The numbers of people who got it and took it on the chin without getting referred must be huge

Thousands more jobs at risk at the Airport. All these job losses piling pressure on our welfare system. Also our health service though medical cards. The negative spin offs are immeasurable from this

Looks like close contact definition has potentially changed for contact tracing then if a confirmed case has been working with others? If I understood that correctly. Guess it's unavoidable for staff to be that close together in certain circumstances.

I was referred and test got cancelled. Months ago now, was fine before I would have gotten a test at that stage anyway.

People just aren't contracting it in day to day settings any more.

Yes, Dr Tony just said that virtually all new cases are in care settings yet people on here still believe it is contracted in the park or in the supermarket.

Wouldn't blame people for having a cautious approach tbh. Still lot of emphasis on social distancing, wearing masks, hand hygine, cough etiquette so risk may be lower but not zero and still need to keep up the measures.

    We are.

No guarantee there will ever be a vaccine. Could well be a case of us achieveing herd immunity quicker while stlll havig lockdowns.

People's patience and tolerance will decide the future ultimately.

No evidence any such thing as herd immunity. From the now discredited Vallance in UK.

Still 16 is much lower than what we were getting 30-40 at one stage etc, not to mention only 51 cases today. I suspect there will be less than 16 deaths tomorrow. It’s going.....

    The first wave is going.

When travel levels increase and winter arrives, there will almost certainly be a second. We must get ready for that. The severity depends on many factors, not least protection measures in place in the UK, which as we have seen, are making a balls of things.

Any narrative that "its going" is just the wrong message, we need to hold the line tight.

Which is great I know people who think they got it took paracetamol for a few days stayed in isolated without calling a doctor I think the amount of people who done that was huge

Think they are talking about people being able to book a test in a test centre rather than self testing

Apparently that (self booking) will happen in the next few weeks

Or we might just be after controlling it efficiently?

When the case criteria was loosened over 2 months ago, 40,000 were referred for tests by their GP in 2 days and the tests got cancelled.
This all led to the backlogs etc.

Then we only tested Healthcare workers and vulnerable for close to 2 months.

Now we have loosened the criteria completely and no one is going forward for a test (those that do test negative)

It's as clear as days that thousands and thousands of infections were missed in the early days.

The new app is a lot less buggy than the previous versions, at least.

    Which app is this?

So we’ve capacity (confirmed?) to test 100,000 a week and last week just under 37,000 were completed. Time to massively ramp up

It's coming. We should hear about it fairly soon.

My wife just came back from the shops saying social distancing looks like a thing of the past to most people. She wasn't very comfortable and abandoned shopping.

I work in a shop and social distancing has gone completely out the window in the last two to three weeks. Literally nobody does it where I am, staff or customers. They might stand apart in queues, but that's it. I'm not exaggerating.

I honestly don't know where Tony Holohan does his shopping, but what he describes bears no resemblance to what I see everyday all around me.

So I can only roll my eyes at the naivete of people who think we'll be able to social distance our way out of this and lockdowns are a waste of time. They're awfully innocent.

They really do like to stir it up and look for controversy.

Right and if this was a massive deal case numbers would be skyrocketing? But they aren't.

I think the communication at the start wasn't the best. Should have been told to contact GP anyway either way and let GP decide if they needed test. Guess testing system couldn't handle it then so everyone had to self-isolate either way.

If there's only 50 odd new cases today, would it not make more sense to keep the lockdown for about month or two as is. Then completely eliminate it and test everyone coming in and out of the country?

    There's no demand.

Then you create demand which potentially allows us to speed up the opening of things. If there’s 60,000 spare tests. Get workers in certain industries tested or whatever tested and see if we can open a few more things in a more timely manner. There goal is to supposedly test half the country by Christmas all those people won’t be sick or showing symptoms. Their goal was obviously to test asymptomatic at some stage. Test those entering the country

A lot of people on here seem to think that no demand = people avoiding being tested. I disagree strongly. There's no demand because people aren't sick.

No, there's now capacity for 100,000 if required. That's not spare tests. It's also a waste of money considering we are at 3% or lower in positive tests.
