To be fair, I think Ronan Glynn is a much better communicator than our current Government. I do empathise that he’s had to take over at the same time as Leo & Simon changed hands with Martin & Donnelly. He’s more quietly spoken than Dr Tony, so between poorer communications on the Government side & a quieter personality of CMO - the messages are not being translated well to the public. Coupled with the fact the restrictions they’re introducing are completely daft, recipe for disaster.
How on earth Martin & Donnelly thought waffle answers at national press conferences during a Pandemic would suffice is beyond me.
On reflection during this time, one vital question will need to be asked - are the Government continually deferring to NPHET to make decisions & give themselves ‘cover’. Therefore throwing the people of Ireland & its businesses under the bus to protect themselves. Or are NPHET working on the assumption they are currently in charge & dictating policy all across Government departments.

Ronan is a badger caught in headlights, doing a rather unremarkable job. Prefer him to his predecessor however.

Donnelly is not a good man

I’m highly suspicious of those ‘Amárach’ polls...they always seem to suit the Government / RTÉ agenda...yet doesn’t reflect one single person I’m talking to of any age group, demographic.

I really wish the whole country would stop paying the license fee, would bury this propaganda machine for good. They can't lock us all up for not paying.

The Late Late Show has Ronan Glynn on tonight, I'm sure he'll be grilled by Ryan Tubridy.

Why is ronan glynn on whats essentialy an entertainment show. Shouldnt he say all that needs to be said with importance at his conference. Again, wouldbe celebs on the rise. Never underestimate the power of vanity. Ryan recovered well from this deadly disease didnt he. Whatever keeps you relevant i suppose.

Disgusting TV on RTE. Exploiting the poor girl to have a nice misery slot before Glynn.

Glynn smugly suggesting that the majority support them. But ironically they are silent.

Awkward silence when pubs were mentioned.
Awkward silence when vaccine was mentioned.

But we should just stick with them and whatever they choose to implement over the next 9 months apparently.

He is getting rave reviews in my twitter feed and rightly so, he is our Dr Fauci. It was a very impressive performance.

Why did ye all even watch it?? I was watching Netflix. I can't stomach The Late Late at the best of times but no way could I endure a dose of Ronan Glynn on a Friday night. The national obsession with this thing is definitely bordering on collective insanity. I'd hazard a pretty safe bet that we must be the only country featuring the bloody virus on weekend supposedly light entertainment shows.

    https://www.irishtimes.com/news/health/masks-key-to-reducing-covid-19-deaths-in-ireland-say-us-experts-1.4347042?mode=amp

Without masks, US academics say we'll have 1200 deaths by then end oft he year. Haha the IT now publishing "experts" in the US in order to drum up fear, the country with the worst covid response.

Let's be clear, the data shows this crisis is over and the only, the only, reason we still have restrictions and hear about it is due to a media hype campaign. There is zero data showing otherwise and the fact the media are using hyperbole is a clear demonstration of them not having any actual data to back up their narrative. Seeing Ronan G on the Late Late and Luke O'Neil launching a business to profit from covid is another example of how it is now a 15 minutes of fame thing for these unaccountable, jog for lifers.

Saying that twitter supports them is not evidence of public support, twitter is a small section of society and usually the same thinking type of people following a topic. It allows you to block people commenting on your posts so what happens is that people block comments they don't like. Always take twitter views with a huge box of salt. The majority of people I have met for weeks do not strictly follow the guidance, particularly the social distancing ones, they wear masks in certain settings as is required but it is just optics. Actual public support has subsided and people are just waiting for the all clear to get out and back to normal as they are not in fact fearful (why should they be?) like the media articles and Ronan Glynn with NPHET would prefer them to be.

Tubs would explode if he thought he could get the virus on for an exclusive interview, it'd be like all his Christmas Toy Shows came at once

Wait until the “vast approach” are asked to stump up the cash to pay for it.

The bill hasn’t been presented yet but it’s in the post.

The support is high because the fear level has been ramped up since March. Easy to frighten people into a behaviour very difficult to unwind said fear.

'Some people are getting a little terrorised': Tánaiste says we should not be obsessing about daily Covid numbers - https://www.thejournal.ie/varadkar-daily-covid-numbers-5195709-Sep2020/
“I think what we need to explain to people what case numbers mean. All a case number is is an individual who has had a swab test and tested positive for SARS-CoV-2. That doesn’t mean they’re sick – in fact most people who are testing positive now are people that are asymptomatic… who could pass it on to people… but who wouldn’t even have been tested back in February or March when we were still ramping up the testing and we were only testing people with symptoms,” said the Tánaiste.

At least most are asymptomatic eh?

The elderly and vulnerable are still exposed of course, but looking at it from a positive angle - most of those infected are not showing much if any symptoms.

Why do they want to keep a record of what people are eating if they are going to open all pubs in a week or so, surely that will end the Covid meal crap?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,738 ✭✭✭robbiezero

I see in the same article
Separately, Minister for Sport Catherine Martin has asked the heads of sporting organisations to examine the international evidence for spectators returning to events, and to present a case to be brought to health officials as part of preparing the Government’s new Covid roadmap later this month.

Is that a "Give me the ammo to put this NPHET crowd back on their arses".
Again great news if so. This was one of the more nonsense restrictions and I believe was the point at where they lost a lot of people?

Surely it should be the other way around. Extraordinary measures require extraordinary evidence, so if they government want to keep sport shut down they should be presenting the case.

Where's the evidence to suggest having spectators in an outdoor setting is a major risk? Asking the organisations to try and prove a negative is a fools errand.

"Well, yeah, you know, that's just, like, your opinion, man"

I thought Glynn was measured overall, despite the line of questioning that Tubridy was throwing at him.
'Do we have the virus under control? In which he answered 'Yes' to be followed by 'But are you concerned about the numbers / What about the increase in numbers? ' and other questions trying to get him to make some sort of controversial, fear filled statement.
I cannot stand the way Tubridy interviews at the best of times and don't enjoy the Late Late with him as a host. He cuts across people, fills people with misery on a Friday night and generally disrespects some of his guests.
One interesting point Glynn made was that no Expert in the world can predict the future in relation to this virus, it's still an unknown. Thought this was a good thinly veiled dig at the cohort of Professors here who continually make hyperbolic statements to the media about four more waves of Covid, new waves, chaos is coming, etc.

I can't bear him as an interviewer.
The nervousness, the twitching, the nervous laughter. He has a list of questions and come hell or high water, he will ask them regardless of the flow of the interview. It all comes across as very forced and unnatural.
Really good interviewers have a list of questions as a sort of backup for when the chat dries up but are able to go with the flow. Tubridy almost has a set time when he has to ask each question and will do so even if he has to interrupt.
    Its almost Partridge-like at times.
