So, a non-scientific, non-representative poll. Not the best for setting policy...

NPC & INTO on RTE radio now...

    Am listening!

    Do a poll here

Just listened and the biggest issue seems to be social distancing. Surely wearing face covering in class would solve this. Not mentioned or suggested once and yet an ad promoting face covers in the break

I am a qualified primary school teacher since 2001, and have been on BOM and held an AP1 position, I doubt you know what that is, pm me and I will give you a screen grab of my TC registration. I set up an ed tech company providing workshops and support employing 4 staff in 2010 when things were very tough in the country and worked hard to build it. I was about to take on more staff until March. I paid staff until I could, they're gone and the company has entered voluntary strike off. I now have a case taken against me by the landlord of unit we had for breaking the lease.

Go through my post history, I don't mention it here but did speak about it back in March/April when I realised what was about to happen.

I will be returning to subbing in Sept hopefully as I am trying to get back on my feet.

You sound like you really have your finger on the pulse.

More so than you it seems when it comes to an actual real classroom!!!

Our local school is currently in a panic to get hot water installed before September, that’s the Reality in rural schools , all desks will need to be replaced as currently using desks that sit four kids so they need to be changed .. some of our class rooms are only accessible through other class rooms , our class room used for extra learning is no bigger than a large wardrobe.
    .

It's not just rural schools I can assure you!

seems in secondary schools that the easiest plan would be to add in an extra class in most years. o instead of 4 first year classes make it 5 , instead of 28 per class drop it to 18.this is what it should be for class sizes anyway. now the thing is the department will have to come up and start offereing schools more hours to recruit more teachers to cover extra classes in the timetable. now the problem is , are thise teachers available or are they on the ground?

    What were people saying?

Representatives from 3 unions basically answering questions from the TDS re the reopening of schools. Available on RTE site on FB to watch.

Reps made the point that investment in extra teachers, training for teachers adn students necessary. Also that accomadations should be made for next years leaving cert. Infrastructure needs sorting along with hardware and software.
Talked about social distancing and difficulties it wa sover an hour long nearly hour and half. NPC were there at the beginning.

I missed the first half of it but thought that the unions presented the practical difficulties faced by schools very well.

Well I certainly agree investment in those things are required (were needed anyway by the sounds of it in a lot of places!) the worry is they hold them to ransom over it. Have the Govt or Dep actually pledged any money to education to help the transition back to schools?

Nothing concrete. That's part of the worry.

Kieran Christe and McGabhann were on Drive time. Christe reiterated his stance that classrooms would be empty in Sept given the current guidance and public health advice. He was then asked were teachers just looking for extra money. People totally missing the point of our concerns.

Anyone that is a member of a union with Christie as its head should be ashamed. He’s making an embarrassment of teachers and this country. It’s clear what’s going on here Pathetic. Luckily my kids are in primary and creche so I don’t have to deal with.

Ya I think lots of people misunderstand that when money is mentioned. Calls for money to be allocated to education are not calls for teachers to be bought off but calls for ppe/ extra staff/ adapting buildings etc.

What is pathetic about ensuring safe schools for staff and students? Now I didn't hear the Drivetime interview and am not a member of ASTI so I'm not really sure what you're alluding to?

I assume if it is remote learning in September teachers will be providing on line tuition from their classrooms not their kitchen ?

He’s not qualifies to interpret public health guidance. He’s just a teacher and a union rep. He’s looking for money for the teachers. Really low thing to do holding kids to ransom for a PT rise. Teachers have been sitting at home the last few months doing very little.

I don't know. I don't think remote learning is being proposed seriously. Blended learning with a mix of in and out of school time for students is being discussed but I don't think remote learning by itself is being considered. I certainly hope not. No clarification on what blended learning would look like but I suspect we would be in school unless maybe vulnerable staff/underlying health conditions etc might work from home? Pure speculation on my part. No clear guidance issued one way or the other.

What money for teachers is he looking for? This is the first I've heard of it. Seems a strange move. Are u sure u haven't misunderstood him? I heard him speaking in Oireachtas Committee today and he was looking for funding for schools to make them safer not for teachers themselves.

    Edit:posted too soon

He is qualified to look out for his members interests including health and safety. Also why teacher bash? Very unfair. I worked much longer hours remote teaching than I would have if I were in school.

Where did he mention money for teachers? Point totally over that head of yours.

Just reopen the schools fully and stop the absolute car crash ideas...provide adequate testing and tracing, protect vulnerable students and teachers and let’s try & repair the damage of the last 6 months.
P.s. Children are actively mixing currently at playdates, parties and playgrounds

You’re a primary school teacher? You want an extended holiday or more money? Or both? It’s great teachers are all of a sudden public health experts

How you suggest vulnerable students and teachers be protected? Schools cannot be reopened without planning. I feel and hope they will reopen, but for that to happen discussion and problem solving have to happen. All these debates online/in the media/in the Dail are part of the process.

Good to see you have the ability to construct an original thought. Was it Ivan Yates or that idiot Ciara Kelly or perhaps both that told you we were on holidays and/or want more money?

I just want to be able to get back to my classroom in a safe way. Don't think that is too much to ask for from an employer. Do you think it is unreasonable? If you do, why is it?
