They asked for clarification nearly 2 months ago, basically should they be wearing masks or not, and if not, why not.

I guess they finally got their answer.

Very surprised they got mask's now as the big supply is not due for 1-2 weeks, stock is very low. Maybe they were given them as a H&S measure due to increasing trend of coughing / spit attacking? Maybe they should be wearing googles.

Anyone know what grade mask the Garda were issued?

Are you a hamster? If so, looks like you're sorted.

Wearing a mask can significantly reduce coronavirus transmission, study on hamsters claims
    Published Tue, May 19 2020

The study was released Sunday by the department of microbiology at The University of Hong Kong.
Local media reports stated it will be published in the Clinical Infectious Diseases medical journal, suggesting it is yet to be peer reviewed.

    Thomas Tolstrup

As the debate over the effectiveness of wearing masks during a pandemic continues, a new study gives weight to arguments by medical professionals and government leaders that wearing a mask does indeed reduce virus transmission — and dramatically so.

Experiments by a team in Hong Kong found that the coronavirus’ transmission rate via respiratory droplets or airborne particles dropped by as much as 75% when surgical masks were used.

“The findings implied to the world and the public is that the effectiveness of mask-wearing against the coronavirus pandemic is huge,” Dr. Yuen Kwok-yung, a leading microbiologist from Hong Kong University who helped discover the SARS virus in 2003, said Sunday.

Where are most people sourcing their FFP2 / FFP3 grade masks and filters ?

I got some from Hong Kong a few weeks ago but now looking to reload.

How many of you are wearing full or half faced respirators.?

What is you experience with mask uptake in your area? My eyes 1/15 at Tesco Westport. I have a feeling they won’t take off unless respected individuals in government lead the way.

Good point. Politicians could give guidance by wearing them.

I have a few boxes of 20 JSP ffp2 non valve respirator masks sourced from the UK in February for a (now cancelled) trip to Asia.

They are the JSP Olympus 121 model in original green box.

I have given some to the local surgery. If they are of use to anyone, I am happy to sell on at cost at 55 euro a box (2.75 euro each mask). I paid for UK delivery then courier to Ireland.

I am in South County Dublin. Please pm me.

    No: I don't care enough
Jesus do you or anyone you know have the virus? I don't.

Would you rather be in the UK?

Leave your own political prejudice in your head and acknowledge a job well done.
The CMO has been dealing with politically motivated idiots (as most politicians are).

Move to a country with one of the differing CMO's if you're that convinced and see how you get on.

Norway, Germany, Finland, Czechia, Slovakia, Greece, Switzerland, Portugal, Denmark all managed better than Ireland in death per capita.

Sweden and Netherlands are just about as Ireland with almost no lockdown!

Ireland being an island on the periphery with low population density didn't manage it well. Poor death rate, long restrictive lockdown with huge bill and huge unemployment. Read it again hundred times.

And the reason is of course - no masks. The gov couldn't enact other measures which were part of the success in some of the countries listed above.

Totally anecdotally but it seems that people are relaxing a lot more. Lots more people out and about. The tension in the queue to the supermarkets doesn't seem to be there anymore. It looks like people think we're on the way out of this. And this attitude means I can't see them wearing masks if they haven't up until this point.

To be honest, unless the government make it mandatory I don't expect to see a big upswing in mask wearing

Yup, the time to recommend them was weeks ago when the mood music was all "OMG we're going to end up like Italy!!!".

    Thoughts on these? https://www.inishpharmacy.com/p/biobase-3-ply-disposable-face-masks-bulk-box-50-pack/biobase-50

A box of 50 for 100 euros. I was going to get them for the parents

But do they really offer anything more than the box of 50 for 45 euros in Aldi (or is it Lidl) ?

Masks to be mandatory in Spain starting tomorrow for over 16s, people who can't wear them don't have to.

If you prefer buying from a pharmacy you also have a box of 50 for 45 euros here which seems like a more reasonable price: https://www.pharmacy.ie/product/face-masks/

I don't know what exact type of masks they have at Aldi, but I wouldn't make any assumption the because it is more expensive from a particular shop it is better. The market for masks just is all over the place as the moment so prices are not necessarily an indication of quality.

I don't understand people wearing gloves and not masks, especially after the advice to wear masks.

The main way of transmission is through respiratory droplets. How will gloves protect people?

Logically it makes no sense and if anything gloves make things worse. They just provide another surface for virus to stick to (more easily than it sticks to skin in fact) and you end up contaminating your hands when you take them off anyway so might as well just stick with sanitizer/soap and water. I'm pretty sure it boils down to cultural issues. As a people we're quite comfortable wearings things on our hands without feeling self conscious but not so comfortable wearing things on our face. (I know plenty of people who walk around half-blind because they're too vain to wear glasses for instance).

Because people are idiots..They think that the gloves will protect their hands..which they will.

But your hands don't need protecting.Your skin is well capable of stopping the virus entering your body.

It's when you touch your face with your hands(gloved or not)that is the problem.

I laughed at the 6 one news a few weeks ago.
Two workers in a nursing home all suited up masks/gloves/visor/hazmat suit the works.

Talking to the reporter and one of them puts their gloved hand under the visor and under the mask to scratch their nose.

Clueless idiots is being kind to some people.

I understand that people want to make all the excuses for wearing gloves and that's ok... I just don't get why they don't wear masks.

Other countries making mask wearing mandatory... Can somebody please explain how Ireland is different with this virus?

Just saw a bus pass by and no one with a mask on it. How will distancing help if somebody sneezes on a bus?

Some of the stuff here is Comedy Gold.
This contribution is almost as good as hamsters wearing facemasks or a Risk Averse person standing in a pretty big queue at the ATM.

Which of our highly respected politicians would you think people will unquestioningly copy?

This thread has already been bombed with glove talk enough, maybe those interested in talking gloves should do so in PPE thread or start a gloves thread!

So I went out today for some essentials. We seem to be back to where we were in early March. My valve based FPP3 respirator seems to be doing the trick by keeping people away from me. Happy enough with that tbh.

I was just saying something that I noticed. Still more glove wearing than masks.

99% of commuters 'ignoring advice' on face masks according to transport workers

Add to the fact large swathes of people are now acting like there is no pandemic, it will be a fúcking miracle if this thing doesn't flair up again in the next 6 weeks.

    :(

Another flair up (which is inevitable) and I can’t see how they won’t become mandatory. MARK THESE WORDS!

    It's not a surprise when masks/coverings aren't mandatory.

It's not a surprise when the Media so one sidedly supported the negative stance towards the general public wearing masks by the HSE, State, Minister's, politicans, and doctors during the first 8 weeks of the pandemic.

Mask up take is not failing because it is not mandatory, it is failing because of the reason outlined above.

If the union has campaigned for face coverings to be mandatory on public transport to "ensure maximum protection of frontline staff" then the public's behaviour could be the reason for face coverings to become mandatory, the blame will also be transfered to the GP and that's the way the spin game is played.
