One of the main reasons why fear seems to be so widespread in Ireland in comparison to more populated countries is our size.Almost everybody will know of someone who has or had it.Will also have heard of Johnny or Mary's first cousin who has recovered but left with long term serious side effects.

Know 3 people locally who have had it and 2 who possibly had it, the latter 2 were in hospital in December with a very bad flu, both fit and strong, one still has occasional trouble breathing.

I think the biggest fear here is our crappy health system will collapse . The HSE was woeful before Covid and even though they had 6 months to be prepared its still crappy
Its not fit for purpose and it’s definitely one of the biggest causes of fear and stress among my friends

Official advice -- There are crocs in the water, don't jump in

Precious flakes -- How dare you deprive me of my lovely regular swim

Official advice: There's crocs in the water, but over 100km away, we can put up barriers and track their movements accurately in order to protect you while you enjoy a swim.

Precious curious_case: Oh no please close down the entire Ocean and I will stay under my bed until it's gone.

If we protect the elderly, can you prove the above is going to happen?

And at any point are you willing to consider the cost of all this? And I don’t mean to economy.

And will you be happy to do it next winter also? Cos this vaccine is no silver bullet as even the medic say.

Is that a gamble a responsible government should take ?

i'm curious what the "no restrictions" people's plan would be here with our health service facing complete collapse in a matter of months, if not weeks. are you genuinely okay with that as long as you can go about your old life?

Well instead of kicking down on the people trying to pay their bills, I'll probably be annoyed at our governments failure to plan for a covid winter.....

Well perhaps we should be wondering why absolutely nothing has been done to increase hospital/ICU capacity since this started?

A vaccine could be far away. Our economy could collapse in a matter of months if we keep locking down and yo yoing between restrictions. If the economy collapses, the health system suffers.

All current evidence shows is that lockdown doesn’t work anyways. Kildare has been locked twice now and had nearly 50 cases yesterday.

We need to start at least considering other approaches.

And what good will that do if ICUs are full in the future ?
I totally agree btw that the health service has been chronically underfunded etc for decades, but that’s no good to someone in 6 weeks time who needs a bed and can’t get it because they’re full of COVID patients, or conversely someone with covid who can’t get a bed and who might die otherwise.

Israeli healthcare looks like it will actually collpase similar to Italy and Spain back in March, now 900 in ICU having surpassed national capacity of 800

How long do you think people with very little risk should put their social, family, love lives and careers on hold for?

    1 year, 2? 10?

I heard a doctor on Brendan O'Connor's programme this morning slating face screens, saying they were worse than useless and should be banned. After hearing this, I decided not to use mine anymore and to stick to my regular face mask. This afternoon we had a lovely Sunday lunch in a well renowned restaurant in Limerick city. The staff were all wearing what I can only describe as micro face screens. They sit on the chin, as opposed to the forehead, cover the mouth but don't fully cover the nose. When the waiter leaned in to me to place cutlery, his uncovered nose was inches from mine. I thought I was being paranoid but the three 20 somethings in our family all agreed that these masks are "a joke". Has anybody else seen these?

I've only seen them on twitter but they look like a joke alright. Think people will have to vote with their wallet. If staff aren't wearing masks don't give them the business. They'd learn the lesson fairly quickly. It seems harsh but its for their own benefit too. If cases are traced back to them, staff could be out, restaurant could close etc

There'll never be a consensus on how to deal with this virus. Posts on this very thread just show that with an abundance of shouty clowns at extreme ends of both arguments armed with nonsense probably pulled from their own holes. It doesn't give me any hope at all.

I would hate to be in Government or Nphet right now. Whatever they do, they will face harsh criticism from all quarters.

Will we get the usual announcement at somewhere between 5:30-6:00 or will it be delayed to coincide with nephet meeting.

Perhaps nephet meeting might be about specific policy rather than new lockdown.

It’s all comes down to the selfishness and selflessness of individuals.
Where is the line between public health and thinking as a society, and “I’m alright jack” individuals ? For some people their finances are paramount and for others they’re prepared to put up with some pain so they can benefit family members and maybe get this thing passed quicker.

We have heard this for about 20 countries in the last few weeks, it never actually happens though.

Case numbers could be quite high again today if NPHET are meeting this evening

Why wouldn't the numbers be announced as usual?

There's no press conference or anything like that.

They just get the usual press release

Israel is in a shocking place at the moment. In the midst of it all the Government is facing down violent protests from anti-restriction movements and from people who feel the Government aren't going far enough.

We have not..ISrael has already surpassed it's ICU capacity. It's not a case of if or may happen, they're in the worst case scenario

Usually through extraordinary efforts and sacrifice by front line staff.

Unlike internet posters though, governments can’t take the gamble that it might.
The same idiots would be complaining then anyway if it did.

I would guess that just as the North had a huge jump to 934 the same is happening now in South.

ICU capacity has been increased. You can criticise that the increase should be more, but to say absolutuely nothing has been done is simply untrue

    Pre-Covid capacity: 225
    Temporary surge capacity: 354
    Current permanent capacity: 280
Capacity after Winter Plan funding: 297

We all locked down for a few months and it didn't make thing pass quicker as you say. What are you basing your putting up with some pain to make this thing pass quicker on.
