Remind me again what was actually wrong with the 19,000 people in the last week that went for tests with only 1% having the virus? Do they all have a cold or what?
A lot of tests are being done on patients in hospital prior to surgery, admission and discharge even without symtoms.

Some hospitals are doing them on everyone that comes in to ED.
Each hospital may have adopted different policies.

A friend of mine works in a private hospital and they will be doing covid tests on every patient going forward.

Do you mind me asking where you get these figures from? Not doubting, just interested to be able look at them for my own research

    gov.ie/publications statements from NPHET

Think medical staff are also tested regularly
Only if they're a close contact or have symptoms. Swabbed as soon as they're contacted and then again 7 days later.

Again that may vary between hospitals.

Also they said on the news that they were thinking about making them mandatory for over 60. Weren't masks to protect others, not ourselves? So who got this idea for only over 60 wearing them?

I think its simple. Masks mandatory if social distance gets below 2 metres.

    IMO no it isn`t.

The wearing of masks should be made mandatory on public transport and in enclosed indoor spaces even with the 2 metre limit in place with strict penalties for anyone flouting the regulations.

Surely you'd need to exempt Pubs & Restaurants

Well if that is what you believe then you should have no issue about waiting another week to see if the downward trend continues. I remain to be convinced that this first wave is over just quite yet.

I don't need to wait for anything. The trend in other countries is evidence enough. It's done

Don't worry we won't be facing a second lockdown.

That's the right decision. It's highly unlikely we'll see widespread community transmission but instead clusters related to specific areas/workplaces.

If they are exempted from mask wearing then the 2 metre rule needs to stay in place for them IMO.

Again in your opinion. It`s not fact.

The rule will be relaxed to one meter. Otherwise most pubs/restaurants will not be viable. But even still, how would a mask work in these settings. A person would constantly pulling it down to eat and drink and then back up again

Fascinating video about the pandemic from a Japanese perspective.
Never entered lockdown and Japan has one of the lowest death rates. Why? 90% of their population wore masks.

I would add strict city centre. I felt uncomfortable watching footage from Dublin streets with only few people wearing them.
I think we've become completely desensetised to them. And the bizarre thing is we can look to those countries that properly understand pandemics, and in particular in the Far East. They are commonplace in countries that are far more on top of this than Ireland.

I know that community transmission is currently pretty much under control, but the risk remains that it takes off again, and the best way to avoid that is to reduce the risks, which facemasks clearly do

Does anyone genuinely know, like genuinely 100% know one reason as to why masks aren't compulsory? I'm clueless.

If that is what is needed then so be it. People will just have to learn new habits for these situations if they don`t want a reimposition of restrictions if a resurgence of the virus happens.

Put if somebody is constantly pulling up and down a mask in an enclosed setting it makes them more or less useless and if you're in a bar or restaurant that's what people will be doing

Hay fever judging by the couple of people I know of who tested negative in the last few days

Well then they need to put in protective screens between tables in restaurants and divide pubs the same way. This would obviously cost a lot of money but if these businesses are allowed to reopen they just can`t realistically expect to have all public health measures scrapped for them when other types of businesses have measures in place.

If the function of the mask/face covering is simply to reduce droplet spread rather than to protect the user, I see no harm in pulling it down and up again.

The current recommendations on masks seem to be designed for people in high risk areas like Covid wards in hospitals, where there is a real and present danger of contracting the virus. A clear distinction has to be made between protecting yourself from the virus and protecting others by limiting the spread with a face covering.

As an aside... sneezing into your elbow is not much good for preventing droplet spread, if the weather is fine and you are wearing only a T shirt !

Am I the only person who thinks the Friday statement on reopening was poorly written and it's hard to figure out what they were trying to communicate? All I hear is 'blah blah blah' like the guy is reading a phonebook from A to Z.
Can the normies go and watch Waminator in their local cineplex or is that still forbidden?

Well we are now running at a lower case level than Austria, the poster boys for masks on here

Cinemas, theatres and similar leisure related premises are still closed and will be until 29th June at the earliest.

Its a fair point. I just cant see bar staff or restaurant staff ensuring that people are wearing face coverings except when eating or drinking

So when they do open these 'hot spots' where people keep getting infected - how is that going to work? Are they going to section off seats with plastic partitions or is this distancing thing over then?

South Korea has managed the pandemic well and has avoided a lockdown with phenomenal tracing of contacts, mask wearing, widespread temp checks and a strict quarantine of all arrivals.

Somehow I don't see the same happening here...
