So teachers have 40 hours contact time from Monday to Friday?
I think you'll find they fall far short of that.

I certainly was never in school from 9-5 Monday to Friday.
    Have things changed?

Rodin, have you considered going into teaching? I think you would be superb. Best of luck with the handy number. Nothing to do before or after lessons in schools of course. Easy peasy. Off you go.

So should they add the preparation of resources, written fortnightly and yearly plans, assessment, report writing, record keeping, parent teacher meetings, meetings, paperwork, etc to overtime then? Or should we just ditch all the legally required paperwork done in all those extra hours? Oh and proper lunch breaks would also be nice thanks! Like all other staff in other jobs.

You think ALL other staff in other jobs have proper protected lunch breaks?

The teacher shortage is well documented

So this plenty of space doesn't refer to geographical space which we are told there is a dearth of?

I invited him earlier, but he is happy doing what he doing so like you know read into that, its too hard. Instead he is here to moan and derail thread by giving out.

    Maybe I will.

The annual leave alone is stellar.

So a lunch break is legally required. If you're not taking yours then why don't you contact your union or look into another line of work? Teachers are expected to supervise children on theirs so including all the additional after hours work they do that nobody knows anything about who is not a teacher, they don't get the break they are entitled to or deserve. Jsut s little reminder too that sitting at your desk eating lunch is still a break if you choose to do that. Sitting supervising 30 children is not.

I'm here to urge a ''can do'' attitude rather than a ''can't do'' one.

So many sectors have already moved heaven and earth to sort their house out.
Why are we still hearing about schools potentially not opening two months from now?

For God's sake give it over! Apologies mods for the back seat modding but seriously Rodin, go make a "teachers are lazy and I hate them" thread in After Hours or something. You're making discussion impossible with your nitpicking and off topic ramblings. This thread is about opening schools.

I am missing those threads as there hasnt been one in a week or so.

I would love for you to become a teacher just for the experience alone. The annual leave is great but just see what all the rest of the conditions are like and let's hope that you see what conditions for covid 19 are like on your teaching practice. By the way all your teaching practice will be unpaid. Enjoy:)

Your issue is with the Department of Education not committing the necessary resources to makethis possible. Not with teachers.

    I'm happy to discuss.

I already said I'd make face masks compulsory.
This would obviate the need for two metres distancing.

Many schools don't even have 30 pupils in their entirety never mind in one class.

Also just wondering when you're doing your 16 weeks unpaid teaching practice can I check all your notes and assessment. I'm sure you will get it all done every day in the hour or two which will make it 40 hours a week. Never seen a teacher manage it in that short a time frame but you're special and so hardworking clearly.

Well done if you read the thread that has been mentioned many times by teachers

Are you living under a rock? There are lots of classes with up to 34 pupils? You might want to learn a little more about the job with such stellar leave.

The Dept has not stepped up

    It is in the thread

    And many classes/schools which don't.

Each school needs to make their own unique provision without hiding behind the Dept. of Ed.

The language and attitude needs to be much more positive than it has been up to now.

    So compulsory masks? Done.
2 metres down to one metre? Done.

The savings from heating and lighting from the schools not being open for 3 months can pay for hand sanitiser. Compulsory on entering and leaving a classroom.

Pretty sure Tony Holahan said it does not stop the need for the distancing. It just compensates slightly for it as there is no way to cut hair from 2m. So they use every othersafery measure possible. Schools however seem to be using none of the safety measures advised.

Tell the Department that. I'm happy enough personally with no social distancing if we can have hand washing facilities/sanitizer and PPE, robust guidelines for dealing with symptomatic staff and students and clear provision for vulnerable staff and students. They're currently talking about 1m rather than 2m according to the guidelines.

Lots will have half weeks then to accommodate the distancing.

Schools cannot do their own thing. Staffing/funding etc all ultimately come from the Department.

Most schools don't have heating after Easter anyway (some turn it off in early March)

    What PPE do you want?
    For pupils or teachers?

Funding comes from the dept but the school decides how it's spent.
Must have saved a fortune on electricity in past three months. Am I wrong?

Haven't done that since Man of Steel.

    Or lengthen the school day/year.

Or is that a deal breaker?

I'd love face shields instead of masks as masks are more difficult to speak through but my understanding is they are not as effective (just a personal comfort point of view). I'll defer to public health advice though re what PPE is necessary if not engaging in social distancing.

Well the problem with that, it will cost money and the Dept have already said money not there. Or are we working for free like everyone else who stepped up during crisis? Asking for a friend who wants to teach but is scared to.
