That's taken a fair drop in price already. I always look at pics of the new 1 series and think God what have you done BMW. But when I see it in person it's the complete opposite. Impressive interior, it really is nice to sit in.

I agree, they’re nicer in the metal than in pictures but you’re never going to look at it sitting on your drive and think “Wow. That looks good”.
Nice spec on that with heads up, adaptive lights, HK sound. I don’t know how well Alcantara seats wear over time though.
They will be rare over here but are no more expensive than a golf gti or golf R nowadays.

One thing it needs is the black pack or whatever bmw call it. Get rid of those horrible grills and the grey bits on the front bumper. In the old configurator you could spec it but not on the new one for whatever reason.

The interior is streets ahead of the current golf r, no shock there, but I wonder how the mk viii golf interior compares.

The new 1 series has a great interior, all new BMW’s do now but their styling is just not good. I’ll admit they are better in the metal but that’s a pig of a yoke. The fact that the equivalent Hyundai is probably a better looking car makes me sad.

Not only that, but all the things that made a 1 series stand out from the crowd - namely rear wheel drive, and the possibility of a six cylinder engine (with the added bonus of a manual gearbox for even greater driver involvement if you wanted it), are gone.

Sure even the trademark red-orange instrument backlighting is gone. I suppose the idiots in the marketing department probably thought it would get them a few more sales, but that just goes to show how much they've lost their way.

The old M135i/M140i will acquire cult status soon and appreciate in value, they do after all represent the end of an era.

lads sorry, the previous link, went to some random page, there is the uk results for petrol GC...

I'd pay the E750 rate of motor tax for it tops, which is what they are. Thats what I feel that car warrants if petrol, whereas the other one I will consider in a while the facelift w221 4.8 twin turbo, is E1200. Which is actually pretty good value on our fcuked up motor tax system, when you consider if it had a fraction more Co2 it would be the criminal E2350 rate.

(same thing happened again, I post the link and it just goes off to some random page)! any way a 2014 black m sport 100k miles is 15k sterling, black, 640i or 2015 , same details, 40k miles, 19 sterling...

Indeed if BMW or any other mass manufacturer just appealed to enthusiasts then they would Not exist for very long. Where BMW have succeeded is in appealing to the enthusiast and having a premium badge to appeal to customers who don’t care how the car drives.
By constantly going into new niches and chasing sales they have diluted the driving experience in exchange for sales. I read before that most one series customers didn’t know or care if their car was front or rear wheel drive.

Im sure there is a big percentage of all car owners that know nothing of which end of the car the drive comes from.

The new one series will be based on the mini platform so FWD. And really it doesnt matter. While BMW may well have been the ultimate driving machine they have not had direction in many years. The halo M cars have been selling a lot of low end, expensive enginless poser models for years. They cannibalise their owner range buy reusing engines all over the place. Everything gets an automatic gearbox and an artificial sound. The sluggish take up of electric drivetrains has left them at a severe disadvantage. The reliability scandals have left a bad taste in a lot of enthusiasts mouths also., never mind that they have employed Stevie Wonder to do all their recent styling. The golden era of BMW is long gone.

agree with the above! I do like the 8 series looks though! god when you think back to what bm used to be, the E39, E46, the older up to 2001 7 series, loads of others, the stuff was just soooooo good!

like the cars had soul! In my opinion, they have nothing now, what do most of them have? all you hear about is bloody gimicky gadgetry

they literally want to sell you the latest phone , on wheels...

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,445 ✭✭✭Wailin

True. But you could say that about all the german brands nowadays. At least BMW have elegant interiors unlike the chavy merc and audi range. Mercedes e class looks like it was designed by a teenager on ecstasy ffs.

BMW interiors are still top notch and that 8 series is divine to be fair!

I actually like the styling on the new 1 series, it's grown on me. BMW are late to the game with their electric offerings though.

Find me a similar Audi or Mercedes that isn't the same. Raiding the parts bin from VW and Renault respectively. Adding fake engine sounds and exhaust pipes, the list goes on.

this is true, although I definitely think merc were very poor for a long time , when bmw were doing so well and then merc really pulled up their socks. compared to where they were. I suppose more, because I have had a few bm and so has the bro, even some of the nicer stuff like a 6 series and you just look at it all now and its all just about "economy" and playing it safe... Hence more why I was highlighting bm, but you are right, about the others too MB and audi

The new Audi interior on the A6 and a few others has two screens and no buttons which looks great until you have to use them which isn’t great but nothing is as bad as the fake exhausts.

A lady got lost down here, reversed into a grassy field gap, now it was summer so perhaps she thought shed get out, on a wet day but got stuck with the rwd. The neighbour came across her and pulled her out. The fecker got two all Ireland tickets for his trouble which was sound of her in fairness. Still be no harm to know where the power is going to sometimes

I hate, and I mean, hate, touch screens. If I ever rise to power they will be banned!

Even though they've reduced the number of them, at least BMW still does buttons, although the i4 concept's interior worries me as it looks like they're following their rivals.

    https://www.completecar.ie/features/post/9971/Hot-hatch-twin-test-BMW-M135i-vs-Mercedes-AMG-A-35

Irish comparison of these two. Both are expensive, Mercedes especially.
I wouldn't be surprised if the car I linked for sale is this actual car.

Yep, looks like the BMW Ireland press car alright, retailed at 59k when new as tested, now looking for 50k. It would want be a bit cheaper for an ex press car.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,483 ✭✭✭MarkN

It will have been driven on alright but servicing, tyres etc would've been kept on top of.

I scrapped the 740e idea and went back 30 years instead, much more fun! :D

Thanks guys. Yep he fairly shifted her off the back. To be honest he probably didn't know how bad the brakes were, they're shocking.

    Yes sir.

class car voodoo, was looking at them a few weeks back, was thinking, as soon as they are 30 year old, you get your dirt cheap motor tax and a car likley appreciating in value, what is the situation with classic insurance and restrictions? I would have no interest in the vast majority of older, older cars, but the old 8 series are just fantastic!

I love seeing older special cars restored and not rotting! 60/70k new ten a penny ,3,4,5 series drives past , nobody will look twice. The likes of that car though, different story! best of luck with her!!! Did wheeler dealers ever take on an E31?

I was expecting worse when I saw this comment, I thought it was just about on the acceptable side... just saw the end of the video, listen, of course there is an issue with the coolant system :)

To be honest if another V12 pops up for cheap, i'll take that too as these are only going one way in terms of value. If I sink €8-€10k into this and is then sitting on classic tax, it will be quite a valuable car. This is possibly the first 850i to become a classic in Ireland?

As long as you have a main policy, classic insurance is a breeze, I got a quote before for an E38 and it was under €480 which is actually on the high side. There are mileage stipulations of 3-5k km a year but that's plenty.

I'm the same as you, no interest in the slightest in your "traditional" classic car, but now the nice German metal is getting old enough, things have got much more interesting.
