People do though. That's the point. We need to mitigate risk. We need to maintain good hygiene standards and social distancing.

    Yes. Plus wear masks.

As he says wear a mask to protect him or my niece and they will wear a mask to protect you.

Supermarkets weren't "flung open", they never closed. Cases dropped because of good hygiene and social distancing, and also because steps were taken to improve conditions in nursing homes. The two things that helped reduce transmission amongst the general public are being lost because of all the people banging on about masks.

You are wasting your time. You are arguing with people who are vulnerable, elderly or very frightened. They want you to exist as they do. Just ignore them.

Actually most of us are very healthy people who would fall into the low risk categories for death or disability from coronavirus. It’s just that we’re also in the category of intelligent people who are concerned about the vulnerable and the elderly and the frightened. What’s your excuse? Some hard man who thinks he can’t be an asymptomatic carrier, can’t infect your loved ones who aren’t as bullet proof? Are you from Krypton or what else is your secret to that level of self inflated sense of invincibility, tbph?

Well you will be existing in a certain way now the law on masks is here :) I guess the government just ignored you.

Why can't you just accept that most people will wear one and that's what counts. Why hound people?

You know nothing about 'most' people and nothing about me, so your post is nonsense.

I know you get a kick out of seeing people wearing masks against their will, but that's actually very sad.

Best of luck to her. It's a great idea behind that, isn't it. You protect me, I protect you. Yet there's portion of people who refuse that kind of thinking. Even when they exposed to new virus, which brought this country and most of the world into big troubles. Yet such a minor additional measure like a face mask, to keep folks healthy, to keep economy going, is such a problem for some. From my point of view it's unbelievable.

So you get to be the expert on what type of people are here and nobody else does? Affording yourself even more special standards I see.

Not people with medical exemptions. People who can't be arsed to wear a variety of face coverings during a pandemic? Yes, all day long. Just what is the big deal? And why do the same people dismiss masks straight away? Is the concern for others so little no thought is even given to it?

Some true colours coming out. This post just drips with contempt for those who are most vulnerable to the coronavirus.

By contrast those urging people to wear masks - and in their ranks are the healthy and vulnerable - stress their fraternity and solidarity with all in this crisis.

I find it bizarre that we weren't advised to wear masks only a few weeks ago but we are now?

I saw something in the Irish Times today about a 'snazzy' mask that can be made from your granddad's old pyjamas - sounds very scientific to me and will no doubt stop a deadly virus in its tracks!

Well originally there were not enough masks to go around and we were also on lockdown. Now we are mixing, the R number is going up qucker than expected and masks are plentiful, so wearing masks is better than lockdown

    We didn't have enough masks.
We were in lockdown. Public transport capacity was reduced and many shops were closed.
We can't maintain such restrictions indefinitely and it was with the introduction of mandatory masks that public transport capacity increased from 25% to 50% with social distancing reduced to 1m.
We now see the evidence from other countries which did adopt masks as to their effectiveness.

I was on a bus and everyone was wearing a mask, the first time that's happened to me. Usually there's a few younger ones without a mask, but not this time.

Because as you’re alluding to masks have been in critically short supply with most medical grade PPE being needed for hospitals. The PPE supply chain is under incredible strain. This is why the US didn’t start urging masks until April/late March, there had already been hoarding and extortionate reselling of surgical grade masks and hand sanitizer at the start of the year, along with toilet paper and other common goods. It’s why the public has been asked to make or find woven masks over surgical grade masks or N95s

There are a lot of woven masks available on the market now, and it would be good to get a few. Seen that Haines, popular underwear brand, has started selling packs of them as ordinarily as you would socks.

Sanitizer supply is still in a crunch. Our local stores have run out of your atypical gel type, and are selling the straight liquid variety being made by special demand from local and regional distilleries.

Well, no, excess mortality was not associated with that quantity.

Right, so why dont the authorities say that? And why dont they admit (if true) that they were happy for covid 19 to be ravaging the community because they wanted to protect supplies for healthcare professionals?

Provide a source or stop posting fake news.
We lost well over 1000 people here to coronavirus.
    Waiting for your figures.

Provide a source? For the excess mortality? Has your head been in the sand? It was headline news for days a couple of weeks ago

I won't waste time on their games:

1,752 dead Irish souls as of yesterday. Ireland is seeing a 7.5% mortality rate which is alarmingly high.
