    Yeah, tough one to swallow alright.

    The way I see it is, the bmw dealer (or indeed any dealer) would need to offering me at least 2-3k over GMFV, which I expect they surely would do, just to get me in the door! But I’d be surprised to get much more than that. And that really isn’t “equity” at all.

    But if I didn’t have the trade in at all, I’d have a lot more flexibility and negotiating power in terms of straight deal discounts (I’d get that 2-3k “equity” regardless!), the possibility to import something from the uk myself, etc.

    I did very well 2 years ago with VW. Sold the R back to the dealers and cleared a nice few quid for myself after finance was cleared. Unfortunately I don’t see myself being so fortunate with bmw.

    Keeping the car and refinancing it doesn’t appeal much at all. I want something different (or maybe do without any car finance at all for a while).

    On the upside it is a very nice 4 series. Well spec’d, in an unusual colour. It would be an attractive purchase for someone at the right price, or indeed maybe the dealers would buy it back....

    I think manufacturers are going to have to come up with strategies to keep people rolling into new PCP deals in the form of incentives. They cannot afford a huge amount of people to hand cars back and just walk away. That's the logic anyway but BMW Ireland or BMW dealers have hardly been busting a gut to retain customers in the past with their offers and low ball trade in prices.

    Yeah it’s all the stories on here of BMW and their lowball trade in offers that has me thinking this way and preparing for the worst.

    Tbh another fresh Bmw doesn’t hold much appeal to me anyway.

    I'm not WFH much but mileage down to 250kms/week.....was 3 times that preCovid19 & I'm carrying nothing load wise.
    Was almost getting an estate but went for the Sorento as didn't want to be driving a fully loaded estate..... Rear window visibility etc etc etc. I don't carry heavy stuff...just bulky awkward stuff occasionally.
    I'll be getting 3 weeks out of the last tank of diesel.

    It's going to happen though. Loads of people in pcp are going to re-evaluate the importance of owning a new/nice car. Loads of household incomes have been severely hit.

    Even for people who have not been impacted are probably going to be less likely or give signing up to something a lot more thought. I hadn't even considered people in Joe's situation where the homeworking has meant the car is less essential, and I think a lot of jobs now that were never homeworking jobs are probably going to be 20-50% homeworkers now even when this c19 thing is over. Less time in a car for people will mean they will find it harder to justify spending money on it.

    Could actually be a good time to get back into another Golf R. With an economic downturn dealers could be very eager not to be stuck with these type cars so more willing to deal. A 420d might well be more attractive to a dealers in those circumstances than a Golf R.

    I'd have an R or tuned GTI over a 20 anything, i'd say the opposite will happen, lads won't care, they'll cut to the chase, if that 07 Targa on carzone drops 10k with your theory i'm going all in.
    There will be a massive sale on middle of the road cars...are you really going to be one of the ones to make it to the future and start worrying about 5/6mpg. Go hard or go home.

    I think we are going to have to get low deposit deals with affordable monthly if they are to sell anything soon.
    In these times, people are not going to drop a large chunk of cash but many would be happy enough to take on the monthly payments if worst case handing back should sh1t hit the fan again wouldnt result in huge loss of deposit.
    This is a motoring forum and pretty much everyone here is thinking car spending at the minute is foolish so i can only see that opi ion being much stronger within the general population.
    Small deposit and no equity at end lease type setup is probably the future.
    Personally, id still buy if the price is very favourable.
    Ive finance sorted since well before christmas sitting in bank but throwing maybe 15k cash with it doesnt look like a great idea at the minute.

    I wouldnt say its total idiocy to buy now. It just depends on the value for money, I'd say there will be some cars taking horrendous hits on depreciation over the next few months / year and others, where it wont be much or any worse than normal. In your good position, every day longer you wait, the value will just get better and better...

    It'd be mad to buy now even more so if your financing it. Read the EV form, some believe their cars are going up in value as we'll all be woke coming out of the cocooning, those boys are in for a rude awakening, there's already talk of taking it easy on ice manufacturing.
    Bought a 5 pack of stripey socks in Tesco the other day that's as much as I'm spending on non essentials until this is over and I think I'm in an ok position if we get out of this in 3mts.

