Would you go manual or auto in that?
Apparently adaptive suspension is a great extra to look out for on them too.
    I assume you’ve seen Joe Achilles ?

Yeah I’ve been doing a lot of YouTube research!
I still do very high millage and have a bad back so it’s auto for me.
I just want another hot hatch, I’ve tried fast diesel and while they can be very impressive they are just not that much fun. I also want to get a 6 cylinder petrol RWD car while I still can.

If you have a bad back, the seats in a m140i may not suit you as I think they are the same as m sport seats in the f30 3 series I had and the main reason I had to sell it was that my lower back and hip gave me grief partly down to the seats.
I have heard complaints from others about the seats too. I had no lumbar support on mine so maybe that might be something to look for?

Oddly enough I've heard they're not great to drive at all on standard springs and dampers, and you'd have more fun in one of its front driven rivals. It won't have the steering feel of an old BMW since it's electric not hydraulic steering, too.

Having said that, the appeal is obvious, especially when you consider what they did to the new one.

The value of an M140i can only go one way in the long run; we'll never see a car like it again - and more's the pity.

In any event, the alleged handling deficiencies can easily be solved by aftermarket springs and dampers, from what I've read, if you choose the right combination it will handle like you'd imagine a small BMW should. It has all the other ingredients of a proper BMW; big engine, rear wheel drive, 50:50 weight distribution, sure you can even have one with a manual gearbox, which I think is a good idea in a hot hatch (although the 8 speed ZF auto is brilliant and most of them are automatics anyway). Best of luck if you decide to get one :).

Right to the floor is where they go, the big engined bmw's that are not m cars are never classic or collectable. 545i, 645i, 335i take your pick, they are all about 3 grand now.

None of the cars you mentioned are anywhere near being classic yet. They’re at that awkward stage where they’re expensive to tax and harder to insure which is why they depreciate to those levels. Look a bit older and you’ll see e38 750i, e31 840i/850i, e39 540i, e36 328i are all starting to appreciate in value.

The 645i will be an interesting one as it was only sold in 2004 and 2005 before being replaced by the 650i

Well said. BMWs depreciate like a stone when new before eventually becoming almost worthless, only for their values to rise again, especially a big engined version. Obviously full fat ///M cars are worth the most, but that's not to say the non ///M models aren't worth something if you choose the right one, either.

Just look at the price decent E36s go for now, and that's nothing on the value of a mint E30; aside from the M3 of course, the 318is and 325i are highly desirable amongst E30 fans, but even the rest of the range goes for a few quid.

E31s also are starting to make serious money, next year the earliest ones will be eligible for €56 tax, those things were so well made you really could use one every day if you were a low mileage driver, who wouldn't say no to owning a V12 in Ireland that costs that little to tax? Classic insurance is usually very cheap, too.

Once BMWs start getting to the stage of classic insurance and especially vintage tax, their value goes rapidly up, especially if you get one with a big engine.

So in the context of the comment you made regarding m140i..... There's over two decades to wait.

'The value of an M140i can only go one way in the long run; we'll never see a car like it again - and more's the pity'...

Not really applicable to anyone buying one soon.....theyll depreciate like anything else will

I hope they depreciate a lot in the next couple of months so, would make my purchase a lot cheaper!

You’ll notice some difference in comfort/luxury going from a seven series to a one series.
Even a M140i is not a huge difference to a 116i on the inside.

Think I'd rather the traction of a golf r over the tail happy m140i, younger me would probably disagree though.

I'm mulling where to go when I return to Ireland in 2 years time, I work abroad, and have a hot hot hatch in mind and I'm intrigued by an A45 AMG over an M140i.

I know but I’ve had two Golf R’s and really miss a fun fast car. A golf R would be a lot faster down a twisty road but as much as I loved them they were a little too easy to drive fast. A rear drive 340 bhp petrol six just really appeals to me. I know it’s not a proper M car and it’s a M lite but anyone I’ve spoken to who has one loves it.
I can live with the relative basic interior.

I’m no spring chicken but I’m the opposite, I want the tail happiness!

