Tony Holohan really let his mask slip with his condemnation of people having house partys. Now I wouldn't be in favour of them myself, but it's a deflection tactic by him to criticise the general public, when it was his department that are wholly at fault for the nursing homes fiasco.

Those in glass houses and all that. And I would hazard a guess that no-one who has been at house party over the weekend will end up contracting the virus anyway as it is more or less dead in the general community.

To say the department was wholly at fault for the nursing homes is a gross misrepresentation. As has been pointed out before, their initial concentration was on stopping a surge that would have ripped through nursing homes anyway. Secondly its clear now the visitor issue was not a factor. The nursing homes themselves have a lot to answer for as has the HSE (which is not the department and not under Holohan's control).

Well no, that’s not it. If there was a bit more confident leadership from the government and not a come day go day, one step forward two pedals back type attitude then maybe they would be ready to open. Yes they have hinted that if the numbers are good that things can be accelerated, but guess what; the numbers ARE good and we are only now entering stage 2 out of 5 stages. One day you have Leo hinting one thing, only for it to be completely demolished and shat on by Tony later on that evening in the press conference. There’s zero consistency and it shows. They themselves don’t know whether they’re coming or going so why would any business owner know?

I know a lot of small business’ are already reopening at a loss so why would they pump more money into measures they don’t even know if or when they will possibly need them? Now they’re told year grand ye can open Monday, after being shut three months and reopening to a completely new world. It’s not good enough. There needs to be more engagement with business’ and not have everything so hush hush and top secret, and then a mad panic rush at the 11th hour to make sure you’re ready. Hopefully other business’ will take note of this and be ready to open with a few hours notice

I said it’s not just a simple case of throwing dates out and shur it’ll be grand

I said many stores although they will be allowed open will not be in a position where they can.

So what's the issue? If they won't be ready for another 3 weeks they're in the same position either way! At least some shops can benefit from the early opening.

I didn’t say there was an issue , you said “you just can’t win” in some attempt to make a point.

I simply said many business won’t be in a position to open up and you said you just can’t win

who is this you! You are referring to?

Also there are other business who need more clarification, for example does a business prepare for the rest of the year with 1m or 2m or 1.5m social distancing.

For most shops etc it’s not a big issue for hairdressers, barbers, cafes etc it’s different.

Should they spend in some cases huge amounts to change to 2m or wait it out and see etc.

Ye now real world issues that can’t really be helped with the shur it’ll be grand approach.

I think Tony knows the game is almost up but he’s too stubborn to budge. He has been reduced to finger wagging about house parties and people having sex.

The government will obviously prefer to have his approval but he is clearly a very pessimistic and stubborn man. Probably doesn’t want more blood on his hands.

He might need to be overruled at this point

Not at all, don’t even like chips.

I think it’s a great announcement, was simply pointing out that still doesn’t mean all these business will be open as per the actual announcement from Penney’s this eve. Personally speaking anything that keeps the wife and kids out of Penney’s for longer is a good thing.

I hope whoever it was who couldn’t win from your post is ok.

But shur it’ll be grand, we will all figure it out as we go along.

He is treating this as an academic exercise and is probably already in his head drafting a paper on how Ireland eliminates covid19 following his guidance. His focus is on his area of expertise without bring all factors in to play. But he is not a clown. Wrong, almost definitely. Some of the smartest people in the world gets things spectacularly wrong all time time.

He said to avoid cherrypicking international advice that supported lifting restrictions and then did the exact same to counter claim his own argument!

The presenter was useless as ever and failed to call him up on the many inaccuracies he quoted.

Excellent news all retail can open Monday. That will put a nice dent in the covid payment numbers which are totally unsustainable. Confident now everything will be open by July 20th.

Taking the spotlight yet he's presided over worsening hospital, bed crisis before this. His tweets are like talking to children. "Well done" "as reward for your compliance you go to the diy shops"

    Thanks buddy!

God that’s an awful lot of work you’ve gone to there this evening to help me digging out all those quotes to show me I need a new catchphrase.

And don’t be thinking you can’t win, you can if you just keep at it. Hang on in there!

Now seeing as this has nothing remotely to do with easing restrictions I think I’ll leave it there to save the mods a job of having to tidy up the thread.

Hopefully, would be a big call to move phase 5 up that much but I hope for businesses sake they do it if the situation allows, let hotels, pubs etc make a go at getting back up and running

It’s actually crazy that they are to announce this tomorrow evening and expect business who have been closed for 3 months to be ready to reopen on Monday. Now don’t get me wrong I’m all for it and it’s great news, but a bit more notice for people would be great and not leave them til last minute to get things in order for reopening. Especially for chain stores that will need to totally rearrange the store to comply with social distancing measures. The whole thing is shambolic.

They've had three months to plan for it.

How, construction is only back 2 and half weeks. The guidelines keep changing and even up to the last few days we've told we might not go phase 2 let alone speed up. I'm amazed how people think opening is as simple as flicking a switch.

Two massive unofficial summer camps have been taking place near me every morning for the past three weeks or more. Stating that playgrounds can reopen on Monday demonstrates just how far behind the public the government is.
