And still no facemask order. Was this idiot Varadkar really a doctor? I find it very hard to believe he had the intelligence to get into medical school.

He Literally said to wear them(face coverings) on public transport and indoor retail outlets.

Hopefully that will change on 8th June and over 70's will be "allowed" to go shopping - my poor mother misses the supermarket :pac:

Indoors face covering. It's a tiny step in the right direction.

That’ll be checkpoints needed at the gates of tennis and golf clubs then.

Where did I leave my golf racket.....?

Have they explained why we didn't need face coverings for the 2 worst months of the virus and now they think we should? If social distancing remains the same, why the change? Or is it to keep pro-maskers (sounds like pro lifers hah) happy that they can have a "recommendation"?

He added that while he agrees on flattening the curve through a lockdown, "they will not prevent people from coming infected in the future".
Yeah, I see he doesn't mention quarantine anywhere. If we get rid of it in this country and quarantine all incomers then it never gets back in. Simple stuff from somebody who is not a scientist or a medical professional.

What I don't understand is how public transport will run on Monday with current seating restrictions in place.

Yeah you'd wonder. Not sure how many thousands are returning to work but maybe places could stagger opening times or for anyone who can to drive, cycle or walk?

As the restrictions are lifted there will be more people in the same areas in closer proximity for longer times than previously.

And then the Greens get into government and you are not allowed drive to work.

Yes I'd see potential doubling of current numbers at peak especially for those in retail reopening. (still probably 25% or less of pre covid peak travel).

Anyone else hear the name of the hospital that fecked up yesterday? Few people I've spoken to are fairly convinced it's a certain private hospital in Dublin.

A former state epidemiologist for Sweden has claimed Ireland's coronavirus lockdown is pushing the serious cases into the future.

Dr Johan Giesecke has also claimed the Irish approach is "destroying the fabric" of our society and economy.

Sweden has never gone into full lockdown - instead opting for a 'soft' approach.

They are keeping shops and restaurants open, and relying on people limiting their contact with other people.

Over 3,500 people have died there, but the hope is most of the population would be immune if there is a second wave.

Dr Giesecke, who is advising the Swedish government on its approach, told Newstalk Breakfast it is a better approach than the path Ireland is taking.

"One example is your neighbour the United Kingdom: they have more deaths per million inhabitants than Sweden has.

"And they've had a rather severe lockdown all the time, that's one example".

"The other is that what you do is you push your cases into the future - many people will get infected once you open the lockdown".

"But you can't keep a lockdown in Ireland for a year, that would be impossible."

He said he believes ultimately everyone will get the virus: "That's true for all respiratory tract infections like this - influenza, measles - you can't get rid of them without a vaccine.

"If a good vaccine comes along, then I'm wrong - but if not, everyone will get it in the end".

"I don't think that the serial lock-up is a very good solution.

"You're destroying the fabric of your society and your economy - and you [are] pushing the serious cases into the future."

He added that while he agrees on flattening the curve through a lockdown, "they will not prevent people from coming infected in the future".

And isnt that the whole point? Slowing the virus down enough so Health Systems can catch up and those who need the hospital care have access to it and survive.
And giving us time to learn more about it and treat it more effectively, so when we DO get it, we are given effective remedys?

I think the Dr that advised Sweden mucked up, and is desperately trying to justify bad decisions..

It's been widely reported that it was the Mater

They have said they did report the numbers

The people being allergic to face masks seems a bit of a cop out to make it mandatory. Surely people can find a material they aren't allergic to and cover their faces that way?

Should 100% be mandatory on public transport.

Yeah any increase would be a lot given current frequency of services and with seat restrictions. Especially in Dublin say

According to our glorious leaders, a hardware shop that sells homeware can open, but a homeware shop that sells hardware cannot. How ****ing stupid is that?

To say the economy should stay closed until a vaccine is produced is like, as Ian O'Doherty put it in an Indo article earlier this week, banning travel by motor vehicle just because of fatal road accidents.

Should 100% be mandatory on public transport.

Special needs children especially ones with autism would have sensory issues whereby getting them to wear a mask would be impossible for a lot of them.

will there really though in your local supermarket? Everyone nearly had one nearby regardless all along. I think they are just masking the truth hear to keep pro maskers happy :)

I do agree with masks on public transport, as people are near each other for an extended period of time. So I don't want to sound anti mask - I just feel that it is dependent on the circumstances. And a quick trip for a pint of milk is ott imo.

The UK R number is increasing again, according to the BBC, largely driven by the epidemic spreading in care homes:
