You're like a fella fist pumping because he scores the first point in a match.

That's a bit much. Citizen's posts are by far the most balanced and informative on this thread

Of course this is only Round 1. But it doesn't mean we can't have our smiles to some victories after the stress of the last 3-4 months

If you're referring to me I don't drink.

A fluctuating R value is concern anywhere, particularly the reasons behind it.

Some pains in the hole think their intellects because they have a few new buzz words since March, like R0:rolleyes:
If you watch the press conferences you'd know that r-value means very little when case numbers are this low.
In basic terms, if one person infects 2 other people and we have 3 cases, r number = 2.

We have well and truly crushed the curve. Testing increased 3 fold this week and case numbers are this low. Fantastic stuff.

It's great to see light at the end of the tunnel. Thought this stat was sign of great progress. https://twitter.com/newschambers/status/1279093968157003778

And this is also at the root of the dramatic German "surge" in R0.

The first day of phase 1 reopening we had 88 cases.

7 weeks later with additional reopening our daily cases are around the 10-20 mark.

Think that’s a job well done so far.

Let's enjoy our victories when we can.

    They're pyrrhic.

There's no news today. We're at the same stage as we were a month ago in supressing the virus, it's well under control here, which is good. But coming on here for a celebration of nothing? The world is recording record cases of the virus. We live in a global village. It will be hard to keep it from coming back strongly.

When there's a vaccine and a couple of hundred new cases globally a day i'll celebrate with you.

Yea hopefully with the virus suppressed at such low levels it will work out for us better than other countries.

My only concern now is out of sight, out of mind.

As we’ve seen. It only takes a one person to trigger an epidemic.

Good first day on the job

    Dr. Ronan Glynn, Acting Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said;

“Ireland’s 14-day incidence of COVID-19 is now less than 3 cases per 100,000. This is amongst the lowest in Europe and demonstrates that the disease remains suppressed in our communities. The key to maintaining this status is responsible individual behaviours and avoiding any complacency.”

“HIQA’s report on mortality today demonstrates that we have comprehensively recorded deaths relating to COVID-19 in Ireland by following the recommended WHO approach.

“We have consistently recorded and published data on all deaths where a person had COVID-19 or was suspected to have COVID-19. This reporting gives us a robust understanding of the impact of the disease in Ireland and continues to inform our response"

He thinks he owns the thread, suggesting thread bans earlier.

He then says to me 'you must be a new poster'. The cheek, anyone can post on here. I've a life and only post ocassionally.
I think this is the best insult I've gotten so far, bravo!

An Garda Síochána will begin conducting checks of licensed premises nationwide this evening in relation to adherence to the public health guidelines for Covid-19.

In a statement, it said "this follows concerns from Garda management, the public and industry representative bodies that some licensed premises and their customers have not been adhering to the public health guidelines since the reopening of licensed premises on Monday of this week.

That's all great and the Irish citizenry have been exemplary BUT and it's a big one...

This is only round 1. It's a fight with an unknown number of rounds. Reinfection can occur very easily with travel. The bulk of our population hasn't been exposed to the virus. When autumn comes we may have other strains of flu combined with covid.

You're like a fella fist pumping because he scores the first point in a match.

While we are doing well due to our efforts we're only as good as our neighbours to the west and east governed by the blond buffoons.

How do you know this is only Round 1 or "The first point in the match"?
We could be 20 points clear half way through the second half too.

I wouldn't say it's nothing tbf and think most people on this forum are engaged enough to know global context but stable and decreasing numbers in context of other countries and regions having spikes is definitely welcome. With all the hard work and sacrifices made to be in such a positive place I won't begrudge anyone taking joy from it. Not clear of this virus by any means but still great sign of progress.

Actually it doesn't but they can be a good start. Some clusters have started and fizzled out while others have exploded.

Some don't get that. They're celebrating the fact the numbers are low now and we've tested 3 times the amount of people etc.

It's when travel kicks off etc is the big challenge.

The first wave has been well contained for weeks.

Did anyone hear any more about this so-called border county cluster? I can't see anything in the figures.

Vastly better systems are now in place to close down clusters compared to early March

But they're celebrating something we achieved weeks back? It's sorting out travel etc we should be thinking about.

We had 0 cases on 28 Feb and we all know how many cases we had by the end of March. We're better prepared through altered lifestyles etc now but we can easily become reinfected.

Watching a football game in Belarus atm. Where the virus is accelerating. Some players are missing for Dynamo Brest with the virus but crowds all crammed in together watching the game.Odd person with a mask. Crazy country

I have better things to be doing with my time than sitting down daily to watch that repetitive BS.

I couldn't care less what the R value is now. We allunderstand the lower the cases the greater the variance of the R value. I'm talking about the dangers of reinfection. Particularly with travel opening up.

    I know.

It works when people are taking precautions.

It’s when a population drops their guard is when sh1t hits the fan.

That’s clear to see in the US in different states.

People can get a false sense of safety when numbers are low and revert back to how they were in February.

I’m hoping people will learn from this.

Those countries that introduced mandatory mask wearing also reacted very early, so we cannot identify which had the significant impact. Plus Denmark were just as successful.

    No they weren't.

The countries that have done the best did these 3 things.

    1. Locked down early and enforced the restrictions.
    2. Closed their borders early.
    3. Mandated for masks early.

Most recent Europe study from Germany

    Face Masks Considerably Reduce
    COVID-19 Cases in Germany

Depending on the region we analyse, we
find that face masks reduced the cumulative number of registered Covid-19 cases between 2.3% and 13% over a period of 10 days after they became compulsory. Assessing the credibility of the various estimates, we conclude that face masks reduce the daily growth rate of reported infections by around 40%.

Like I said the science denial is worrying.

8000 tests conducted in the last 24 hours. As far as I can see, that's the highest number since April.

    Positivity rate of 0.1%.

Look around the world at how prevalent the virus is, only a fool would think we are 20 points up. That leads to complacency and you're back to square 1.

How were Denmark not successful if you dont mind me asking?

They've not seen any significant surge at all, social distance reduced, no masks and everything open weeks now.

That's a job well done at the moment

I don't know how some continue to post on here all day, every day. How can you talk about enjoying small things?

You've wasted days of your life on an internet message board? Maybe weeks. So much time rambling with a few other anonymous people. It's not as if the media isn't already saturated with Covid.

Once a fortnight to pop on is enough. Get out, get some exercise, meet real people.

How about not popping on every two weeks and insulting every single poster?

You come across a bit more unhinged than any of the posters here!
