more then likely in there condition it would not be good to get it.

As for your other questions I do not know but again why would it matter

Yes there were, but a lot less so as only emergencies were dealt with .
None elective as all planned surgery and treatment was cancelled.
Also ICU and wards were split between Covid and non Covid care .
At present the health services are trying to keep all care going , as much as safely possible , hence the squeeze as numbers climb.

Got it last week in local boots, booked and filled out the online form early sept, when i arrived expected to be told no as i'm not in a risk group but they gave it to me without any hint of rationing.

Called doc last week and getting mine on Monday same with father. I have autoimmune issues and he is elderly, mum would have gotten one as well except for tablets she is taking.

That makes sense, if it is as airborne as we are led to believe, I still don't understand how if it as contagious from surfaces as some say how every single person working in a supermarket has not had it. With or without masks every item that is bought is touched by the customer and the teller, multiple times, I often see the tellers having to take the customers phones to help them with the rewards card apps. It doesn't make sense.

Masks shields and gloves and aprons are being used where I shop.

It’s airborne and lives on surfaces but existing virus on food packing is encouraging Safefood saying...

I can see January being pretty grim. People won’t follow any restrictions at Christmas and we will see the fallout from that in January.

On the contrary, I think people will be very cautious.

This place is not representative of the majority really.

They are now, back in April none of the above, yet it wasn't happening, phones have more germs than anything, even with gloves people get itchy noses etc at some stage during their work.

People are so defensive about the icu numbers, my point is if we reach capacity it doesn't automatically mean doctors have to pick who lives or dies, elective surgery's will be cancelled like in March where we dealt with this with 5 times as many cases. Im not saying we may not need further restrictions im not saying we don't need to react now, I'm disputing the fact we are close to our health system collapsing.

I don't disagree with that at all in fairness. Just a fine balance needs to be struck, I have been critical of the government plenty this year but I do think the right decision was made last Sunday.

It may ultimately be a case that level 4 or 5 of the plan are deemed necessary at some point if things escalate further but they had to try and keep as many "non essential" workers in Employment as possible in my view for as long as possible. Fine balance to strike as I say, this part I don't envy anyone

This is an interesting read but it shows how much parents and kids have been let down by the department of education.

Virus is clearly spreading in schools.
If schools close parents can’t work and kids can’t get an education.
Why has the department not looked into blended learning for primary students and alternating the days they go into the class.
One day a week in school and short tutorial videos by there teacher online for the other four days.
The classroom capacity is then reduced by 4/5 ths at anyone time.

We’ve had 6 months to get prepared for the second wave that as I stated before was always inevitable. (Cue the agent smith gifs)

It's really frightful actually, and is doing untold damage to public perceptions. I made a post about it earlier but the damage that these disconnected messages do is terrifying.

It's an antibody test they use in a few different countries, it's good for a few weeks, she didn't invent it, it's more of a distribution contact she's after getting. It comes with a digital app that gives you a licence to do god knows what for 3 weeks, maybe you don't need to wear a mask or can travel across the county border.
I'm not convinced it's the game changer we need, might be good for a two week holiday in the sun.

Completely agree with you, a blended approach should have been there right from the reopening, department are useless

We've 850,000 waiting to get into hospital at the moment, this time last year we had 11,500 people on trolleys, were no where near normal when it comes to hospital numbers.
Your correct it's not going to fall over. It's in one hell of a mess and it's didn't start with Covid though.

What’s really pissing me off is the issue isn’t being addressed in the media?
There needs to be massive pressure put on the department to introduce blended learning by the media plus teaching unions plus parent associations.

Ya it seems to me the health system has been overwhelmed for the last 30 years so we are used to it.

They'd need to give us decent broadband and access to tablets first.
