Christ, as depressing and all as the overall situation is, this thread and the majority of the posts would put anyone whos very low completely over the edge. Any sort of half arsed bad news story is grabbed by some posters and put up in lights so they can have a **** over the misery they are trying to spread.

Ah now, you are a paddy come lately in this game. We have had several iterations of this lame trope already - from panic porn, posting with your lad in your hand, to one chap who was keen on calling people bed-wetters. And so having a **** over the misery just doesn't have an edge anymore. Sorry.

    Playing devil’s advocate here, but;

The John Campbell guy on YouTube who gets at least 100 thousand views a day. Who is he?

Why should he be listened to?

What are his qualifications in all this?

He’s not a virologist is he?

He's a nurse that holds a doctorate. He is NOT a doctor.

He claims to be 'evidence based' but in several of his videos starts pulling the likes of R0 numbers out of his arse.

In short, he isn't worth a damn listening to. At best he just regurgitates simple facts and figures you can get your own hands on. The rest is pure conjecture from a guy who is not an epidemiologist or similar.

    That's not what I've heard...

Machines are being prioritised for younger patients, because they don't have enough of them to go around.

But I'm sure they run out of everything, when a hospital is pushed to breaking point.

We're already running out of PPE, and this thing has only just started for us!

If PPE can run low at this point, I have no doubt we could run out of ventilators or other important equipment too. We already know this, as ICU doctors have said it in recent weeks!

Big delivery from China expected on/from Sunday.

Most Cancer treatments have been cancelled which is pretty poor. Is it now that someones life who has cancer is valued below that of someone with COVID. There was a 38yr old woman with 3 kids on the radio earlier who is only staying alive because of her chemo treatments but they have been cancelled indefinitely. Thats a bloody stupid trade off.
Are you sure? This can’t be true??
Yeah I don't believe that one bit.

Not unique to Ireland, I believe the UK has also postponed some chemo treatments. It is likely to be the case the world over.

It is not that their life has been deemed less important, more likely that doctors have decided that deliberately destroying their immune system right now is too risky.

830 new cases and 80 new deaths in the Netherlands today.

The largest number of daily deaths so far (up 30% in one day)

In Germany 43 more deaths today, by far the highest so far and deaths have been accelerating there now for the last 5 days.

So it looks like up to now we were testing the worried well and people who had got over the virus by the time the test was done? Hence the change
So the percentage could be way higher than it is and growing as that latter category plus 1000's untested are and were spreading like mad
Next 2 weeks will tell the tale

I think wel will be ok. Our numbers aren't to bad and that's without the effect of social distancing coming into play. I think in 2-3 months from now the number of dead will be lower than the flu.

That’s exactly why the best thing that any of us in high risk categories can do is to hide away from the world as much as we can. No one wants to chose who lives and who dies but that’s exactly what will happen if the virus gets out of control and our health services are overwhelmed. That’s not trying to be miserable, more trying to be realistic.

I know. I think theres going to have to be a point where we realise that we are different to other countries and start to look at how our population density can allow us reduce restrictions going forward.

Restrictions won't be reduced for a good while, at least 2 months I reckon. Or maybe even longer.

yeah not a fan of that guy at all. he's fine when he stays in his lane: basic hygiene and introductory level biology, but when he gets into epidemiology he's completely out of his depth and misinterprets data constantly. aside from that, most of his videos are just reading out news headlines and figures.

i also have little respect for anyone in the medical field who calls themselves a doctor who isn't actually a medical doctor. he's a nurse with a PhD. Two VERY different things.

So NI has only 209 confirmed case compared to Ireland 1,329 case (Before today numbers in REP), but they have more deaths than us....

They are only testing 40 a day up until this point, so it goes to show that the level of testing is crucial to understanding the numbers and spread.

Wales have 628 confirmed cases, with 22 deaths!!

He’s a hell of a lot better than some of the experts here and he has given a lot of very accurate information, he conveys messages from the most affected areas as he gets emails directly from the frontline of Italy etc.

He is independent, has no agenda or seek personal gain. His videos don’t even had ads enabled Nd he could be making a nice chunk of money off that with youtube You won’t see any HSE manager or Irish politician criticise the UK or US approach and he does both.

Like everything in the last few weeks related to this it’s important to note that things change quickly and what’s relevant today is wrong tomorrow.

I wouldn’t dismiss him like you have, I do t take it all as gospel, but he’s worth listening to.

Yeah I fear you maybe right. I'm starting to get worried that the restrictions may end up having a more negative effect than the virus.

Some people only want to hear the truth, if it's cheerful enough for them...

If it's too downbeat or sad (or even just realistic), they'd prefer if you spun them cheery upbeat fib instead! :P

Given that every celebrity/football player etc. in the UK seems to have the virus, does anybody believe that they only had 187 new cases today?

Dr's don't have doctorates. They have degrees in medicine , I think. So anyone with a doctorate is entitled to use Dr

at least we now have public contact tracing for one case...

So even if Charles completely recovers from the virus, during the incubation period he has been in contact with his 94 year old mother who presumably in turn has since been in contact with his 98 year old father who has known health issues. This may not end well for the Windsor Royals.

How can the restrictions end up having a more negative effect than the virus?

Economies can recover. The dead won't recover.
