Interesting to hear Dr Tony mention that the disease has an R0 number of 4 or 5. Goes against the panic quelling speeches early on in the crisis. Sounds like how were we to know. Of course nursing homes were screwed kinda vibe.
It does seem like we went straight for mitigation rather than containment.

Any details yet on the regions - haven't been any deaths in the South in recent days?

That can't be right as know of some deceased in the South (Cork and Cork county) from Covid19

I don't watch tv or these briefings. What does that mean - another 130?

It's not in the press release but Tony stated something like 70 + 60 or so deaths in private nursing homes/care homes (can't remember which way round) were suspected to be Covid-19 related

To date they have made it clear the official death figures related solely to people who had been diagnosed via a test

They don't set it out anywhere but my presumption is that means the overall total deaths is over 800, and that also ignores anyone who may die at home without having been tested

    That jump is heartbreaking. :(

According to some posters we are moving in the right direction, though.

It's not much solace to those grieving tonight, but i hope he is right so more people can be spared this pain, which is exacerbated when those left behind can't even give the deceased a proper send off. These poor people:(

Includes 1 death later rescinded by HSE (Mar. AKAIR) but not geographically located, so left in. HSE 15th Apr - 1 death that was reported earlier has now been discounted, again not geographically located, so left in.

So looking at that graph, whatever case may be made for an easing of the restrictions in many parts of the country after 5th May, I think Dublin and surrounding counties will have to remain with current restrictions in place for at least another few weeks after that date. Even taking into account the population difference the contrast in reported deaths between the East and the rest of the country is literally off the scale.

Is there any where we can see the daily deaths as opposed to the deaths reported in a day ?

Whether that 77 is all from today or weekend included, it is devastating such a high death number, those poor grieving families

Very true. I didn't consider this. Did Italy report non-hospital deaths? I'm not sure.

What do you mean take out deaths in nursing homes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! These are people who died aswell. An 84 yr old nurse died of CV today whilst still working to help save lives. You have to be some moron

It's not all from today. It's from unknown dates. It could be the weekend, it could be a week ago.

For whatever reason, they aren't able to give real time figures that tell us how many people died today.

77 today, those 20,000 who went to Cheltenham must be very proud of themselves.

It will always show downward trend in the last few days, untill later reported deaths are added in, and so on

We obviously have a lot of posters who don't value the elderly and belittle nursing home deaths.

They don't seem to realise they more than likely will finish their days in care too.

Some of the posts are just cowardly, they wouldn't dare say that to a group of people in real life for fear of the consequences. On here they can be heroes in their petty little minds.

No one wants perpetual lockdown. Most are realists. They know we won't be in shape for any opening up in a fortnight.

You judge a society, especially a democracy, on how it treats its weak and vulnerable.

Agree but it would give a reflection of things around 2 weeks ago.

A lot of countries are not reporting nursing home deaths. These are the same countries many here are championing as doing a great job in comparison to Ireland. Measure us the same as them and we'd be looking great too.

It seems that people in care homes are being treated there. I wonder are many people being transferred from homes to hospitals or are they making a clinical decision to leave in the care homes. It seems that HSE are doing their best to keep hospitals and ICU from overloading. Maybe they should review their policies and try move people who are now in care homes but may have a better chance in a hospital.

Exactly. You need to be an planet reality though.

Wishing this is better than it actually is is not helpful.

Our deaths per million population is worse than the US at present.

Ah look, what they did was stupid. It looked a bit stupid at the time, a lot more so in hindsight.

But the amount of times I'm seeing them referenced on here whenever there is bad news is nonsense.

They're the go-to group whenever people want to feel morally superior. I suppose every crisis/bad situation needs a pantomime villain.

The reason the death number are so spread across time is that there are at least four different death reporting methodologies feeding into the ad hoc system set up by the HSE for COVID-19, and those underlying systems are probably not going to change in the short term or even medium term.

Slightly off topic but relevant to current death figures.

Why in 2020 do we allow a time window of three months for a death to be reported?

US numbers are a complete crock. They are barely testing their dead unfortunately. Politics has taken over there.
