The chances of catching it in Ireland now are higher than they were back at the start of lockdown, by any applicable standard.
But things can't remain locked down forever.

You'll have to explain that one. What did he say? And what or who are Mean Girls?

He quoted Mean Girls, a teenage film from about 15 years ago.

It's a nod to his previous quotes. A smarmy inside man joke while we've just lost 1,700 of our citizens.

And even if you do a total of 18 people below age 45 have died from it here, multiples of that age group would have died in road traffic accidents in the same period, lets close the roads too while we are at it.

49,554 new cases reported in Brazil today. And that's even with limited testing, so the real figure is going to be higher.

    Dreadful.

US record is 39,000 in one day to put in perspective.

    Crazy leadership in Brazil.

Can't say that because we've no idea how widespread it was at the start of the lockdown due to the shambles of our testing (or maybe I'm misreading your intention)

My local lidl put up the glass screens at the very beginning and I often see the staff wear masks.

Also another thing to consider is that a lot of young healthy people who catch covid-19 are asymptomatic, so it is possible that a lot got it without even knowing.

Also if it's anything like here in England all vunerable supermarket workers were put on 12 weeks paid leave so those most likely to get this severe were protected from it. I find it interesting the low numbers of cases in supermarket workers, I appreciate the posts about it, but said posts tend to be a bit too keen to say look how safe it is without taking everything into account. It's a good thing supermarkets were compelled to do things such as queing and social distancing otherwise a LOT of workers were simply have phoned in sick at the height of this, not worth it.

    I can and I did.
Based on the known figures you have more chance of catching it now that in the first few weeks of lockdown.

    What?
There’s no fear. It’s just I’m not naive enough to think we are somehow going to magically keep this virus out of Ireland when tourists and business travellers start coming back in from infected countries and we have fully opened up our “lockdown”
I’m not saying we should keep the lockdown going, far from it. It’s killing the economy but it is inevitable (yes use that gif of agent smith if you want) that the virus numbers will go back up when travellers from different country’s come here. This will then lead to spread within the community.
Anyone who doesn’t understand this, well ....... fine. They just don’t understand it.
So roll your eyes all you want.
Will I put you in the naive bracket?

Some day the scandal of the Brazilians coming here to "study" and work will be exposed.

Scratch that, it would be racist to say this I suppose. It puzzles me though.

Can never understand why they don't go to Portugal though, same lingo, EU country and all that.

    But we love forreners here.

Leo's Mean Girls quote, is beyond pathetic.

The insensitivity. Had Boris or the Donald done something similar, the usual outrage people would be all over it. They seem to apply different standards to our own.

Ah it's no harm. Doesn't have to be all doom and gloom, nothing wrong with a bit of humour

Brazil update is that it has recorded 54,771 new cases in one day. By far the world record so far.

    Crazy.

Point being when hospitals are maxed out with covid victims if you need hospital attention for a different reason you won’t get it as they are maxed out with covid. Also in Italy plenty of cases of under 50’s being effected.

Seems to me we've done so well up to a point, but it would be typical of Irish to throw it all away. Government have caved in to the Pubs and Restuarnats and Barbers. It's full steam ahead in a few days, and lets get real, no one is obeying the 2m rule, yet they are caving in and bring it down to 1m.
The 2m rule is silly. How can streets full of people, which they are of late, possible stay 2m apart. If you were to add up all those people, and all those 2 metres you'd have a very large sq metre area, but it's not, it's a street, long thin ally way of people breathing in what others breathe out.

Apple has announced it is closing it's stores in the US in states experiencing the surges in the virus.

When mega corporations feel it's the only thing to do you know there is a problem.

It's funny when Leo does it because it is so at odds with his otherwise wooden and serious personality. Also unlike Trump he's a good leader, so he can pull off a joke from time to time

Depends on where you are. We were in town today and the vast majority were keeping the 2m - even following the one way pedestrian system in place . When it got tight people stepped aside, or on the the road, to make room.

Are there any direct flights from Brazil to Ireland? Or for that matter any from USA, India, chilie, Mexico or Russia to ireland? All over 4K cases today.

I just find this analysis odd.

Basically Irish leaders can do what they want at the moment because they just get compared to Trump or Boris.

    We're a sad country.

    Afraid it is.

The WHO said today the situation was out of control in Latin America and not just in Brazil

Peru, Chile, Colombia and Argentina are also experiencing a big surge.

Why this is important for Europe is the seasonal aspect. We won't know for sure until late in the Autumn obviously but South Africa and South America getting hit really badly on a scale nowhere else has seen, not even the United States.

Piss poor leadership also playing it's part clearly.
