He could be in a spot of bother alright.

    https://www.espn.com/soccer/manchester-united/story/4164069/man-united-captain-maguire-detained-on-greek-island-after-brawl

"The soccer player was verbally abusive to an officer and then hit him," a police official said. "The three were resisting when brought to the Mykonos police station."

About as good as another club captain I recall assaulting a DJ in a night club cos he wouldn't play said captains favourite song.

Could you not just say he did wrong, stop trying to deflect and cut out the crap? Just because someone else did something doesn't excuse what Maguire has done.

Oh so its ok for one set of fans to say its a "Great example for a club captain to set" in nothing more than a point scoring excercise ;) As usual ignoring their own past indiscretions as if they never happened. ;)

None of us have any knowledge of what happened. Allow due process and lets see what really happened. Its easy to throw stones in glasses houses.

Maguire isn't the first and won't be the last club captain to be arrested.

Yeah Utd need to do the right thing here now, learn from our mistakes and not have their players wear Free Harry Maguire tee-shirts.
This could be jail time if it's assault of a police officer as is being reported, although I assume the Greek police are well used to being assaulted by UK tourists.

Yep, as i said allow due process and lets see what comes from it. Looks terrible right now.

There you go again, sure I think they did it to take the piss so I'm going to have a jab back.

Nothing anyone has posted is wrong. It's a poor example for a club capitan to set. Posting about other wrong doings years ago doesn't change that.

People are posting about an incident that has being reported on Sky. And going on those facts. I bet it's being discussed in the United thread as well and I'd be very surprised if I didn't see mention of it being a bad look for the club capitan.

I always wondered why English fans abuse their own players. Throw the book at him, set an example of the English thug would be my preferred action(If he did punch the cop).

There's something about the English (not all of them obviously) that they just always seem to be involved in trouble when they go on holidays.

Wasn't there a big problem with them sitting on the streets in Spain during lockdown and gave the police loads to f trouble when they tried to move them on?

Nothing is proven yet, its all just claims so could be nonsense
But surely you do realise why people think assaulting a police man outside a bar during a global pandemic is different form getting into a row with a DJ ,

Of course it would be best if neither incident happened and no point measuring who is worse as none of us know what really happened in both incidents .

As you said you just got to see what happens and move on ,

Exactly correct. Until we all know whats happened lets not stone the lad to death. Allow due process

I dont think anyone is saying which incident is worse, I think most are just confused as fcuk as to why someone is so petty and desperate to bring up an incident that occurred over a decade ago in an attempt to deflect and start yet another clusterfcuk of an argument between United and Liverpool supporters in the general PL thread.

Well done brinty, once again a job well done.

Holidays i would guess. I doubt United would go straight into preseason after the Europa league

I wonder will this affect his return to pre-season training?

If he did assault a police officer, there could be charges and a delayed release from the country. I'm not sure what the current quarantine rules are for UK & Greece but that would be an extra 14 days. There is a tight timeline for return to play as it is.

No quarantine for Greece for returning to the UK as it stands.

But even then elite athletes are exempt

No quarantine for elite sportspeople as per UK government advice, just lots of continuous testing.
To be honest sport wouldn't be able to cope with a 14 day rule, as players will going abroad for midweek internationals/ECL/Europa throughout the season.

    That clears up that then!

He still might end up being kept in Greece for a few days longer. But we don't know if he was staying for another week or whatever anyways before this incident.

is harry kane not in quarentine after a holiday?? i thought i had read that which would mean he shouldnt be if exempt

Is it not very risky for a player to go on holiday as while you are away the destination you go to could be added to a list of countries that you have to quarantine for 14 days on your return. This happened with Croatia yesterday and Spain a few weeks ago.

Happened with Austria which has quarantine for those returning after 4am tomorrow. But doesn't apply to PL teams. Liverpool were already in Austria prior to the decision and are playing 2 games there after the quarantine rules come into effect overnight.

You're quite right as it happens, just read up on it now. Bahamas removed from the safe list whilst he was there. I thought his 'elite sportsperson status' overrode that, but apparently not.

It raises an interesting point I guess if a country (lets say Greece as we are talking about it) gets removed from the safe-list the day Liverpool or MUFC arrive there for an ECL game against Panathaniokos. 14 days q on return?

is it a blanket rule for elite athletes no matter the situation?

for example, Liverpool being in Austria at the moment as a team, in an extremely controlled & professional environment, you'd understand the exception there.

but compare that then to we'll say Harry Maguire, abroad acting the maggot with his mates in Greece, surely that's a different situation altogether!?

Is the elite sports thing not for matches/training/camps etc and individual holidays are treated separately?

    Yeah that must be it.

The UK announces it ahead of time by a few days so people can get home early. Costs a lot for the layperson at short notice and it's been annoying a lot of people but people earning what Maguire must do should be able to return in time easily (if not in jail)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 16,842 ✭✭✭✭Fitz*

My understanding was that Liverpool got the excemption as they were in Austria to play 2 games, against Salzburg & Stuttgart. The games were organised & players in the country before the announcement was made, and as they are elite athletes in the country for the purpose of a elite athlete activity, they are exempt.

A personal holiday wouldn't fall into that category.

No doubt someone has video footage that will be leaked. These things are always blown out of proportion. He was probably on the fringes looking on. Players rarely get caught up in something this serious.
