McDonalds took the decision to close themselves.

But are each McDonalds not owned separately. Were they obligated to close by Head Office. I know it’s irrelevant but it was wrecking my head that Burger King in Dún Laoghaire was open but 20 metres down the road McDonalds was shut. Would have made a fortune during lockdown. Look at the queues for the drive through when it reopened.

They run a franchise system, so the holding company would have some power over each business.

You are right. it was a decision by head office as everyone had closed. If it was a personal choice then there would be some open. I would be interested in knowing why they would when Burger King didn’t.

Just edited the start as it looked like I was being argumentative.

We've seen an amazing response by the public to the appeals to social distance - there's been a few gobdaws throughout this who think they are above it all, but in general people have stepped up. On the one hand most people know they could be affected by the virus personally, but in general most people have done what they did because of concern for other people in their community and families. It's been great to see.

And yes it has revealed a lot about people. It has caused me to have a think about certain business relationships where the people involved have been loudly critical of measures to control spread, and on the other hand will cause me to give more custom to some others. We found out who stepped up for our communities when the chips were down.

It's not over yet of course. Some people folded after a week or two, but most are still doing their bit to keep a bit of distance.

I always find people who take a judgmental and self righteous approach to others very interesting. Calling people "gobdaws" because they won't fall into line and then preaching about all the great family and community values apparently in evidence. Reminiscent of religious preachers. Who aren't always such good people themselves when the chips are down.

People reacted as they reacted. People reacted to the pandemic and people reacted to people's reactions to the pandemic. All quite fascinating in what it exposed about human nature. Good and bad.

It’s a franchise, so I’d imagine head office directed them to close..... the question of why isn’t one I can answer.

Amazing what a google search pulls up. Firstly it must have been such a blow to Beef Farmers when they announced that all branches in Ireland and U.K. Biggest purchaser of beef in the country.

It says in the Article that the CEO announced the closures in all Ireland and U.K. because it had become clear that it was not possible to maintain safe social distancing practices in takeaway and drive thru services.

Looking back on how Burger King did it I wonder if they regret it. Whatever about the restaurants surely drive thru was the easiest way to Social Distance.

The propaganda from RTÉ and fear mongering from the government has been so devastating to this country that there are still people going around wearing bloody masks. Can anyone tell me the percentage of people who died compared to the overall population?

You need to look up “prevention paradox”. But your post scores highly on moronic cliché.

This has and will continue to be massively damaging. We do not know the real damage yet of the continued lockdown.

Even the Archbishop of Dublin is calling out the moronic nature of limiting the occupancy in a church which can hold 1500 people to 50 people and the stupidity of only allowing 5000 (from September) at an outdoor gathering without considering capacity.

    Would 50 people turn up?

Have a look at countries like Spain, Italy, Brazil, Iran, Turkey, and even the US. Then tell me about the value of the lockdown. And it’s not as if we were improsoned. Basically a couple of months and things are pretty much opened up or will be within a month. And that’s only a pub. What continued lockdown is there.

Why did you spell the number four but use numerals for the 10.

See all this sh1t. It’s not your fault.

It’s been covered before in the media but another factor is that Burger King is behind the times in terms of their infrastructure and that’s actually been to their benefit during this crisis. McD’s has undertaken a global business change programme to reduce the size of their kitchens, digitize much of their system and redesign restaurants - you may have noticed this if you frequent them in the last few years. As a result, it’s been harder for McD’s to ensure social distancing between staff in their kitchens and they made the decision to close until they could put measures in place. BK with their older style restaurants (wider kitchens and counters etc) didn’t run into this issues as much. But not all of the restaurants were open, either. I know small units in petrol stations etc didn’t stay open.

Because I was saying the number four and the fraction tenths (that better for you), it’s fairly common when writing numbers beside eachother that have differing values (whole number vs fraction) how and ever that’s beside the point.

Someone asked what % of the population died from not wearing a mask and you responded 4/10. Did you mean 4 out of 10 deaths were because someone didn’t wear a mask? or that four 10ths of the population died? And have you got any figures showing this? Or have I misunderstood completely

Yes, sensible people are wearing masks. You protect me and I protect you. its basic common sense in crowded places.

I am smart enough to look at the details rather than the PR. Restrictions remain on normal life.

Can I go for a beer? No
Can I go for a meal? No
Can I go to Church? No
Can I go to the gym? No
Can I go abroad? Yes and No.

1 in a million chance of getting it, it’s practically non existent. The country should have been completely opened up a month ago. Now we are completely screwed for years to come because of the tortoise pace of the government to act reduce the stages.

It really depends on what is 'normal' to you. I get to the pub about once a month and similarly for going for a meal. I never go to church or the gym. I might go abroad once every three or four years. It's pretty normal for me.

Seems to me there are things you could be doing if you try a little harder. Had a conversation with someone yesterday who has a week off and is looking forward to planning some activities.

Why do people keep assuming that if someone is wearing a mask it means they're "afraid"? Masks are primarily to protect other people from a wearer who may be infected but not yet know they're infected. If someone is wearing a mask it means they're not selfish and they're looking out for their community.

If you look at the mask debate in the US, the anti-mask advocates are mostly in the Trump group - and they are terrified of everything.

Masks also seem to make them afraid - it means they have to acknowledge that they are part of a community which they largely look down on, and can't achieve this mythical "freedom" thing they all (think) they yearn for. Like Trump too so many of them are so unsure of their masculinity that they think wearing a mask somehow emasculates them.

I'm not a mask fan, I don't think the science is proven, but I've no problem wearing one as the public health people think they could make a difference. And it has nothing to do with fear, masks are about me protecting others.

You can still buy beer, you can Get a take away meal, You don't need to go to Church to pray and you don't need a Gym to exercise. these are mild restrictions you have pointed out, far from a lockdown

Because it generally looks like people are just protecting themselves. If they may be infected why are they out in the first place?

I find that type of claim to be a cop out TBH. If you can't evaluate immediate risks in your life you shouldn't be outside in locations where you can come in contact with people, mask or no.
