    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/health/covid-19-government-deliberately-blurred-line-between-coronavirus-law-and-advice-1.4350103?mode=amp

This won't come as a surprise to anyone, the government opting for a fear narrative in order to garner compliance due to the watery legal ground on which a lot of the restrictions were based.

Great to see so many more articles questioning the severe restrictions on economic and social life, albeit 4 months since the crisis part of the response ended.

It's wishful thinking. Last Saturday Dundrum Town Centre was buzzing and even the old Dundrum Shopping Centre (where I thought nobody went even pre-COVID :)) seemed busy. Carrickmines Retail Park was as busy as you'd have seen it on any Saturday. I saw no public fury. I saw people queuing who would rather have walked straight into the shop, sure - me included, but everyone seemed pretty good-humoured about it. Maybe if certain people got out and about a bit instead of spending so much time here bitching and moaning...

Absolutely correct. But then certain people here have agendas to constantly shout about whether that be their own or those who are pulling their strings.

Do we know when the person they announced yesterday actually died? Was it a recent death or one from months ago again?

I think someone mentioned yesterday in the main thread that according to Virgin Media (if I recall correctly) it was recent.
Can't find the post, the main thread moved really fast. . . :o

No live music for pubs and a limit to be set for the volume of TVs.

Are they in a competition to come up with most stupid rules?

They really think we are a bunch of irresponsible children.

Does nothing but keep people away resulting in job losses and more closures. Sure what’s another recession.

I think the data they got from the meat factories was that the virus spread more widely as workers had to shout over the top of the noise of the machines. Presumably keeping the background noise level down in a pub will help prevent some transmission.

I detest loud pubs - always have. This is more likely to get me to go to a pub rather than stay away. That being said, I'm kind of a curmudgeon.

Not so stupid at all. What do people do when trying to converse in a loud environment? They put their faces closer together in order to be heard. It looks like the government put more thought into this rule than you put into your jibe.

Or is it just that any measure that doesn't put the clock back to January is by definition stupid?

Apparently singing actually spreads the droplets from your lungs even further and I believe there were some outbreaks in choir groups and churches in the US so that’s why no live bands I suppose. DJs it is then. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nytimes.com/2020/06/09/arts/music/choirs-singing-coronavirus-safe.amp.html

It's not a stupid rule, it's just that you haven't bothered to find out why it has been set. We're destined for a recession either way.

You just can't detect it, people are afraid to speak their minds to people that will accuse them of being granny killers.

Lots of people approach me and speak their minds on the ridiculousness of the restrictions. I would be known for being approachable, compassionate and pragmatic however, and people can be themselves around me with fear of being labelled selfish

Is it 'fury' though...or are they just a bit pissed off? Are they foaming at the mouth and red in the face? Are they shouting?

Presumably these would be the same people who are in the habit of approaching politicians and, by amazing coincidence, telling the politician things he already agrees with.

It needs to be said again, it's keyboard warrior, curtain twitchers ("anti-relaxers") and power tripping/15 minutes of fame loving health academics and NPHET ("flat curvers") buoyed by a clickbait media and accountability fearing incompetent collection of politicians that drive the covid concern as the data hasn't fit with any sort of crisis talk since early May.

Likewise. Two things that make me cranky in a pub: having to stand and having to shout. On the other hand, I do like live music in pubs and I'd prefer to see a live band in a pub than many larger venues.

51 cases in Dublin - slight concern

6 people in ICU & 50 in hospital - concerning

R0 of 1 for the country - very concerning

Loud TVs - very very concerning

    Live bands - super concerning

Sporting events and concerts - super duper concerning

Would this lot every go back to their blackboards and leave the country alone. Absolutely sick to the back teeth of listening to guff from this lot and the two chuckle brothers MM and Donnelly.

Stop listening to it so? No reason to keep listening to it if it annoys you. I'm serious I was the same so I simply stopped watching and listening. If I want the facts and figures I know where to find them.

Great advice, I only check the news once a day
in the evening for the headlines. Don't watch or listen to anything else related to it.

The problem is though, even with just getting a very quick look at the headlines, it's very clear NPHET and the government are making knee jerk comments on a daily basis. Often completely contradicting one another.

So it seems that one of the clinical trials for a vaccine has been suspended after a second participant developed a neurological spinal cord issue called Transverse Myelitis. It causes inflammation of the spinal cord and can cause neurological issues, loss of motor function and even paralysis in extreme cases.
Apparently 1/3 of patients diagnosed with this recover but 2/3 suffer from long term neurological and spinal cord issues.

The trails have been suspended until it can be confirmed whether or not the vaccine caused the condition but it’s not good news either way.
This particular vaccine was being developed by AstraZeneca & University of Oxford, and was believed to be one of the most promising vaccines for COVID-19.

Just goes to show that pinning all of our hopes on a vaccine and putting our lives on hold until one is developed is pointless when there is no guarantee we’ll ever even manage to create one one.
This was the most promising trial and at best, it’s going to be suspended for a few months, delaying things.
At worst, it isn’t safe for purpose and they’ll need to start over.

Is there any chance that events with approx 200 people might be allowed by March 2021?

No one knows at this stage. The Government's long term plan (due to be announced next week but will be leaked by the papers over the weekend no doubt) may give some indication, but given the hyper-conservative approach so far, I wouldn't be hopeful.

Toss in other factors like the Budget and economic/employment pressures, plus of course Brexit and its effects from January and it's very hard to tell what this country will be like by March.

The long term plan should be a hoot. Considering we are 6 months in to this I would have hoped they had a long term plan already in place but clearly not. It will be a super conservative document anyway, mainly written by Zero COVID zealots and weak government officials.

If the resent nonsense is anything to go by, weddings are okay but communion and christening are not, then I fully expect a load of gobbledegook that will make little to no sense.

Add in to the fact that the media have a serious horn with getting Dublin shut down over the last few days it's hard to tell what will happen.

Glynn is turning out to be worse than Holohan. Maybe it's the pressure of the "acting" role he finds himself in.

A few days ago he was telling people to act as though anyone they meet has CV-19. Listening to RTE R1 here and apparently last night he announced people (particularly in Dublin) should act as though they have it themselves.

Scare-mongering nonsense that will only whip up the hysteria just in time for the over the top "recommendations" they'll make later on today.

This isn't March. We know now who gets sick, who's at real risk and who dies. The bottom line is this virus is not dangerous to the majority, and we are squandering what are not infinite resources and destroying public support with unhelpful statements like this.

I am starting to think that the combination of his instinctive medical conservatism and the pressure of finding himself in the top job is causing him to overreact to every set of numbers
