Every post you address you bring to the personal level questioning motives, claiming people are pushing agendas and somehow have a motivation to manipulate the message, I am just someone expressing my opinion based on what I observe. If I disagree with you it’s not personal, but it’s still my view. And my view remains that all the data I have seen is entirely consistent with my view that we have maintained things under control.
I do very much appreciate that 40 or so deaths a day for a number of days is a difficult thing for everyone to see.
So please, question my data, my facts or opinions all you want. But my motivations are just what I see

These tables are indeed of limited value since they don't control for geographical variables like urbanization, number of airports, island status etc---all variables that capture the ease with which people encounter both domestic and foreign carriers. These are critical variables in facilitating the transmission of the disease and in assessing how well a country is faring given its geographical status. And Ireland is in fact doing terribly compared to countries with similar geographical characteristics. The fact that there is a fifty-fold difference between Ireland and Australia/New Zealand in deaths per capita is hardly due to reporting differences. Rather, these countries exploited their geographical status to quickly contain the virus, while we simply squandered ours---and look at the mess we're in now, with the economy in free fall and the gov clueless as to what to do next.

John waters will probably regret his actions when some of those present at that protest who looked over 70 I will add get covid

John Waters never regrets anything. Sure look at his haircut.

    He's an utter prick.

Thats some clanger from him though. He's supposed to be part of the leadership thats fighting this virus in our country and he hasn't a clue. He's the minister for health FFS. He should be dismissed immediately.

Believe or not our health minister doesn’t need to be an expert in medicine just health policy. Listen to the cmo and other health experts on dealing with the virus, Harris on how we are dealing With related public health issues. How he made that mistake I can’t understand though, but perhaps tiredness after nearly two months of this.

He is a bit rabbit in the headlights at this stage though after a good start. In his defence though, I think most people in a similar position would be the same or worse

I would say it’s more to do with the controlled breathing of smokers than the nicotine itself.

I’m in Galway. I’ve been out and about most days and not seen one. They don’t seem that visible to me.

But whether they are or not, my chief point was that the Gardai do not enforce the law with a big stick here. Mass fining and arresting people is not going to happen, it’s not how law enforcement here works. People here who assume otherwise have been watching too much US crime drama.
Look at the arrest/court reports for the few who have been arrested. Generally they’ve given the Gardai other very strong reasons to take action - e.g. with driving with no licence/insurance, scummy behaviour like spitting at the Guards, etc.

Yesterday we had 730 deaths. Today we had 49 deaths and yet the total number of deaths is 769. Shouldn't it be 779? What happened to the other 10 deaths?

Ah look iv'e no time for FG ive voted SF the last two elections but ffs he's under incredible pressure more pressure than any other minister for health in the history of our country.

Two cats in New York tested positive for the virus.

If and when the virus comes into the house, the cat also has to isolate themselves. How do you keep a cat inside to stop carrying the virus on their fur and into other people's homes.

I'm worried that if cats can get it from their owners, can the virus jump back to us?

Yes, there is an agenda among many people on here... I never commented on your personal agenda. (If you have one)

My comments were directed more generally at many posters on the thread, rather than any one in particular.

I disagree with you, I don't think we have this under control... I think that's wishful thinking.

Several weeks ago, many people were predicting that we would be seeing a drop in daily death rates... but we're not. It's going up quite significantly. And now people are repeating this again, that we should see a drop over the next few weeks... bullsh*t predictions and forecasts!

Very obvious things are being ignored. Daily average death rate is increasing at a huge rate... and our total cases too. We added almost 7,000 cases in the past 10 days - people seem to ignore this stat, like it's not important. But it is important, because more cases is pretty much guaranteed to produce more deaths... and that is precisely what we are seeing now!

And even though this should be very obvious, people ignore it... and people are shocked when they see a big spike in deaths. Why are you shocked? Some of you are searching for complex answers, when many of the answers are straight forward and obvious!

You talk about variables but then compare us to New Zealand... How many visitors does Ireland have compared to New Zealand? A quick google tells me we have about 3 times as many visitors a year.

How many Irish people leave for business trips to the Europe and visa versa? Ireland was quite clearly at risk of danger sooner that New Zealand was.

    But you know this.

I think they should absolutely all be experts on all things Covid by this stage.
At least to the level of your average boards user anyway.

Granted I've never been under the pressure he's currently under, but I've never come close to making a professional gaff like that and I don't think I ever will.

    Poppers is right.

A big batch of swabs arrived at our lab last night at 11pm. The NAS had been collecting swabs from nursing homes in the county and parts of surrounding counties.

It would have been better to have a steady stream of swabs coming to the lab throughout the day when most staff are at work.

A big batch coming in at 11pm when there is 1 person on call was a huge workload, on top of their other Microbiology testing.

The 24 to 36 hours starts once the samples reach the lab. The lab have no control over what happens to the swab before that.

Yes, and we are so much worse than the counties with which we share a trade union, a currency, free movement of people and hundreds of daily flights with, and also with the countries thousands of miles from anywhere. Apples and apples please. If we knew in mid February what we now know maybe we could have shut down, but who was doing that then? After that it was too late and already here

No it's not a joke question. If it can jump from human to cat, can't it jump back to us?

A cat that is used to roaming about the place, how do you just keep them in all of a sudden. That change in their routine will stress them out.

I shut down my family in late February.
I could see what was coming. I'm not a trained medical expert, I'm not a scientist, just an ordinary man who can read and listen to information and hopefully make the best choice. Our government are supposed too to do that for us, for the greater good and they failed miserably.
I'm here now at 50 years of age realising that I'm better equipped to manage our country in a time of crisis than the buffoons in Leinster House. I honestly never ever thought I'd say or believe that

You've summed it up. Idiots making their minds up and taking to the internet to rant after just reading a headline.
Ever hear of reading an article?

    Yes, I did read it.

Did you read it yourself, brainbox?

The article doesn't clarify anything related to gatherings UNDER 5K... it only states the policy on gatherings OVER 5K... hence why it's an ambiguous statement for a government to make to the public!

It sounds like the maximum gathering permitted is 5,000 people. Which is not the case at all, it seems. When they could have simply stated, that concerts and large sporting events would not be given licenses this summer - which would have been much more clear and less confusing for people!

lol. I haven’t seen a Garda checkpoint yet.

If people think the Gardai are going out there in force dishing out fines and arresting people going to the shops they are completely deluded.

Well I’ve seen 3 in different places in the last 5 days, stopped at one, I had a letter, it was fairly casual “where are you going, okay, see ya now”.

The distancing will fizzle out over the next few weeks and a lot won't be following the guidelines eventually if nothing is done to stop the obvious slide happening, which means Leo and Co are going to give us another 2+ weeks lockdown.
