Anyone have the Donegal numbers anywhere? It's been two weeks of alleged restrictions - any sign of improvement? This 400+ spread across 20 counties lark is not very enlightening..

If hospital beds and especially ICU beds are the squeeze point in Ireland. How does the lenght of our patients stays in comparison to other countries. I stand to be corrected did someone post 14 days earlier on? Are Irish patients staying longer why? And do we have acess to drugs/treatments that potential shorten the stays.

'ICU LoS was reported by eight studies—four each within and outside China—with median values ranging from 6 to 12 and 4 to 19 days, respectively. Our summary distributions have a median hospital LoS of 14 (IQR 10–19) days for China, compared with 5 (IQR 3–9) days outside of China. For ICU, the summary distributions are more similar (median (IQR) of 8 (5–13) days for China and 7 (4–11) days outside of China).'

Note..limitations of study.... seems like this sort of research paper data, on lenght of stays only started to be published recently.

One of the spikes was a large party held to celebrate the local team winning a match, and unknown to anyone, the bar staff were positive but asymptomatic. Wasn't helped when everyone took a chug at the drink from the cup they'd won, and it was made worse when they all went to a different local pub either later that evening or the following day (didn't get the exact details of that bit of the story). That one event caused a "significant cluster".

Another issue is Kepak meat factory in Clonee, there are suspicions that it might be generating clusters.

A third possible is a significant influx of visitors from Dublin came out to the pubs in Ashbourne when Dublin was put into Level 3, all the pubs in the town here were "crowded", and things like substantial meals and the like were being "massaged".

Kepak was one of the first places that came to light before we knew anything about meat factories, Its near Ratoath was listed earlier as having nigh numbers as was Kells which surfaced in some reports about school cases

    Deaths remarkably tiny by comparison
Except the deaths are from the ~9755 identified about three weeks ago, so 54 of that is about 0.6% - still not huge, but that rate will give ~150 deaths three weeks from today.
Seems a good rate to aim for, tbh - that would give us only 6 deaths here from today's cases in three weeks - we'll be lucky to have it that low, I think.

Do they ever publish stats by profession? e.g. whether people in hospitality industry have higher case numbers than other sectors? If you're working all day in a hotel and they are supposed to be transfer zones, lots of staff would be catching it no?

No but locally it would be known in some cases. Village near me, the local petrol station and one pub is closed after the owner of the petrol station went to work and the pub for an after match celebration while waiting on their test result that came back positive. Seven staff in the petrol station now positive for covid and pub staff awaiting testing.

And you can say this with certainty because?

Because countries that took lesser and less stringent and responsible measures as a reaction are in worse positions and because most notably respected experts in the field of virology and medicine agree.

    Zero Covid loon group?

    Edit.
    'Meet the team'
Killeen and Staines to name but two. The loon label confirmed. Surprised McConkey is not in the mix.

Unfortunately, with NI pretty much out of control I don't think the restrictions are going to have the same effect as Dublin. :/

There needs to be a seal on the border imo. Things are out of control in Derry and strabane council area.

There is a small section of society, no matter what the situation, who will always be stupid, careless and ignorant.

We will have to end up legislating for tougher measures against them if the situation continues to deteriorate at the pace it is.

At the end of the day these individuals put people's livelihoods and health at risk.

More shenanigans in Dublin city center today.

The analogy I would use is speed bumps. The vast majority of people are quite capable of driving along a road at a responsible speed, but because a few times a week some prat decides to use it as a racetrack then we all get bounced up and down over speed bumps.

I don't claim to know the answer but it's just not true that it's not containable really, Japan, Vietnam, South Korea, Hong Kong, Singapore..all contained it effectively while maintaining a relative normalcy in daily life

Fair play, didn’t think of those countries. It’s interesting that they are all Asian and, if I’m not wrong, are all strongly influenced by Confucian values.

The west’s fascination with the rights of the individual doesn’t work well in this sort of pandemic because it’s almost impossible to control the behaviour of an entire population in a democracy that values individual liberty over the good of the collective. That’s what’s needed to control this disease without a vaccine.

From the HSE daily operational reports:

9th October: 274 available general beds, 39 available ICU beds
9th September: 272 available general beds, 39 available ICU beds

Interesting that spare beds have barely moved in a month, despite the increase in COVID cases.

Interesting that would mean that people going to hospital with covid would have gone anyway even if they didn't have it..
