To be honest if another V12 pops up for cheap, i'll take that too as these are only going one way in terms of value. If I sink €8-€10k into this and is then sitting on classic tax, it will be quite a valuable car. This is possibly the first 850i to become a classic in Ireland?

As long as you have a main policy, classic insurance is a breeze, I got a quote before for an E38 and it was under €480 which is actually on the high side. There are mileage stipulations of 3-5k km a year but that's plenty.

I'm the same as you, no interest in the slightest in your "traditional" classic car, but now the nice German metal is getting old enough, things have got much more interesting.

when I think of what these were going for during the recession, god, hindsight! you wouldnt get one now or would pay a lot here.

a decent looking one went for about 6 sterling on ebay a few weeks back, the seller had excellent feedback. you cant get online estimate for VRT for E31

Looking forward to following your progress. I remember you had a video up of a newer 7 series that you had tidied up and it was immaculate.

Awesome stuff Steve, I look forward to watching your progress.
I remember when the 850 was launched and cycling home from school to a BMW dealer and sitting in one, I’ve loved them ever since and it has to be the V12 not the 840.

Looking forward to watching the series. It's my goal to own one of these some day. This Germans guy's Youtube channel is worth a watch as he fixes up some 8 series that he bought.

Not much content on it yet, but he knows these cars well.

Seeing your video reminded me of the first time I saw one in the metal.
It was Chris de Burgh’s car parked up around 1990/91 while he was at some event in the college I attended. Probably an honarary degree or some such rubbish. I walked past that car about ten times I’d say. You just didn’t see cars like that in Ireland back then.
Edit. Just did a quick google, he got an MA in 1990 so that was it.

I scrapped the 740e idea and went back 30 years instead, much more fun! :D

    A wise call:D!

How does a car drop €90k in 3 years?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,653 ✭✭✭Voodoomelon

As its most likely hasn't, list price was €116k in 2017 for M-Sport XDrive 740D, there's about €4k in options on it. And the first buyer didn't pay close to that, so more than likely lost about €55-€60k.

The seller is a bit optimistic about the spec too, top of the range and the wrong bhp too.
All luxury cars, S Class, A8 a 7 Series loose a huge amount of value in the first couple of years which is why they are such a great used buy.

Quinns have a similarly specced car for 10k more. You get the 2yr warranty, yes, but 10k is a fair chunk of money between 2 almost identical cars.

I know it's near a total irrelevance with cars like these when new or newish in terms of tco, but being able to drive these cars going from one extreme to the other on the motor tax front is about time!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,446 ✭✭✭Wailin

Those 740d's are only €290 to tax. I don't know how bmw manage it. My own 535d has same engine with slightly less power 313hp instead of 320hp and is €390 to tax.

Market must be tiny for them, corporate PSVs etc?

I'd imagine the top cover warranty over 2 years from www.bmw-warranty.ie on that wouldn't cost 10k. It's pretty much has the same cover as a BMW Approved Used Car warranty.

The more this lockdown continues they more i'm looking at these pair of 911's
If the targa was 10k cheaper i'd probably bite, my main concern is what's either worth in 2yrs. New ones are out of budget and seems to be very little from 07 on...

    05 Carerra S auto

    Anyone experience of these...

Beautiful cars, but agree, that targa is crazy money really. I'd imagine insurance with be a killer on these now over 10 yrs old and big petrol engines.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,485 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

I must check out insurance tomorrow, I usually do ok with Axa.

Targa is lovely, tax is a killer but you need to spend 100k to get one with the cheap tax. I'm thinking it's one of those cars that mighten depreciate a huge amount for a long time and possibly go up at some stage could take a long time to sell, I think the 05 one is for sale since middle of last year. Would it be a sin to buy an auto, I won't get a second chance as the kids will be too big.

Tax is e1809, that's madness on the luxobarges worth 2/3k on a 50k car though? Whatever, it's a pittance compared to what youd live on newer one with depreciation and finance cost

I wouldn't give 50 for it, trying to get a vrt price on an import could be very tricky as that's the only one they could judge it on. If you go 08 up your into €2350 tax.

Yeah e2350 is comedy, the 1809 is a scandal bit just about palatable for some cars

Had a high tax 530 for a couple of years. It's painful. Realistically could only keep it about 2yrs so wouldn't bother me too much.

Yeah not worth it on a five Imo. If the tax is ridiculous, I want a relatively " ridiculous " car fo justify it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 28,485 ✭✭✭✭drunkmonkey

It was either that or take my chances on an exploding 520, I saw it more as insurance than tax.

Yeah I get you ... again it depends on value if car , I meant more now with like fifteen year old cars etc ... with many new cars that would have been very expensive new here, its gone from one extreme to the other with motor tax...

It's a mess of a system. I'm all for a flat tax everyone pays the same regardless of car. Think I worked it out at about €450 a year each before.

Charging less taxes for diesel is a joke for a start, I believe the Dutch charge more motor tax on diesels...

I reckon the vast majority of the older rip off tax rate cars will be gone soon any way, makes no sense paying those kind of rates for the vast majority of cars in the 3L plus bracket

I think Fitzgeme had a Porsche 911 of that era a few cars back before he became an electric convert. He would be a good man to ask.

In a small market like Ireland probably wouldn’t be too hard to find the history of those cars.

It would appear the price of fuel is going to go down and stay down for a while which will definitely slow the march of electric and make running a car such as the Porsche a nice alternative. My main concern as ever would be the price of putting something right If you do have a problem as I don’t think they are as bullet proof as people think and Obviously the tax is a pain.

...........I think the 05 one is for sale since middle of last year. .................

Surely there's 10% to come off that asking if you aren't trading something in, especially in Covid19 times.
Can't see that one losing much over the next two years .......... is there such a thing as a decent 911 for under €20k?
