I thought junior ministers got a pay increase

I'd work for half the minister's salaries and perks

This "new" government is making a rights balls of everything

2 juniors were already on the increased salary and 1 was brought up to that level.

Now this evening its been confirmed all of government are to take a 10% pay cut

There is something about the emergency Covid payment being stopped that doesn't sit well with me.

Was this an explicit term of receiving the payment that you have to stay in the country?

How are they linking passports to PPSN numbers?

How do the immigration authorities have information on who is receiving the Covid payment?

This has a scandal written all over it.

I'd prefer more control at the airports for incoming travellers than outgoing, tests and quarantine etc.,

Sweden doing well now with no lock down

It doesn’t make a difference what the reason is

Eh, to a great extent it will discourage Frivolous travel to hotspots. So there will hopefully be fewer returning who may carry the virus. I doubt those who travel on holidays will do the 14 days restriction fully, because if they do go abroad on a non essential trip they don't really care anyway.

Third paragraph "more than 5500 people have died in a country of 10 million". A few thousand lives could have been saved by stricter restrictions, are those people's lives not worth it? Let me guess, in your expert medical opinion those people were sick/elderly and would have died anyway??? Heard it all before.

Their Scandinavian neighbours have done exponentially better at saving lives as has most of Europe. I'm glad that we don't live in a country where they thought they would conduct a stupid biological experiment like Sweden or Belarus or even the UK in the early days.

The countries that didn't lock down or did little of it have seen much slower recoveries, economy wise.

Sweden's plan short term looked bad, but long term seems to be working , we will see but I think when we look back we will see Sweden as one of the best countries to handle this - not as good as Norway of course, but still - strict lockdowns doesn't mean dealing with it well, look at Spain, massive death toll and about to enter a second draconian lockdown...

If it can be proved that its an essential journey, of course you can.

But if an Anto is going off on his holliers for a week, then the likes of that should be subject to censure.

Who is this Anto character? There's been so many antos mentioned in this forum they must be their own ethnic group at this point.

Of course there's a difference between visiting a sick family member and just going on a holiday.

You don't see how one could be viewed as essential travel and one is not?

My opinion now is that lockdowns dont work, they just delay the inevitible surge that happens on reopening and cause tons of economic and social damage into the bargain. In a few weeks Ireland will see cases rising even more and you'll be back where you started. Seems to be happening everywhere because you cant stay shut down indefinitely and you can't close off the country indefinitely. I hope the authorities actually used the lockdown for what it was intended and prepared the hospitals and resources because you'll probably need it.

Meanwhile places like Sweden, new york, Florida, texas, Lombardy etc will be back to normal much quicker now that the virus has burned out or is in the process of doing so in those places.

Thats not to say no measures should be taken but another lockdown isn't the answer. Masks, social distancing and protecting vulnerable populations should be the way forward with this to limit the spread and deaths as much as possible but the only way out of it is through it IMO.

It's the worst boards word. The second worst is 'de gubbermint' but some people seem to think it's the ultimate checkmate.

He probably works in construction, eats chicken fillet rolls for breakfast but doesn’t socially distance while queuing or eating it, has gone to every karaoke house party in Dublin and is calling for de pubs to open in the journal.
Probably been to all the house parties in Kerry and Clare too. And now he’s off the Ibiza.
    I jest of course.

Most of us are Working Class. And pay for everything for everyone, and get little back for ourselves in return. You rarely hear any moaning from that cohort despite everything. But the minute a spotlight is placed on the recipients of our taxes, well all hell breaks loose.

The wealthy don't care, and those on benefits don't care either, so it was always on us, the working class, yep. The silent people.

Sounds like they are doing about the same as everyone else, but two months later. Except no other country wants to let Swedes in their country.

"Sweden's unemployment rate of 9% remains the highest in the Nordics, up from 7.1% in March."

At the moment Sweden is a good case study for how not to handle a pandemic, not only because they chose a different route to most others. It's possible it might be different in the future, but at the moment there's no reason to say they did great.

It wasn't Anto that brought this virus here though I'd wager, but people who could afford international holidays early in the new year and people whose job entailed jetting here, there and everywhere on a whim. And I ain't jesting. ;)

According to the government because I lost my job and am claiming I cannot leave the country.
Do you realise people could have holidays booked prior to losing jobs btw or are you just generalising on purpose?

There’s absolutely nothing stopping anyone leaving the country. There have been zero reports of social welfare officers removing people from departing planes that I can see.

I’d rather not go broke for going abroad tbh, I’m lucky I have family that will look after me if needs be, some aren’t as lucky.

So choose not to go abroad at the moment. But you have the choice. 104 people had that choice so far and decided to head off on hols and are now facing the consequences

People who likely booked trips abroad months ago? Airlines refusing to give refunds, basically forcing people to travel, and you blame the people.

There was actually a tweet confirming this from David Higgins on Twitter who post covid data analysis. Can’t find it on mobile but median income of cases was high at the beginning, those who can afford ski trips in February, and worked its way lower and lower, those who are on lower-paid, more essential jobs, not working from home, such as healthcare and essential services.

No one was forced to travel.

How would these people be worse off by staying at home?

I’d rather run and jump than let the airlines take my money for nothing tbh, they’re forcing people to travel and if you think otherwise you’re delusional.

Nah I’m not allowing people to defend the travel industry forcing people to travel. I’m lucky my summer trip was with a reputable European airline or I’d be in Germany right now.
