They just don't give a s**t. They go to the whole trouble of making a programme where Des Cahill gets some celebs to chat an choose 3 songs desert island style an then they just play 2 bars of the last song when the announcer cuts in with the news.. If ya can't do the easy things......

probably didnt want to pay the fee for playing the full song

The word "accountability" does not exist at RTE.

"Money will continue to roll in" .? I thought the problem was that the money was NOT rolling in ?

    Just on RTÉ salaries,

I’ve been counting the last 2 days the number of RTÉ News correspondents that have been on the last 2 days (as well as those I’d know from memory), and so far I have 41 correspondents! (I’m sure there are more so the list will no doubt grow).

    Tony Connolly - Europe
    Michael Lihane - Politics
    Seán MAC an tSÍTHIGH
    Pascal Sheehy - Southern
Ingrid Miley - Industry & Employment
    Theresa Manion - West
    Paul Cunningham - Politics
    Sean Whelan - London
    Joe Little - Religion
    George Lee - Science
    Ciaran Mullooly -
    Samantha Librairi
    Vincent Kearney - Northern Ireland
    Tommy Gorman - Belfast
    Emma O’Kelly - Education?
    Brian O’Donovan - Washington/U.S.
    Juliet Gash
    Albha Kineally
    Eleanor Mannion
    Fran McNulty - Agriculture
    Dimitri O’Donnell
    Eamonn Horan
    Conor Kane - Southeast
    Pat McGrath - Western
    Kathy O’Halloran
    Robert Short - Economics
    Sinead Crowley
    Helen Donohue
    Conor Hunt
    Fergal O’Brien
    Sinead Hussey
    Jackie Fox
    Laura Fletcher
    Gail Conway
    Justin Treacy - Sport?
    Philip Bromwell
    Dyane Connor
    John Kilraine
    Coleman O'Sullivan
Joe Stack - Sport (and Kerry lotto)
    Eileen Magnier

Lets say they are on an average salary of €50,000 (which I’d say is a very conservative estimate (surely George Lee is on the big bucks)), that would put the correspondents wage bill at €2.05m (and as mentioned, I’m sure there’s a lot more than the 41 above).

Some of these folks, you might only hear from once a month like Samantha Librairi, Joe Little etc.....

Could a solely commercially funded Broadcaster afford to have such a bloated number of correspondents?

(Anyone please feel free to add to my list if they know of any more that I left out (probably because we only hear from them once a month))

Yes we are agreed on that ....

I wasn't describing only the current situation ..I was referring to the fact that a lot of these type of companies have Directors who live "high on the hog" and do not provide for minor downturns

Why so ? The DAA in particular have had at least 6 years of very rapid expansion.

Agreed on the pot of gold bit..I know that in the overall scheme of things the stars salaries are a small percentage ...but what boils most peoples p1ss is that someone in RTE agreed these contracts and paying these ridiculous salaries while looking for more taxpayer money is just a no no.

Would be against ANY increase in subvention to RTE until a proper independent review is carried out.

Sorry I assumed you were talking about the current C19 crisis. Agree provision should be made for minor downturns.

I just thought that seeing we were discussing the RTE situation that the problems of CIE and DAA were a separate issue.

I know a lot of people get excited about "stars" salaries.

I think the middle of a crisis is a bad time to be leaving Public Broadcasting short of resources and would prefer to wait until the Broadcasting Commission reports.

RTE certainly doesn't exist to inform.

Rte already have multiple people employed in donegal/galway/kerry working for RnaG/TG4 - at least these are meeting the PS remit - reporrtng on local news, promoting the Irish language etc. Why then can they not double up as the west/nw/sw correspondents? Its not like they cant speak English and are reporting on the same stuff anyway...

RTE certainly doesn't exist to inform.
Maybe they do .... to mis-inform the people of this country.
Or only provide one-sided liberal-left skewed information, which is suited to a small minority.

Lotta sweeping generalisations in previous posts .....RTE do good public service broadcasting ..Elections / Weather Events / Coronavirus / Major international events etc.

To say otherwise is rubbish...and the listnership figures would appear to back this up.

If a privately funded media outfit wants to pay it's presenters massive wedges...that is their business....more luck to all concerned !

But for a partially State funded media outfit like RTE to pay huge salaries to a large coterie of people who are at best competent in what they do ...and then come looking for more funding from the hard pressed tax payer is just not on !

I am very surprised that they even get a hearing without having to put their house in order first....I really am.

