Eh what in god's name are you on about? Are you living in mid March? We are three months of direct effect(five if you count the actual outbreak) into this crisis. The east Asians brought in masks, border controls lockdowns and social distancing in a matter of days, the Czechs had their first cases around the time we did and our numbers were very similar, but they appear to have both a proactive government and a community spirit and brought in the same as the Asians in a matter of a couple of weeks and thereafter our numbers started to radically diverge. The Greeks were similar and did similar minus the masks and again the numbers diverged, to the point where we have tem times more dead than them. Ditto for the Portuguese. We still don't have border checks, quarantines, decent contact tracing and the speed of the testing and more the speed of results has been up and down like a whore's knickers for months. The same point my arse.

Many worry about Artificial Intelligence. I worry far more about Organic Idiocy.

'You should still stay at home whenever possible and only travel for essential reasons...

From 18 May 2020 you can also leave your home to avail of the expanded list of essential retail services as set out under the retail, personal services and commercial activities heading below...

People should not travel beyond 5 kilometres from where they live to visit any of the above facilities [cultural and social, golf, tennis].'

Garden centres are essential only for people who garden for a living.

    https://www.gov.ie/en/publication/cf9b0d-new-public-health-measures-effective-now-to-prevent-further-spread-o/#retail-personal-and-commercial-activities

Where are you seeing the bolded text in the link provided, I can't see it listed

The only reasons you can leave your home
Stay at home in all circumstances, except in the following situations:

to travel to and from work, if your work cannot be carried out from home
to shop for essential food and household goods
to attend medical appointments and collect medicines and other health products
for vital family reasons, such as providing care to children, elderly or vulnerable people, but excluding social family visits
for farming purposes, that is food production or care of animals
to engage in physical exercise within 5 kilometres of the home, adhering to strict 2 metre social distancing
to meet with friends or family within 5 kilometres in groups of no more than four, adhering to strict 2 metre social distancing
From 18 May 2020 you can also leave your home to avail of the expanded list of essential retail services as set out under the retail, personal services and commercial activities heading below.
    Retail, personal and commercial activities
From 18 May 2020 additional retailers will be allowed to reopen. All must implement social distancing arrangements in their premises to reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission. All must also apply the Return to Work Safely Protocol.

Retail outlets covered by these new arrangements include:

    1. Retail outlets that are primarily outdoor (for example, garden centres, farmer’s markets, hardware stores and so on) may reopen

    2. Retail outlets, in addition to those that are currently open.

    These include:

opticians and optometrists, outlets providing hearing test services, selling hearing aids and appliances
retailers involved in the sale, supply and repair of motor vehicles, motorcycles and bicycle repair and related facilities
hardware stores, builders’ merchants and stores that provide hardware products necessary for home and business maintenance, sanitation and farm equipment, supplies and tools essential for gardening / farming /agriculture
retail sale of office products and services for individuals working from home and for businesses
retailers providing electrical, IT and phone sales, repair and maintenance services for home and businesses
Retailers must put measures in place in their stores to minimise the spread of infection among customers and staff. These could include protective screens and barriers, operating new queueing approaches, limiting the number of customers and staff per store at any one time, providing cleaning stations, increasing store cleaning and hygiene, considering store layout to facilitate social distancing, extending opening hours to reduce crowding, implementing carpark restrictions, and so on.

Stores should be adequately prepared for the return of employees and customers. Public health advice to limit the spread of COVID-19 (hand hygiene, good respiratory etiquette, social distancing, wearing of face coverings) should be communicated to all staff. Cleaning schedules, waste disposal arrangements, arrangements to encourage social distancing between workers and alternative arrangements where social distancing is not always possible should be implemented.

If you are feeling sick you should stay at home and not go to work.

If you have been in contact with a confirmed or suspected case of COVID-19 you should stay at home and not go to work.

Retailers are advised to proactively engage with official authorities as they reopen and to consult with public health authorities on ways to minimise the risk of a COVID-19 outbreak within their stores.

    nothing to speak of

People really have a skewed view of how many people die now, obviously has decreased massively in recent weeks but 15 deaths daily is still a significant number of excess deaths in a country our size. 85 people die in a typical day in Ireland, almost a 20% increase in excess deaths, it remains as one of if not the leading cause of death in Ireland currently.

So Leo called Boris today. What's the betting political considerations - the cta - superceded the scientific advice on this one? We are expected to continue adhering to restrictions on our movements to keep the virus in check, while our neighbours from one of the worst affected countries in Europe will be exempt from partaking in that effort.

Ah O.K. it was your mention of garden centers being non essential other than for professional gardeners and not allowed as part of the 5km when they aren't that threw me.

Our policy is almost identical to England's.

I think the main reason they're opening garden centres is so that the employees (and professional gardeners) can go back to work, rather than for the punters.

Paraphrasing Oscar Wilde to lose one health minister may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose both looks like carelessness.

Read the details. Does not make any distinction as to who may go to the outlets. And retail is for sale to general public. How may builders do you think shop in woodies?

Under 'Cultural and social measures', as I mentioned.

Per below.- no mention of retail at all. And retail by definition is for the public. Woodies, b&q -retail. Chadwicks -trade and retail

    Cultural and social measures
From 18 May 2020, outdoor public amenities and tourism sites such as parks, beaches, mountain walks, heritage and cultural sites can reopen.

Outdoor sports facilities such as pitches, tennis courts and golf courses can also reopen.

Strict social distancing measures must be implemented at all these sites.

People may practice sport or fitness activities in groups of up to four people but they must practice social distancing, minimise contact, not share equipment and practice strict hygiene.

People should not travel beyond 5 kilometres from where they live to visit any of the above facilities.

You said you were going to ignore it anyway.

Why would there be a nationwide 5km travel limit except for the essential purposes of work, food shopping etc. that allowed people to travel any distance for leisure shopping in garden centres etc.?

It’s quite clearly defined and unambiguous in the wording. Travel to any of the retail outlets listed is permitted. Am I not allowed go to Halfords to get a new battery for my wife’s car?

    Some good news from Europe.

Slovenia has become the first European nation to declare the end of the COVID-19 epidemic within its territory today.

It is the size of Leinster and has a similar population. ie. 20,271 square kilometers and has a population of 2.084 million.

It had it's first case on March 4th and a total of 1465 cases with 103 deaths.

And guess what...on 29th March, wearing a face mask, even one made at home, or equivalents such as scarves that cover the mouth and nose was mandatory along with protective gloves.

Meanwhile we start with half assed measures regarding masks... still totally ignoring the fact that half of the transmissions occur due to presymptomatic cases.

"The proportion of pre-symptomatic transmission was 48% (95%CI 32-67%) for Singapore and 62% (95%CI 50-76%) for Tianjin, China."

If they did not declare it today they would legally have had to extend state state supports to individuals and businesses to the end of June. It was a financial decision

Edit and put the quote as dots in case they wish to change it and you're not online to edit it.

good idea. Have removed the posters boards id too, can you do this too as you quoted me!
@the poster that posted this (I have removed text and name as suggested by other posters in case you fix yours and my quoting remains), I would advise you not to get into that level of detail about your circumstances. Not that everyone from everywhere is on boards, but if your boss happened to be, they could potentially identify you from the above as you've provided many personal attributes (detailed in original post). Just saying.

I don't know why you're bothering to look for loopholes when you've already said you're going to ignore it.

And you haven't said what the new travel limit is for non-essential purposes such as leisure shopping.

So it had nothing to do with the number of cases they don't have ?
