My initial anxiety was about the virus, then the fallout. My current anxiety is about how long it’s taking for **** to the hit the fan. I flip flop from “maybe it’ll be ok” to “Jesus, this is painfully slow, long road ahead”
There's positives - particularly on the vaccine front, so far everything has gone very smoothly in research & development. If the virus had been more like Dengue, we would have been in a terrible situation - no good vaccines, and each subsequent infection worse than the other.

If we can get good information from vaccine trials in the next few months I think things will change. Governments will borrow a small fortune knowing that they just have to keep things going until probably mid-2021, and businesses will also start borrowing to invest for post-covid. If we get bad news (unlikely hopefully), then governments will not be able to borrow enough to avoid a big downturn.

    Why retail?

It should be every indoor public building, factories, libraries, schools, colleges.

Instead of some stupid rule, if you can't social distance, wear a mask. It should be wear a mask indoors anywhere there's people.

One user on boards has linked to the HSE aware of aerosol transmission and there's very little measures in place for this type of transmission. Instead they go on about social distancing and hand washing.

I don’t know why it’s only retail You would imagine like you said banks , credit unions and the likes need to be included in the new laws. You have numerous places it should be enforced along with retail.

Thanks for that, also appreciate all your updates on the vaccine thread which I’m following closely too.

It’s also around the economic outlook. Even businesses that appear safe now have the potential to be in trouble when those already in trouble curb their spending. I’m luckily still working but noticed myself subconsciously and consciously tightening purse strings as this goes on longer. Probably PTSD from the last recession/learned behaviour

I do think we’ve a dark few months ahead, but having light at the end of the tunnel with an imminent vaccine would certainly help the psyche.

Even as one of the "doomsters" i thought this would be done with by september. Have been relaxing more recently, going to the gym to see the set up etc but doubt ill be making this a regular thing. Im just not mentally prepared for this disruption and worry to drag on and on - surely as a society we can be more creative and determined than we have been.

Maybe the good Boris was right....??

Let the virus off to f***, thin the herd, feel the pinch, but gain herd immunity as the end result??

I recall one of his early speeches, were he strongly hinted at basically imprisoning the elderly & the infirm, and let the rest of em get a dose of the virus and we'll all be grand after that..

How long will people stay compliant? A fella can only take so much of working all week, watching the late late show, and avoiding the Mrs as best he can..

Either they're being over-cautious or they're not giving us the real figures

As the number's guy on boards, can you explain why you think they're not giving us the real figures?

Gibraltar, Monaco and San Marino being on and off of green lists shows what clowns are running this country.

    Yes, completely pointless.
Also Malta kicked off the greenlist simply because they rescued a boat which contained a lot of infected refugees.
Nice kick in the Stones for them.

Is there an age requirement for the wearing of face coverings?

I've seen kids wearing face masks.

If masks are to become mandatory, there needs to be serious education distributed on how to wear them. A lot of people mean well enough to at least try to wear one but incorrect fitting and malpractice in terms of fidgeting with it or periodically taking it off every few seconds as it suits is actually more dangerous than not wearing one at all.

An alarming minority don't cover their nose or like to wear them as a chin-bra.

Many people are more likely to infect themselves with COVID or other illnesses through incorrect mask usage.

And so far they are not required to wear them.

By touching the infected mask that caught the droplets that would have hit them directly if no mask was worn?

Very soft interview on Prime Time

No real hard questions for him

I've seen kids not long out of nappies wearing them - no excuse for a grown adult not to

The thing I don't get is that the things causing the surges (food factories and Direct provision centres) are what were always deemed essential services and were never closed in the first place.

Those cases have nothing to do with restrictions in any phase yet the solution seems to be deemed to delay things like opening pubs fully or allowing larger outdoor gatherings which haven't been causing any cases in the first place.

The outdoor gathering thing really bothers me, lots of people want to do a road race or go watch a match and there is no evidence whatsoever that such things cause infections but are effectively getting the blame.

Bad and all as it is to have this pandemic and all the uncertainty into the future at least we are riding it out here in reasonable comfort. Imagine being in Beirut tonight. Or India. Or the favelas of Brazil. I really think we should maintain perspective.

    Highly unlikely for under 10s.

I really don’t think a lot of us realise the full extent of the effect this is having on all our minds and well being....I’m clinging to the positive news stories (few and far between) and trying to maintain some semblance of “normality” but it’s hard to relax a lot of the time; worry about the future always in the back of your mind, and the thought of this going on longer than the early part of next year :-( I’m sort of preparing myself for it going on till at least then before a vaccine may be approved.

I don't understand why you don't think the argument in favour of keeping pubs closed is compelling.

They're inherently risky environments given what we know about the transmission of the disease, just behind nightclubs in the level of risk. And we're in a period of great uncertainty. It would be a mad shot in the dark, in my view, to just give it a lash with the pubs and, sure, we'll see how it goes.
There's not a hope social distancing will be maintained in schools. Not a chance.

Numerous holes in the plans for reopening schools alright, but I still think keeping the pubs closed is the right thing to do.

What you've described doesn't make you a doomster given that my approach is similair to mine and Id be probably considered a sugercoater by some. I made a decision to not be dismissive of the virus but to not be the world is burning and we are doomed. Maybe others can do that but mentally I had to find a happy medium which took it serious but not let it paralyse me. I think I've done that but that's starting to wear thin. And I know social media in and of itself is a bad place but the people happy the pubs will stay closed possibly for many months aren't seeing the staff who have families and all the rest.

So fr336 I don't think you're alone in what you described.
