    GOOD

they don't have to fire them - put them into "furlough" , and possibly not pay them - but at least they'll have a job when this is over.

are people guaranteed to be taken back after a furlough period? I was put into a "furlough" period of 3 mths today. Can they just decide to not take you back after also ?

Sure: most Countries, in the face of austerity, chose to cut Healthcare, Welfare and other public services like Education.

And one could argue that austerity itself was a choice (IMHO the wrong choice) in the face of the 2008 economic crisis.

At this stage, I think the government needs to make a firm call on festivals to be cancelled perhaps out as far as September.

There are a lot of community organisations, promoters, commercial bodies and others holding off on pulling the plug as they’re not able to make a decision and also if they’re progressed and planned things be come more and more difficult to cancel.

There are events ranging from summer festivals, arts festivals, agricultural stuff, pride, etc etc all still pending.

I would really like to see a government advisory just asking organisers to postpone until autumn or hold off until 2021.

If things unexpectedly improve between now and September, and we can mingle again, then it would be better to have smaller scale events anyway and less of an expectation.

The key thing though is the government needs to give clear guidance and actually just ask people not to organise big events until autumn as this thing won’t be under control until at best late 2020.

Just not going to happen the Government have a responsibility to mange the economy as well , So they have absolutely no need to call things off in August when its still March

I was really hoping things would begin to turn in Italy by now. It’s a nightmare there.

Everything depends on how many health care workers get it, If its a large amount we are screwed,

Also at the moment id like to think the vast majority of people 65 or over are having little to no contact with anyone else, My own parents haven't just getting there shopping left in the porch, Ud be hoping in two weeks times there will not be many elderly getting newly infected at all ,( obviously some are already and don't know yet )

We had a housing crisis for a long time. Houses were too much and out of affordability for so many. Some adults lived at home because there was also rental problems. Rentals were few and far between and too much. The average where I was, 1400 a month.

Then over the past few weeks, colleges finished. There was something on rte last night about working from home. A woman had all 5 of her adult children move back home in recent weeks.

This idea of cocooning the elders is nonsense unless if you make a load of people homeless.

I'm following all the guidelines by the way and limiting going out outside of work but chances are I could probably pick it up and bring it home.

Anyone have hard numbers on how long for test results ? I keep seeing magic tweets about "new tests" that report in 15 mins or so.

Soothsayers aren’t really required to see that this isn’t going to be any different in a few months time without serious medical break through and that’s going to take time.

The economy is basically going to have to be restarted with massive fiscal stimulus when this is over. My concern is more about public safety.

Sadly the number of deaths will keep rising as there is an obvious lag between new cases being identified and people dying. Cases should be beginning to drop now, but deaths will keep going for a couple of weeks yet.

We need to see today's new case numbers.

My wife had sepsis on arrival at A&E not too long ago. I sincerely hope you are never in the situation as on your current form, you would be complicit in their death. It's rapidity is frightening.

I had it a few years back and it went from going to lectures to needing a lie down to my housemates ringing an ambulance in less than a day.

I think they have time and can easily go to the next date of April 19th. Doing it too soon is bad for people's mental well-being and there are activities currently planned to start up again in June.

One thing I have noticed the last few days is people are starting to become very irritable a few times this week I have seen people giving grief to shop assistants when asked to adhere to social distancing procedures the shop had implemented. In one instance one elderly enough man nearly lost the plot completely. The poor girls trying to do a hard enough job as it was without muppets giving her hassle:
Also seen It in tesco newbridge this morning when a woman was as asked to wait behind the line.

People will get used to it and it will become second nature after a while, I assume. There are always going to be eejits though.

Guff about stuff, and stuff about guff.

This seems interesting 1 ventilator can be shared with 4 people

One Canadian doctor managed to get 9 patients on the one ventilator.

Lung capacity and condition needs to be similar for it to work and when someone changes they need to be moved.

I'm not being smart, but did the Italian culture of greeting males and females with a hug and a kiss go against it? We are way more stand off-ish here for example.

Some basic predictions re timeframe for Ireland:

The 2nd and 3rd weeks of April will be the worst for us here.

The present shutdowns will be extended to the end of May.

There will be a partial relaxation of shutdowns at the beginning of June.

If that works out, almost everything (except some travel) will be back later in June.

I'm sure other people have much worse predictions than mine, but those are still my best guesses.

I like your predictions, but unfortunately Italy, Spain and the UK seemed to suggest otherwise. Its now endemic in those countries. That means it will be around for several months and contact tracing is now impossible for new cases.

When you are overwhelmed by contact tracing, the game is all but up. The Chinese, Hong Kong and Singapore were able to stay on top of contact tracing. European countries weren't.

    That's a key difference.

If we can keep new cases under 500 a day we have a hope. If we can't then contact tracing becomes impossible. You simply cannot trace people quick enough.

Yeah, any extensions to restrictions need to be done on a rolling basis.

If he was at top of queue and you where further back you can’t get it, not unless he has it and coughed on you or sneezed in your direction. Would have been nice if someone to explain to him what to do in a nice manner he is elderly and some don’t understand unfortunately
. Could you not have told him to contact his doctor

A 101 year old man has left hospital in Italy after surviving Coronavirus

    https://amp.cnn.com/cnn/2020/03/27/europe/101-year-old-coronavirus-scli-intl/index.html?__twitter_impression=true

Always important to mention the positive. Italy's rate of new infections is also gradually declining.
