Put my mask on again today as I'm trying to get into the habit went into Lidl and I was the only one wearing that I saw, I didn't rip it off in disgust!

But while I think it's better to wear than not I also think when the coughs and colds season hits the government will make them mandatory indoors so get used to them.

We're in the middle of a pandemic, masks mandatory on public transport and drivers won't enforce the mandatory wearing. You're not going to get guards standing at the entrance of buses... So same as always even with mandatory masks.

Why the fcuk are they (Irish people and their stupid thinking, "they can't make me" and our government) happy with spreading disease about the place?

People should just cop the fcuk on.

Now that masks are mandatory on public transport, with non-enforcement can I sue bus eireann if I picked up covid on the bus?

How would you prove where you caught it?

    That would be difficult alright.

The latest news story of 30+ people partying down in Killarney. One of them travelled by bus. And the Irish times said that this was being followed up... So I presume they are tracing people that used the same bus. If you were told to isolate after that and get symptoms, it wouldn't be all that hard to prove.

Hang the fcukers out to dry if they won't enforce mandatory wearing of masks.

I wish they would get on with it.

Sadly, there is still only a minority of people wearing them in shops. Everybody needs to be wearing them so we can protect each other.

It looks like England are making them mandatory in retail now, I have no doubt we will copy them as usual, so it's a matter of when, not if.

God knows how many will be infected in the meantime because of our governments ineptitude and procrastination.

This nonsense of a €2500 fine or a prison sentence won't work. They should just make it a €100—€150 fine and enforce it properly

So a driver can drive a bus safely and not get themselves or their passengers killed, but it's a different story with spreading disease on a bus?

When I was growing up we had bus conductors on all buses. We had public toilets scattered about the place. These provided jobs for people. What's wrong with going back to the way things were?

I was on a bus in China a couple of years back and a bus that could hold no more than 12 people had a conductor.

I visited a public toilet on Macau and you could eat a meal off the floor. As soon as you used the toilet there was an attendant who immediately cleaned the area after you.

We need transport police. A conductor would only be useful if they can rely on gardai to deal with the crowd that tells them to FO when challenged.

True. That's overkill and pointless. On the spot 100 euro spot fine would be enough of a deterrent.

All the drivers have to do is report it to the guards. It shouldn't have been made into such a big deal. Nobody's asking them to confront non compliants, I suspect they are trying to piggyback on this issue to push for more security, which they have sought after for year's.

Masks are really being unnecessarily overcomplicated and convoluted at everystage. Ireland are crying out for strong leadership on this and many other issues. Instead all we see from our politicians is petty squabbling, point scoring, and pandering to big businesses.

If your house is burgled/car robbed you’ll be waiting hours for a cop to turn up. I doubt they’re gonna be turning on the blues and twos to get to a bus stop.

Bus drivers in Dublin have been threatened just for asking passengers to pay their fare.

But the Driver is not spreading the disease, nor has he the authority to enforce mask wearing. driving safely is his job, not enforcing mask wearing, that is a matter for the Garda

It’s beyond me why anyone who can wear a mask would take issue with having to do so? Yes they can be hot and uncomfortable but surely that’s a small price to pay to prevent yourself or those you love from ending up in intensive care or worse?

If you have a genuine reason why you can’t wear a mask fair enough though I think in such cases it should be a requirement that you get a doctor’s letter or cert.

Otherwise as far as I’m concerned you’re just making excuses and being selfish and inconsiderate.

The sooner we all start following the rules the sooner this will end and we can all go back to normal.

Not across the city anyway, a quick look at twitter will tell anyone all they need to know.

Been on 2 services this morning myself no different to last week.

Nobody stopped getting on buses while I was waiting for my bus either.

Inspectors are getting on with clipboards and counting but I asked the driver and he said its purely to check capacity and see what services need additional capacity

He actually does, because he's the driver and is in charge of the vehicle. The same way they enforce everything - tell the offending person to get off the bus and refuse to move until they do.

    Interesting Stephen

I wonder if they're targeting just the bigger routes for compliance

    Just seen this too
Security guards on the Luas are enforcing masks too, asking people to get off, if they don't have a mask on.

People are complying and getting off the Luas

There was always a few drivers enforcing it before last week but seems like any other normal day so far. I'd say about 40-50% compliance on the buses I've been on

The drivers shouldn't be obligated to enforce it though, they aren't paid enough for the inevitable **** they'd have to deal with.

On the train out to Howth yesterday - compliance was pretty good with the exception of (no surprise) large groups of teenagers. On the return journey, seemed like less compliance. Quite possibly a fair few tourists who may have been unaware of the rules (and, as of today, law).
I wonder if compliance at weekends will be lower given it's less likely to have regular workers on board and more people visiting for leisure.

How was Howth and the DART in terms of crowds? Going out to there and Dun Laoghaire is one of the nice things to do during summer (and winter).

Well I wasn't actually going to Howth (just in the direction of) so can't tell but traffic at Sutton was very heavy and from speaking with family, it's been very busy out there.

Got the dart into town from Blackrock on Saturday evening and I'd say about 40% of travellers were wearing masks. Obviously wasn't compulsory then but I don't know how they'd police it anyway. To be fair the dart was dead quiet so it was easy for everyone to stay distanced.
