I thought this would the Bane mask people's time to shine

I think cases are spiking because so many Yanks are landing here from places like Florida.

It is insane the government hasn't banned all travel from the US

There have been 6 imported cases from the USA (edit) in 6 weeks. Our spread is within our own community.

Face coverings are being made mandatory in shops etc where social distancing can't be maintained. The gym most likely will not fall into this category.

You won't need to wear a face covering in restaurants and bars for example

I couldn't do it either. I would really struggle. It would really make me not want to go to the gym.
On the other hand the DOMs I have this week is a huge struggle too, and I would hate to have to go through another stint of no gym and back to DOMs again.

Where did you get those numbers out of interest? The HPSC report dated 15th July has a total of 420 imported cases. The same HPSC report dated 30th June has 384 imported cases, which would be 36 in the last 2 weeks.

That's not to say that numbers are increasing solely because of allowing in tourists from 'hotspots' but it's something that should be addressed nonetheless.

Never been a better reason to not feel guilty about skipping cardio.

This is not true, one day last week out of 23 cases, 15 of them were due to travel and that was reported by NPHET. Most cases in recent weeks have been due to people importing this virus because it was virtually zero in the community towards the end of June.

This is never going to go back to zero folks. If we can keep the numbers of new cases low and the R number below 1 then we should be able to manage. My concern would be the shocking lack of leadership from government on allowing yanks and British tourists into Ireland. It really makes a mockery of all the sacrifices we as a nation have endured. It also undermines the argument stopping Irish people travelling abroad on holidays.

It's the flu season that will really test this country because all over Ireland you will have people with coughs and fever, not sure whether they have covid or not. It will cause panic in workplaces which is why working from home should be encouraged till next summer.

Gyms are a risk factor no doubt. If you look at Bournemouth a few weeks back, they declared an emergency because hundreds of thousands of people went sun bathing, but there was no blowback in the case numbers since. This virus loves tight groups indoors. Pubs are a huge risk, especially busy pubs and jarred punters not social distancing, so I can understand why bars still can't open. Gyms while less populated than a busy bar, do gave people huffing and puffing as they exercise, all of which is happening indoors, so that would definitely be a risk.

As far as wearing a mask in the gym is concerned, it's very doable. You might have to focus a bit more on your breathing but that would benefit your lungs in the long run. Ultimately you could have the virus and not know and as we all know wearing masks stop me from giving it to you.

Masks will not be required in gyms. For now at least.

    1. Face coverings
The Government agreed today that face coverings should be worn by all customers in shops and shopping centres across the country. Retail staff will also be required to wear a face covering unless there is a partition between them and members of the public or where there is a distance of 2 metres between them and members of the public. Regulations, with details on enforcement and penalties are in the process of being drafted.

Most gyms opened almost 3 weeks ago, so if FLYEfit don't open on the 20th and decide to open on the 10th of August then I imagine LOTS of members will leave for other gyms.

    Maybe.

But in a lot of instances, there won't be one that suits people better than FF in the same price range so people won't be happy and they will lose members but I doubt they will lose members en masse in the short term.

So how long should this DOMS last?

I see flyefit had a countdown on their insta story saying 3 days till reopening so looks like the 20th is still on!

    Praise Be!

I went a bit too hard on the squats day 1 and it lasted 5 days, days 3-4 were agony. I had been doing a good bit of BW stuff during the break but it clearly didn’t prepare me in any way for the barbell.

Anybody just starting back, ease in to it !

It wouldn't bother me. As far as I'm aware only 1 gym near me has re-opened and I was never interested in going there anyway.

I’m quite shocked at how negligent and lax my gym has been since it has reopened.

I expected there to be sanitiser and blue roll at each machine, a member of staff on the floor at all times making sure everyone is wiping their equipment, reception to make sure everyone has a sweat towel entering and their to be time slots.

None of these were put in place.

For the first week, I spotted 4 (3 downstairs and 1 upstairs) sanitiser bottles and two things of blue roll for the whole gym. We were then told on the Sunday, at the end of the first week, we needed to bring our own sanitiser wipes as the blue roll was running out. They said we would be told to leave if we didn’t bring wipes. This was fine by me, but no member of staff enforced these rules in the week and a half since we were told. I would guess I have seen about 30/40% of people with wipes since. I observed an Irish guy in his mid 30s use 5 different pieces of cardio equipment yesterday in the space of 35/40 minutes and he had nothing with him. Similarly I’ve seen a group of 4 lads every day in the gym for the last week with 1 very small sweat towel between them.

I have seen other gyms implement times slots. There is none of that in the gym I go to. And it has been quite busy most days I’ve been there.

I even saw one of the part owners working out and he had nothing with him in terms of wipes or towel.

I guess I could just not go but it is frustrating for those that are trying their best.

Ben Dunne gyms won't be reopening at all now it seems. There were plenty who suggested he was bluffing in the very early stages but there were wrong.

Didn't catch all of his radio interview, but he seemed a bit... off. If he said that, it's a bit strange considering they've pumped a huge wad of cash into refitting blanch.

Yeah, he specifically referenced that and said that trials there showed social distancing wasn't possible. Only thing is that by those standards we might as well close down the country.

Exactly. I've seen pics of the revamped blanch gym. Distancing isn't possible because they've absolutely rammed equipment in beside each other. Also, making masks mandatory would go a long way.

Did they ever officially say 90 minutes? The only place I saw 90 mentioned was on this thread

With what they announced, it probably is 90 minute blocks, where it is 75 minutes for working out and 15 minutes for staff to clean and do a swap over of customers.

Why dont you ask to speak to management, make it clear what you have seen and if they do nothing report them.

I think the ability to book opens at 5.30am on Sunday, and you can only book 24 hours in advance

And if it's like their old class system it probably does mean 24 hours and not anytime next day.

He's saying one thing and telling staff another.. and the contractors doing up blanch by the sounds of it. Strange stuff. He sounded stressed out of his mind on the radio earlier.

They said 60 minutes officially on Instagram, with 30 minutes cleaning/closed after each block of 60 mins.