    I was sickened with pcp after buying my 330e and went away from it after but would not say no in the future to the right car at the right rate, and with the right gmfv. Knowing your costs over three years and the ability to walk away.
    If leasing at reasonable rates became a thing here I would consider that too.
    I can understand though why you would like to get away from monthly payments.

    The few leasing examples I have seen while including servicing etc still seem dear enough esp if you must include VAT as well. Similar payments would close on buy the cars over 5 years.

    Bought a VW Tiguan last year on PCP at 0%, put in the min deposit and happy to pay the high monthly. No point in putting in my own cash as a deposit when getting zero interest rates.
    With the Tesla Model 3, put in a 2k deposit when I ordered the car and financed the rest. If things go tits up at least I've the least possible cash of my own in the cars. Thankfully as things stand we are both in jobs that are very busy and should remain that way through this crisis. Also no longer paying creche fees which is a nice saving but it's also money well spent!! Daddy day care every day is tough going!!

    Yes, I don’t think leasing for private individuals is viable here yet but in the U.K. there can be good deals.
    If in the future, minimal/zero deposits and very low interest rates were on offer I would be happy to do that.
    Digiman, your Tiguan is the kind of deal I mean. Zero percent and a good solid residual performer that will have equity at the end more than likely.
    The BMW deals that are out there are the opposite of this.
    With the model 3, is it pcp or hp and what’s the rate?
    How are you enjoying it?

    It was 4.9% HP through Telsa with AIB. Telsa don't do PCP on the Model 3 here yet. That's a cheaper rate than via the banks which I couldn't see any which offered less than 6%.

    Love the car, love driving it, a great buzz everytime you floor it from a standing start and the power when overtaking is just incredible. The charging has been effortless so far, was down at the Laya health clinic with the little one a few times this week, in there for about an hour and there is a free charger in the car park, basically topped up the car with enough electrons that covered the trip and that is on a slow enough 7kW charger. I know that is probably worth about a euro but just something about it that makes it worth more!!

    I ordered a chrome delete for it this evening so looking forward to giving that a go. The software updates are really cool, it's great having something to look forward to every month or so with some new features that they have added. For example the next update is coming out with a dash cam viewer that you can watch on the screen. It's surprising that it was never there but then again what other car has one of these. Imagine how much BMW would charge you for such a feature?

    The only thing missing is the cabin refinement of the 5 series which was nice and quiet and also just that bit bigger inside also.

    I have to disagree. On the one hand, the experts are telling us that we've bought the planet at least 5-10 years more and obviously oil consumption has plummeted, so there is less of a need to make the switch and there is less of a need to reduce CO2 because it's been reduced so much the past few months.

    There is the obvious point that many people simply won't have the money to change so ICE is going to hang around for longer, because even people who can afford to upgrade won't want to in order not to be seen to be rubbing their noses at those unfortunate enough to have lost their jobs, and yes to a certain extent most people will simply want to get back on their feet, so environmental concerns are going to play second fiddle to that.

    Working from home will definitely become more common so people will be doing fewer miles and again that reduces the pressures on CO2 emissions and again the need for an EV, because then people will only be driving at weekends, or long distances, and that obviously means you need range (which you don't get in an EV obviously despite what the fanbois say) and ICE is obviously vastly superior here.

    On the other hand, I don't think it will have gone unnoticed just how much cleaner the air is with hardly anyone driving, or the images of the Venice canals, or even heavily polluted cities such as Los Angeles. The evidence is overwhelming.

    I suspect what there will be a big emphasis on not so much CO2 (because we've a lot more time than we thought as a result of this pandemic), but certainly there will be a big clampdown on toxic pollutants like particulates, NOx and sulphur dioxide.

    That's not good news for ICE, especially diesel. Not good for manufacturing either.

    There was a refresh that bumped battery capacity over the summer but not sure it brought it up to 50km. My one gets 30km.

Seeing quite a few 2018 M-Sports doable for 28/29k. The 50km range would cover me for 3-4 days a week which appeals (~42km return).

    I only get about 25km at the moment, even less if it's very cold and maybe up around 30km in summer. But I've noticed that it varies a lot depending on traffic situation. Most of my driving is in suburbia with a lot of stopping and starting which seems to reduce range a lot even with recuperation. I've noticed if I'm out on a main road doing about 80-100km/h I seem to get a bit more bang for my buck.
