Hard to know what the fall our from all this is going to be, impossible price a car at the moment, I hear the banks are open but you'd be lucky to get a free biro off them let alone a car loan. We also don't know the long term health problems covid could throw up, it could be a question on a loan application yet.
There's going to be a glut of new cars for sale after this at knock down prices it's got to hurt used values. Throw Pascal and the Greens into the mix and we'll be lucky if we can tax a push bike next year.

I'm not showing the Mrs this ad from the same garage as she'll loose it when she sees how much her's could have depreciated

Where they getting them at that price, seems cheap.

Ohh and that m5 is silver lay off the top shelf.

i doubt he could sell you one for 30k somehow, the ad is a bit misleading.

It's a D5 like above herself has, it can move for such a small engine and big car. Sounds like your strangling it but does the job, there's a polestar upgrade to tune it and improve the gearbox but last time I checked the Volvo dealer wanted close to 2k for it while it was 750 in the UK.
    https://engineered.polestar.com/uk/product/optimisation/xc90-d5-drive-e-awd-automatic-2017
It's meant to seriously improve the gearing.

I have the Polestar on a D4 and it’s definitely a no brainier for 750 sterling, aside from the hp increase it removes the knockdown lag by speeding up gear changes

Considering it’s a software upgrade, why don’t Volvo just have it programmed as standard to perform better?
Why sell the car with a less than optimum set up?

you could ask the same question of every forced induction car that can be remapped? you can get remaps for any of the x35d bmws that adds a lot more bhp and torque as well.

Even just do the software upgrade on the gearbox, the extra few bhp wouldn't concern me. It should be included with a service if it improves drivability.

Yes but the polestar only adds 10bhp I think.
It primarily improves throttle response and gearshift not big gains in power and torque.

    Is this very overpriced?
What is it worth and any guess what it would trade back in for in two years?
Would it be optimistic to say it would be worth 40k in two years?

Hard to argue with that price from a main BMW dealer when this one is 20k more expensive:

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/bmw-m3-competition-pack-yas-marina-blau-immacul/24182593

Year newer, but double the mileage and doesn't have that comprehensive 2 year warranty.

It adds a Polestar mode to exploit the full performance from the car - stiffens up steering and changes gear changes as well as increases/ changes in profile of torque and bhp. Definitely doesn’t suit everybody. I think if you leave it in eco mode it drives the same as a non polestar optimised car

The Mrs won't notice it, she's driving my Revo GTI most of lockdown. She thinks the Volvo feels more powerful.

The 996 has to be the ugliest looking 911 variant ever produced, plagued with reliability issues too. Avoid like the plague.

Would this Carrera s not interest you? 5k more than the targa with only 19000 miles. That or the targa seem to be the only decent options available in that price category.

    https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/porsche-911-carrera-s-auto-2dr-1-owner-from-new/22007819

This one looks well imo too, linked earlier:

First one is auto with no sunroof, second one pretty much the same.
My original question was what will the next guy want? I think the targa manual is the more desirable of the lot.
I do like the colour of the grey 06, it's auto but it's got the sunroof and wouldn't cost me much to change. https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/porsche-911-carrera-s-2-owner-car-nct-02-21-tr/24478940

I've been watching that one for a while, and I don't believe it is what it claims to be. Genuine Competition spec had different wheels, badges and seats to begin with. Unfortunately there's no registration to do a proper check, but I'm pretty sure it's just a normal M3.

Edit to add - this is a genuine Competition spec M3. Note the wheel design, black badge, holes in the front seats. 2018 and the same price as the questionable 2017. https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/bmw-m3-2018-bmw-m3-competition-pack-full-bmw-hi/24381392

As for the grey one, you'd get similar in from the UK for nearly 10k cheaper - and that's before Covid hits the used car pricing. Vrt + nox for a 2016 is about 20k. There's no mention of warranty being offered either.

Hmm, I'm not seeing the 10k cheaper in the uk to be honest. I had a look in auto trader and the average price was around 30k sterling, 34k in euros for 2016. Add 18k vrt (mental money) is 52k plus travelling etc and you might save 3 or 4k but you won't have piece of mind with a comprehensive warranty. Plus, I'm sure there is a bit of haggling on that price on the grey one too. So you might be saving 2k at best which I don't think is worth the hassle without the warranty and travelling.

Edit: Just checked auto trader again and the average price for a 2016 M3 is 34k sterling, 38k euros. Taking into account the low mileage on the one in morrisons, plus room for haggling, I doubt you'd save anything at all really.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,832 ✭✭✭carsfan2

I can't see a big saving in the UK versus the car from Morrisons I linked to be honest. A couple of grand cheaper was the best I could see and then take into account the two year warranty and the handyness of buying from Irish dealer.
Anyway, probably just a Covid pipe dream when having to much time to access the internet for me.

The other car linked is deffo not competition pack as has been said.
Something like this is probably a better daily driver than m3.

Tell us more about the etron.
Why the move to electric and what spec. Are there good deals on them?

We have a glc and I don’t really want to buy a new diesel given the uncertainty over its future and our particular circumstances that make ev range less important.

Wanted a velar originally but passed on the basis above

I think plug in hybrids are a bit of a cod and will disappear soon.

I went for the etron 50 sport , 270-300k max range. Typhoon grey with black pack and privacy glass.

It’s an 85k car, you get 10 off in grants and then negotiated another 4 or so to bring it just a shade over 70k.

Pretty decent value for a large premium suv with over 300 bhp I think . And again range not such an issue for us .

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,136 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

Velar looks great, we were close to one but went with the Volvo for the 7 seats.
I don't think it's a great time to buy new there has to be a firesale on new cars in the next couple of months, I'd be expecting 0% finance offers as well.
There were some videos of the stockpiles of new vw, Audi just sitting in huge fields unsold in Germany online last week. The manufacturers are meeting the German chancellor Monday to see what can be done to help sales but some manufactures are offering up to 35% off new car prices already there.
Don't want to quench your excitement but it might pay to be cautious right now.

Yep I’m looking for a bit more off if it doesn’t materialise I might back out and try again later in the year

That said my trade is only going one way aswell

i am the same, the lack of 7 seats is the issue, makes it hard move from the Xc90, although we are eager to go ev on the family car.

As for the F82 M3/m4 I really would caution buying at the moment. I clocked valued plummeting about 12 months ago, early 142 and 151 examples were going for 55-60k, then 6 months ago low 40's private and trade price. I cashed out early, but now there are dealers examples in the low 40s and its only down from there. Covid will speed that up. I would say in Jan 2021 you will get one on Irish plates for high 20's. New one is due out soon enough

It could be best hold tight, I'm not confident this curve is going to stay flat once places start opening up. Banks will be cautious to lend.
Diesel and petrol prices are going to remain low for a good while, that takes the shine off EV's, range in the etron is very small, can't imagine you'd get too far down the west coast will a full load.

I’m fine with the range to be honest it’ll cover 95 percent of what we do with no issue .

I’ll see what I’ll do on the 18th there will need to be a proper deal on the table anyway

I’m not concerned with values now rather 3/4 years time I still think evs are the way to go and I’m wary the government will pull another stunt like the diesel one that killed petrol sales 10 years ago
