Germany R rate at 2.88, we need to monitor this as they are a few weeks ahead of us in moving out of lockdown.

This is the advantage we have, we can learn from others.
Germany did a full opening of the pubs and might of backfire now with the football.

    **** that's high.

This, and the WHO figures, with them announcing the greatest daily increase in the number of cases, are indeed worrying.

Most of the new cases are in the U.S. and Brazil, at least, where the government response in both cases is... well, let's just say "not rooted in evidence or science."

    Might backfire?

Have a bit of confidence - Germany have by miles biggest capacity in hospitals and ICU in entire Europe. They took patients in from Italy during March and April (when as you can appreciate they had their own cases to deal with). Some of our covid tests are checked out in Germany too...

PS If Germany handle their 2.88 R number well and all the new cases well - will you be more comfortable Ireland having such R number? If not - why are we monitoring this? Looking for a reason to go into 2nd lockdown?

Read on the main Covid-19 thread that increase is linked to spike in cases in meat factories and a religious gathering so not in the general public.

The classic meat plants huh. Well if our country had no one die from meat plants infections, we can safely say Germans will be alright.

Mmmmm but but the R number

People who attend religious gatherings don't live in isolation outside of mass, they are the public.

“The proposed measures would cost around €1.8 billion in a full year,” the report said. “However, the costs of not providing adequate support and allowing thousands of businesses die, would far outweigh those costs.

“It is conceivable that, without adequate support during this 24-month period, up to 100,000 jobs could be lost in the sector. Such an outcome would impose a very significant cost on the exchequer, which could be as high as €2.8 billion [a year].”

    Dreadful. Absolutely dreadful.

Where in the name of god to the restaurateurs think they are going to get €1.8b? People are forgetting the problems this country had before COVID!

Read the full information that come from RKI and not just the headline. Germans having particular issues with meat plants.

"A further 687 new cases were noted in the country yesterday by the Robert Koch Institute, but 549 of these came from the North Rhine-Westphalia region of the country"

“In light of the still low daily case numbers, both R-values should be interpreted with caution and in their course over several days,” the Robert Koch Institute said.

It said the sharp rise in recent days is “mainly related to local outbreaks” and singled out “the outbreak in North Rhine-Westphalia playing a particularly important role in this context”.

That specific outbreak in that area has centred on workers in an abbatoir with hundreds of workers at the plant testing positive. One of Germany’s biggest meat processers Toennies has shut its plant following the outbreak.

The Robert Koch Institute said: “Since case numbers in Germany are generally low, these local outbreaks have a relatively strong influence on the value of the reproduction number.

“Further developments need to be monitored closely during the upcoming days, especially in regard to whether case numbers are increasing outside of outbreak contexts.”

We need to monitor it so we don't make the same mistakes and we can continue to move forward. Also we need to monitor it as our hospitals can't handle a high R rate, that' s a pretty good reason also

I know you're kinda in jest, but on a serious note, I've actually been appointed one of a few ushers in my local church and apparently once the 50 have been allowed inside, we could literally be turning people away. It's bizarre stuff, bearing in mind some of the shows I've seen in Dunnes, Penney's etc....

They are generally low but they still quarantine a section in Germany over the fear it could spread more.

As I said we need to monitor everything, we are entering tourism season at the end of next week, some would say already give then number of yellow reg campers here.

Campsites are fully booked out, including ourselves heading to one next week

It seems Czech republic is 2 - 3 months ahead of us, we need to monitor them closely too!

"Swimming pools, zoos, castles, monuments and museums in most of the Czech Republic are now returning to the operation that was common before the coronavirus pandemic. People can visit them without restrictions, the current limit on the number of visitors as well as mandatory distances from does not apply as of June 22.

A maximum of 1,000 people can attend religious services and weddings. The same restrictions apply to sports training and matches.

Another wave of relaxation of restrictions is expected from July 1, when people will be able to put away their face coverings indoors or on public transport, and a night ban on restaurants and pubs will be lifted. Prague may be left out of this wave, though.

    https://news.expats.cz/coronavirus-in-the-czech-republic/more-coronavirus-restrictions-eased-but-not-for-the-entire-czech-republic/

PS 1 July onwards it seems like masks wont be mandatory in EU.

This is embarrassing from Ireland's point of view. Our clowns are launching campaigns to wear masks, in JUNE :rolleyes::rolleyes:

Well obviously yes but the point being the cases were linked to that and quickly identified so there was no major risk of it spreading in the general public.

The point is if the R rate had increased through community transmission and they couldn’t link the increase in cases to a small number of clusters it would be far more worrying.

All modern economies will be at 1 metre or 1.5 metre. It will just take our government couple of extra months to monitor this and get comfortable with following rest of developed world.

You talking about Czech Republic masks wearing rules?

    They've been mandatory not advisory.

"The rule was imposed by prime minister Andrej Babiš’ government after Prague city council initially introduced it for travelling on the capital’s public transport network.

Masks are still mandatory on public transport and in indoor facilities where people cannot guarantee standing a minimum of 2 metres apart."

According to this Guardian article anyways, from 25th of May.

Czech are coming from a better starting point than us. Considering we are opening things up at the start of July, we are moving quickly.

Campsites in Czech will have restrictions on their campsites, the same as France, Spain, Italy. Neighbour is from Czech and recommendation is he doesn't fly out home yet.

The biggest question is - when will we reduce that 2 metre rule without any 9 euro burger purchases requirements.

I just dont get that at all. How are we moving quickly? Is it in comparison to some other nations or just your personal preference?

Because as is, we are the slowest. and us picking up pace doesnt mean we move quickly, it means we try to save some face not to be slowest nation in EU to lift restrictions.

    A bit harsh.

also, will we pass that in bold onto anyone who lost their job and will lose their job this year? I didnt know that 15% long term unemployment is doing well. But I suppose each to their own.

I just watched Frode Forland, Specialist Director of Infectious Diseases and Global Health at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, re-iterate to the BBC that 200,000 people would need to wear masks for a whole week in order to prevent 1 new case of Coronavirus. And people wonder why the vast majority of people here don't wear masks.

If Germany's R level goes up - is that now the only measure of success in society? Does it count for more than cancer screenings and other health issues, mental health services, livelihoods, education? When are people going to start looking at this virus with a bit of balance - yes it is bad for older/vulnerable people but it is not the only threat to them or to society.