I can’t decide whether I want to go with a decent petrol engine next or wait a bit and dive into electric as I see that as inevitable anyway.
I have been playing on the Tesla configurator and a New long range performance model with optional alloys for just over 60k looks like a good option. I have a feeling there would be much less depreciation than a BMW and cheaper to run too.

I’ve done similar on the Tesla configurator but think that I won’t have a choice some time in the future so I’ll stick with petrol for now while I still can

Lads could you live with the looks and that interior though?

Buy the performance version and you can set the car up in RWD only!! Haven’t tried it yet as it only came as an update a month or so ago, but you have to love it when they do updates like that.

The interior grows on you, I got the white and it looks really well. It’s minimalist but in my view I’d rather it than the f30, although it’s a long way from the g30 interior.

I’ve seen a few around now and the exterior is ok.
The interior I would have to get the white in but looks liveable. My main worry is quality and what happens if things go wrong.
Both digiman and Fitzgeme seem to have no regrets though.

Dont get a Tesla M3P. Worst thing you can do. It ruins all cars for you. All those beautiful big petrol cars, and muscular sports cars all seem so stupid and old fashioned, slow, unresponsive, expensive and unnecessary.

I am sick defending the interior. Its great. High quality, comfortable, clean and well designed. Its designed around space, not cocooning you making you feel a big car is small. Older interiors seem quaint, like big old wooden furnature compared to a eames chair. The technology is above all rivals.

I dont know what people think is going to go wrong, but buy one new and you have 4 years manufacturers warranty, and 8 battery and drive-train. Servicing is minimal and infrequent. Take it to tesla when it breaks, they are one of the worlds biggest car manufacturers now cant hang onto worry they will go bust any longer.

As I said, dont get one. Most people are not in the mindset to change their opinions so radically and admit their prejudices were formed from ignorance. RWD and traction off in trackmode V2 is epic donught fun and drift tastic, so easy start a slide with electric torque.

The 3 really does interest me. The only way I could justify the cost though is to get one car for the house while I tip around in whatever car I have (assuming press cars happen again after all this - should've been in a Focus ST3 this week ) and that would mean the wife would be driving it Monday to Friday and I just don't know how I'd feel about that.

Incidentally, the Model S I had a few weeks ago, I logged into my Spotify account in the car and last weekend I was playing some tunes on my phone when suddenly the song stopped and a load of 60s music started coming up on my screen but I couldn't hear it. I looked down at the playing on source and it was the Tesla Ireland car playing through my account. I kept pausing their songs and skipping next until they presumably copped on and logged out.

Do Tesla Ireland have a model 3 press car Mark?
Would love to see a test. I will take a drive myself at some stage though whenever it’s possible again but it would be next year At the earliest before I would commit to changing car anyway so plenty of time.
Hopefully quality on the Tesla can only go one way.
When I see the prices of what the id 3 and other electric cars are likely to be the Tesla just looks better all the time.
That said my heart wants a petrol engine. Head says electric too compelling to ignore.
Also if the greens join the government it will accelerate the push to electric and the sanctions on ice cars I think.

The 3 would suit me down to the ground, it ticks virtually every box. There's nothing in your posts I disagree with.

But to me the biggest compromise is its styling, inside and out. Enough to make me not want one. I buy cars based on how it makes me feel and to me the 3 seems like the mathematical correct choice, but does zero for me in the heart department.

I'll wait until Tesla or whoever else presents me with the same package in a great looking car.

No just that she'd be getting the most use out of it while I pay :pac:

Although yeah, the above tweet and my own experience of what happened in the other Model S is hard to ignore.

you forgot to add the bit about her kerbing the wheels and letting it get dinged in car parks :D

Oh don’t worry, I thought of that too. She had 100kms on a new Qashqai before, drove at a mad angle onto a kerb and burst the tyre. Don’t think the car was a week old.

On the model 3 press car, there possibly is one but it doesn’t seem to have done the rounds much. I’ll ask for one and see how I get on whenever this all ends.
