The cork guy that was on life support, he looks fit and healthy, it's so scary and it can happen to any of us.

Just imagine those few minutes before being knocked out as they put you into a coma. It must be the scariest thing to have to go through.

The odds of someone young fit and healthy reacting like that to it are thankfully miniscule. If we were all to worry about everything bad that could happen to us we'd never enjoy a day of our lives.

Do you follow Trumps nightly comedy show?

It is definitely a competition to him, under 100000 official and he declares victory, because his actions brought it down from 2.2 Million.

So any deaths unrecorded are a bonus

Under 100k dead and everyone will consider it a victory.

This is why we all need to stay at home for the moment. We really don't want ICUs overrun and unable to help folks in the way he was helped.

We don't know enough about this thing yet to conclude anything. As if know it's the elderly, obese and those with underlying conditions that have been hardest at hit by covid-19.
The South Korean discovery is another new factor where previously recovered people are now infected again and we don't know how that's going to play out.

A virologist has just been on BBC Radio 5 Live stating that due to its nature it will be very difficult to develop a vaccine for this virus and in his opinion it will be 18 months to 2 years before an effective one is available.

This is our generations smallpox or scarlet fever or the Spanish flu or TB. We're going to need to deal with this as best we can and hopefully a vaccine will be formed but the vaccine will be for the next generation. We can't live under lockdown until a vaccine comes about.

There are people coming here through airports though. Not for business. I am certain some are through ferries.

All travel for people should be halted intentionally it should be only cargo and its personal.

    This is the problem.

A certain relaxing of restrictions may come this summer, idk, perhaps, but it will be a constant battle to keep the virus low in the population.

It's such a delicate balancing act, I'm just glad I don't have to make these life and death decisions :(

oh boy, trump won't like this

    https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/apr/12/fauci-trump-rebuffed-social-distancing-advice-coronavirus

Prominent US public health adviser Dr Anthony Fauci appeared on Sunday to confirm a bombshell New York Times report which said he and other Trump administration officials recommended the implementation of social distancing to combat the coronavirus in February, but were rebuffed for almost a month.

The South Korean discovery is as valid as claims a vaccine will be ready in September, people need to stop quoting it as if it's fact, it isn't. It needs further investigation.

    Do we?

The official figures are those that died from covid 19. Do they also include those whose death came from other factors but were related to covid 19 like heart failure?

Yes, we include all those who die (of whatever direct cause) who test positive for Covid-19. I understood from one of the press briefings that this includes test results confirmed post-mortem.

"Note: Ireland (HSE) to its credit follows best practice guidance from the WHO and counts anyone who has tested positive for Covid-19 and passed away in mortality statistics. Not every country follows WHO good practice, so there could be much under-reporting in the table below in other countries, so few if any conclusions can be drawn at this stage"

Fauci, like that navy commander, probably realised he has to fall on his sword for the truth to come out.

Deaths in the EU now at 75,000. About 50% of the predicated total deaths so long as social distancing measures are kept in place

Guy from Stena Line responded, saying "On the 4 ferries a day into Dublin, there are 60 passengers today and 30 tomorrow... Lots of freight traffic though."

That's 90 non-freight people over 2 days from a country where the disease is running rampant. Well, that's reassuring! We're still one of the only countries in the world with unrestricted entry. If seeding from abroad continues, it nullifies the point of any lockdown. It's not a coincidence that all other countries with relatively similar profiles to ours, but had closed borders (like Denmark, New Zealand) are now beginning to get back to business, while we still await our "surge."

Its a nightmare situation. Some sort of a balance has to come about.

I know there's o ford's trials due to start that was linked above and it looks good and hopefully it will be promising and it brings good news but I think we also need to plan for a 'what if' situation. What if it doesn't work.

I understand how important this lockdown and restrictions are but we can't live like this forever.

Thanks for explaining. Not my area of expertise. Very concerning that scientists in Wuhan studying these exact viruses and proving they could mutate to infect humans prior to outbreak.

It could of course happened naturally . I don’t know enough to know how likely one way or the other.

    Anyway stay safe.

In my opinion Fauci is very much regarded as the voice of truth and integrity to the majority of Americans. Trump can’t sack him without incurring huge political damage. Fauci has succeeded in getting the truth out without directly contradicting Trump but at the same time letting everyone know that Trump is talking through an orifice intended for other purposes.
Fauci is playing a very difficult game but so far he is playing it brilliantly.

And we won't of course. We need to buy time to get more ventilators, ICU's,PPE testing equipment, nurses and doctors trained to use ventilators etc.. that's what all this is about. I've no doubt the vaccine will take 18 months to 2 years at the very earliest and we aren't going to lockdown until then but iv'e also no doubt it won't be relaxed at the end of the next 3 weeks either.

My best guess as some random internet dumbass is current restrictions until mid May then a slight relaxation of that then lockdown again in July when it becomes obvious numbers are on the rise again rinse and repeat until the vaccine. That said maybe we'll get lucky and this will burn itself out in the summer who knows.

Austria / Denmark ! Look to have got a good grasp on infection rates. What have these two countries done to achieve this. I hear very little in the media. maybe this should be our Benchmark. If I can remember went on lockdown 1-2 weeks before us.

try and find something that will occupy your mind if possible.

Reading, think of some tasks you need to do,research things you are interested, listen to music, maybe some try some art, netflix series,

I dont know why people keep researching the virus at this stage.

I barely check the stats anymore or news about the virus.
No point looking at something constantly that gives bad news all the time.

Both governments are described as right wing populist parties. In some international metrics the current Danish government is even classed as far right.

    Coincidence?

Nice to finally see some well overdue love for right wing parties though.
