And where does this money for the welfare system come from? Does it magically fall out of the sky?

    Short answer yes.

It is created from thin air and is added to our account. Gov then adds it to yours.

One day a man named Mario said "whatever it takes".

Since then money fell from the internet.

People really don't get it. It's not accountancy. It's magic.

Sure how can they when they don't have a pay cheque, they are on the dole!!!

Well I see you're just talking nonsense now. The whole country isn't unemployed. There are still many people with jobs 85% in fact. And this pandemic won't last forever.

Judging by some of the adulation online you would think it was the second coming of the Messiah. People have short memories tbh.

Jesus christ morons. He didn't introduce the virus into the country, he dealt with it from a medical point of view, as is his portfolio

Clowns think he's coming back to pour it into your letter box or something.

Not as much as the nations health no.

The nation's health is more or less the same as it was this time last year. I think you're referring to the health of a relatively small number of individuals.

    Also the cervical check scandal.

And we have another screening crisis around the corner but nobody seems to think that's a big deal. He was in charge when it was all stopped.

You seem to have no idea of what the CMO does. His advice on nursing home visitors has been shown to have nothing to do with the spread there. He would have no role in halting other screening programmes - they are run by the HSE. The cervical check "scandal" was about not letting women (who had cancer and were being treated) know that an audit of their cases showed the cancer could possibly have been found - it did not affect their treatment. Again, the service was run by the HSE - he is not running the HSE. Its so easy to throw mud when you haven't a clue.

I hope there is more of this.

Are you a state lawyer? Because they're the winners in this.

What part of trying to save your business makes you a 'self entitled twat'?

Putting money over public health for starters.

This is not your local corner shop, it's a souless company who will make money from property when they don't bother investing in one of their businesses anymore.

600 cases per 100k in Lifford

Next highest appears to be Celbridge at 305.

The population of Lifford is 1600.

    600 cases per 100k is 10 cases.

10 people out of a population of 1600.

The per 100k metric is pointless in many cases. If you had a town of 500 people and a family of 5 were infected that's an infection rate of 1000 per 100k. So a pointless metric in this case.

If you didn't risk public health, there'd be less of a need to spend on it.

It's like saying it's ok if I give the lad a few slaps, sure my tax contributes to the Gardai arresting me and the hospital treating his injuries.

It's the electoral area not the town itself, the population is around 25800 not 1600

:D It's the LEA and it has 156 cases. 25889 is the population.

Hopefully they use some of those whopper profits to give a good redundancy to their staff to pay them through this crisis. I imagine they will get nothing.

Another example of a company shouting "capitalism" while playing monopoly in real life then as soon as an existential threat arrives, they scream "socialism now, pay my massive mortgage"

They took on risk, it's not working out. In fairness what can they do, they should be given a repayment holiday if asked to close.

Thems the breaks. Nobody going to pay our mortgage or rent if we don't work. I feel sorry for the staff but they should look at changing industry or retraining. May be harsh but it's true. Hospitality in a pandemic is just dangerous.

Press Up Entertainment: Who is behind it and what do they do?
Paddy McKillen jnr and Matt Ryan employ 1,600 in 46 venues with plans to expand

Revenues for 2019 are expected to hit €80 million before eclipsing the €100 million mark by the end of 2021, according to Ryan. Press Up’s latest set of accounts shows that its revenues came close to €58 million in 2017.
The group’s hotel offering alone currently includes The Clarence, The Dean and The Devlin, all in Dublin.

The parent company of the bar, restaurant and hotel group, Press Up Entertainment, made an operating profit last year of €6,470,136, up 75% on the previous year.

Orsen Limited recorded earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) before exceptional items of €11,999,080 in 2018, an increase of 62% on 2017.

According to accounts just filed with the Companies Registration Office, the company's two directors Liam Cunningham and Ronnie Delany agreed to pay a final dividend of €2,700,000 to shareholders, up 170% on a year earlier

The accounts show that at the end of 2018 Orsen Limited had assets of €61,041,366.

I’m appalled at what I am reading today. At least 5 posters have stated today that any level of economic damage is ok in their eyes if we can get rid of Covid.

If given the choice, I think some people would choose martial law style lockdown until a vaccine is found, despite the fact we’d be sending the country back to the dark ages.

Talk about burning your house down to get rid of a mouse.

That poster said teachers' only contacts should be students which is absolutely absurd

There's about 35k people who have had the virus in this country and recovered, why not have exclusive events for these people with concerts, nightclubs etc solely staffed by those confirmed as recovered? Bit of a kickstart for the economy.

What a pity they don't put the same time and energy into doing something useful rather than anonymous, worthless bleating on a forum all day long. Such a waste.

I'll bet you're a big Stephen fry fan.. the idiots idea of what a smart guy should sound like..bleating, bespoke and ubiquity are probably you're buzz words de jour eh! do you have an actual point or are you phrases all non sequiturs? and stop **** to my all day long post please!

True, you'll find posters of all walks of life and backgrounds.

There is still a pandemic and this is the thread to discuss it.

Most posters tend to comment on the pandemic not imaginary people they don't like.

Quantitive easing the term you are looking for I believe.

And yes, cash flow can be created in an economy.

Thanks I'm not looking for that word though. That was a term designed to confuse people.

Virtual Magic money tree is what it is and it is a real thing now.

Much easier for people to understand. ;)

I agree but we need to focus our ire at the people responsible in the government and media for warping the public's brains.

    Remember Mark Twain's words:

“It's Easier to Fool People Than It Is to Convince Them That They Have Been Fooled.”

I know how infuriating it is to be called a ratlicker, loon, covidiot, tinfoil hatter etc when you're the one being rational but they've been manipulated and pointed at us.
