Cases going up again, had hoped they’d stay in single digits and the 24 the other day was just a once off.

What I don't get about the our being open to US tourists, is that the US remains completely closed to Irish tourists and visitors, with very limited exceptions.

Why did we not make that reciprocal?

Are we afraid of American reactions or something? It's bizarre.

I mean here we are with the lowest COVID-19 growth rate in Europe. We've put huge effort into getting here. We've cost ourselves billions upon billions, and prevented loss of further billions by so doing, yet we've tourists from potentially highly infectious parts of the US, and who could well have quite bonkers attitudes to seeing this as entirely political, just wandering around in Killarney or wherever.

What's the point of what we just did for the last few months if we can't keep the place safe. It just makes absolutely no sense to me.

Being open to countries with similar / lower levels of risk seems pragmatic, but being open to places that have not only had very high levels of transmission, but have horrendous lack of direction and political issues around the topic seems just insane.

We should be following the Schengen area guidelines at the very least.

The R0 increases as the cases decrease?

    How does that work?

Prof. Nolan confirms testing in nursing homes and residential care restarted last week.

    Harder to estimate

15 cases is not a cause for concern

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,767 ✭✭✭✭ACitizenErased

Testing positivity rate now 0.3% for the last week with increased testing numbers

Not an issue. As it gets into small numbers its harder to estimate and you can only work off the known clusters.
Was flagged weeks ago in Switzerland for example.

Alot harder to estimate. If your dealing with small clusters R is going to rise. If 1 person tests postive and has 3 contacts but only 1 is positive then your R is 1. Very difficult to be accurate now.

On the quarantine thing: implement it properly.

If you're coming in from a high risk country:

    1) Warning not to come unless necessary.

    2) If you do come - supervised quarantine

and / or (if it's technically a safe option)

    3) Testing (at your own expense e.g. maybe €80 to €100 seems reasonable to me)
I don't think we should be picking up the tab for people making unnecessary trips in the middle of a pandemic.

If we don't start growing a backbone and actually dealing with these risks, we are risking costing ourselves huge economic and social damage for absolute no reason other than placating some vested interests or being afraid to seem 'unwelcoming' for a few months.

R-number could be as low as 0.6 and as high as 1 based on large clusters in the last week

    5 more deaths RIP

    15 additional cases

    This also;

Validation of data at the HPSC has resulted in the denotification of 5 deaths.

Validation of data at the HPSC has resulted in the denotification of 3 confirmed cases.
