Insane numbers in Northern Ireland and I don't get it. Belfast has always felt like a ghost town to me compared to Dublin. No real density, very spread out. Are they all having house parties too?

My friend from Belfast said it's mostly people in Derry and Strabane. No idea if that's true or not but she blamed them at least.

Some decent posts here from people that take the time to give genuine information and informed opinion. Unfortunately those willing to post sarcasm and smart arse comments outnumber them considerably . You have to wade through alot of crap to read decent info.

Good to know. Thanks for filling us in

Selective amnesia? A few months ago it was killing 40-50 per day in mid April, if you've forgotten. That's why the economy may close, not close because of how many it's currently killing daily

Because Simple Simon and Dr Death Holohan a) forced nursing homes to reopen to visitors and b) pushed anyone they could out of hospital back into nursing homes without any testing to see if they had Covid.

What setting was there the most amounts of deaths?? It wasn’t out in the open.

    I'm confused.

Covid has a natural R rate of about 2.5, if no precautions are taken. And of course, that means schools are open, as are pubs, nightclubs, concerts, festivals, sports matches etc etc.

Two thirds of the working population are WFH. Public transport is fairly deserted. People are wearing masks indoors most of the time, and at least attempting social distancing if they are not wearing a mask. Gyms are closed. Hardly anyone is flying on airplanes.

So how are we in a situation where someone who gets infected with covid goes on to infect between 1 and 2 more people? I know some people will say "it's the schools, it has to be!", and I admit there is a certain logic to that. But if it was the schools that were fueling this, would we see a massive increase in percentage of infections being in the 0-14 category? It's not like they're not being tested - primary school children have been to testing centres in their droves since school reopened and the usual slew of back-to-school lurgy began.

I had really thought that 80/90% of people wearing masks and practicing social distancing indoors, along with having 2/3 of the working population stay at home and off public transport would have a much bigger impact on the R number than it has.

i mean, if it's not the schools, how the f*ck is thing still transmitting so efficiently?? And if it is the schools, why is the 0-14 age category still only making up 10% of positive cases, which is the same percentage of positive cases during the summer?

i have to admit. I'm flummoxed.

I think it’s all the little things we barely notice now, the house visits that don’t cost us a second thought, the people with masks around their chins that lean over you in the shops, the GAA final celebrations, a few house parties, the schools etc etc. A bit like marginal gains in sport, it’s all those little percentages adding up to a much easier overall environment for covid to spread.

Couldn't agree more. This chart explains the increase in hospitalisations. Starts in the young moves to the old then hospitals start coming under pressure.
Liverpool have said their two largest hospitals will be at same level as height of first wave.

Insane numbers because the tests detect the most tiny minuscule amounts of covid, even dead covid in asymptomatic. otherwise perfectly healthy people. When is the penny going to drop that this is a grossly exaggerated reaction to a virus that is fairly harmless to the vast majority of people.

It's an infectious illness and it's exploding all over Europe.

The world's not having one giant house party, the cessation of which would halt this in its tracks.

Some have suggested the women of the night are bussed in straight from Dublin airport to satisfy local desires.

Road checkpoints between cities in Ireland and yet nothing much on the border. Like landmines and barbedwire