Do you really need Tommy just for Belfast and Vincent for the rest of NI - i mean how much news actually happens outside Belfast

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 640 ✭✭✭da_miser

Why do they need several news readers for the 6:01 news, just need one to read whats on the teleprompter, dont need some one else to tell us the weather either, just a 30 second brief forecast from the news reader will do, you would think Ireland was a large as Russia the way they go on, nearly a county by county forecast, Ireland is a small country, watching USA TV if they reported the weather in the same detail as RTE it would take 30 minutes just to do Texas never mind the entire country

Lotta sweeping generalisations in previous posts .....RTE do good public service broadcasting ..Elections / Weather Events / Coronavirus / Major international events etc.

To say otherwise is rubbish...and the listnership figures would appear to back this up.

Elections: same old tired talking heads and political has-beens. Mary O'Rourke must have been living there during the election.
RTE news pushes Government policy and press releases without critical analysis.

Weather Events: getting a reporter to stand in wellies in a flood is hardly ground-breaking, and is done more for entertainment value. Local radio, social media etc are just as effective for sharing relevant real time information.

Coronavirus: Government mouthpiece. Proper critical debate silenced. UK and USA constantly demonised. No criticism of the WHO allowed.

Major international events? Seriously? This is where RTE is weakest. Usually just recycles footage from other sources and often ignore stories until other networks are covering them.

It is no longer 1963, and we are spoiled for choice for other media sources. We should no longer depend on RTE the way we once did.

Yes, whatever suits RTEs agenda is what they will transmit, for instance, the continuous anti trump rhetoric, only interview anti trump people, democrats etc, make sure not to interview anyone who has anything positive to say about trump and dare not speak anything true if it's positive about trump.

Brainwashing, say it often enough and People will believe it.

RTE will go along with what's popular opinion whether it's right or wrong.

As I pointed out in a previous post, when the footballers were found not Guilty of Rape, RTE's Prime time had Feminists on telling everyone it was a bad day for Women, an absolute disgrace because anyone with half a brain would know if following the case that there was shameful behaviour by both parties, but no one to point this out was interviewed, shocking organisation RTE have become.

    Juliet Gash!

Juliet Gash was recently enough on Today fm.
Niamh Lyons was on the Times Ireland until they folded.
Mary Regan from some newspaper recently enough (also married to Paul O'Flynn - RTE news presenter and associate lecturer in DCU:eek:)

Why were all these hired when RTE were looking for redundancies not so long ago.
Why are they paying out (no doubt) generous redundancy packages then starting the problem again with new recruits?

RTE seems to be the holy grail of where journalists want to work even though it runs at a constant loss. Unfortunately its because they know the taxpayer will always pony up more funds with little questioning.

RTE is going nowhere, don't get your hopes up, its a inoperable tumor dug in to deep to be removed, they know where the bodies are buried

What are your other sources for news about Ireland?

Doesn't seem to be much out there TV wise (Sky News?).
Newspapers are having a hard time of it. Most of the newspaper sites are pay-walled and have their own "biases" and concentrations of ownership of course. Radio might be a bit better (?).

So that leaves the wonderful web...
I suppose I can see the attraction of an RTE free media landscape in Ireland now. Should be heaven for the likes of anti vaxxers, conspiracy theory "experts" and the assorted fruits and nuts from the extreme right and left ends of the political spectrum that agitate regularly on here for their favourite poison.

I'd say we'd end up circling the same drain as the US very quickly.

Here is the truth , you are insignificant, you cannot alter the course of the nation, the powers that be care not what you think, they have their plans and will carry them out regardless of what you think.
Pay no attention to the news. its going to happen one way or another, nothing you can do about it.
You should take notice of what is happening in your local news/area. Get involved in local issues, here you can make a difference, on a nationwide, EU and world wide level, you are a nobody, money talks are you do not have it.
Accept it and make your local community better , the big picture is out of your control, so don't get worked up about it

That little life lesson/word to the wise does not seem to follow from that post:confused:...did I annoy you at some point in the past?

Was it the implied criticism of the US "infotainment" type media that riled you given how you tried to spell tumour?

What are the benefits as you see it of excising the "tumor" of RTE?

No offence was intended, was not a personal attack.
Between auto correct and a dodgy keyboard typing is not in the queens English.
A few years ago IMF came into Ireland, i got a phone call from Brother on continent,1 hour ahead of Ireland, "main story on the news, what is going on?" well i dont know brother, i'll get the 6:01 news and phone you back.
Roll on the 6:01 news and not a word about the IMF, switch to Sky News and it is top story, i learned that day that RTE is nothing more than a propaganda arm of the Irish government.
The powers that be tell us RT news is Russian propaganda
Why should any other new organisation like the BBC be any different?
So i now care not for the news fed to me by the government, i just concern myself with local news i can verify.
