We have to confront people that are not taking it seriously. Social pressure needs to be applied. The passive route won't work here, we are at war with the virus.

Well done with your calculations, it does indeed make you wonder why so many people 'posting here' criticise Boris & the UK so harshly in their approach to this unprecedented crisis.

You do realise they are only testing people hospitalised in the UK?

These figures are meaningless in this context.

Inform yourself more before posting horse manure commentary please.

To the self appointed experts everywhere saying lockdown. Stop. Our people will make the decision when they need to. 99% of people are now in pretty much lockdown. People are going to be depressed into oblivion with all this talk. I was on the phone to my parents last night and they were so upset at the idea of further measures on lockdown, they are already isolating but enjoy a short walk or two everyday to stay sane.

I know it won't happen but for everyones mental state can those championing lockdown stop and wait to be told. It's crazy.

There's a reason he is calling it the Chinese virus.

Will blame the Chinese when trying to deflect from how he sat on his hands for weeks when action was needed.

China blamed US military for the virus. (Media reported)
China tried to surpress news about the virus (media reported)
China imprisoned a doctor who tried to warn about the virus (media reported)

You just made up your version. Trump is an idiot but China is not your friend.

The numbers testing positive isnt a good thing to compare countries with at all. The numbers hospitalized, the amount in ICU and the number of deaths are the only things that matter.

Call out service - no need for shop

Same potential result as having a store open, you have someone visiting different houses, rather than the people visiting the shop.

Also if you only have a mobile and the sim or another component dies, how do you contact a service to have someone come to your home to repair/replace it?

Your hardly going to drop round to the neighbors to use their phone or ask them to make a call for you.

    That crossed my mind!

Look at every election they have over there, massive long queues at the polls, it would be madness to hold traditional elections there unless this whole thing somehow blows over. They may try to go to 100% postal voting but Their system is not ready for that as and they don’t have enough time to administer such a system before November, and those votes would still need to be counted manually...

Or they might try some kind of online voting which would be a constitutional crisis and the loser would fight the results in court (likely leading to the loaded Supreme Court declaring the republicans to be the winner no matter what)

By November the US will definitely be in some state of national emergency or just emerging from it. Either the vote will be suspended (for a year probably) or an election will be held that will have very little legitimacy. I think the former, but would not be surprised if the republicans use this as an opportunity to take 4 more years in the most chaotic ‘election’ in generations

    Chomsky(2017) on the Republican party

"Has there ever been an organisation in human history that is dedicated, with such commitment, to the destruction of organised human life on Earth?"

The UK simply do not know how many cases they have, they previously told people to self isolate if they thought they had it. Their numbers wilk ramp up hugely because they delayed any actions. A nurse posted a picture this morning of a crammed packed tube on her way to work this morning...the first morning of the lock down.

Seems like many of the people who don't want a full shut down are those who are already working from the comfort of their own homes.

The rest who can't work from home deserve to be safe too.

There is no such a thing as complete shutdown. Even if you try it you suddenly find that there is quite a lot of essential services which cant be shut down without pretty much instant economic and societal collapse.

And whith what is proposed as a shutdown - to leave essential services only coupled with helicopter money hyperinflation is inevitable. A lot of people will be chasing decreasing small range of products.

Vulnerable people needs to be protected and sheltered from this but the rest of us need to take as much precaution as possible and keep going.

Without a vaccine we, as in pretty much every country in the world, will have to do rolling lockdowns.
Do a major lockdown now to stem the tide, then partially lift it and watch the infection rate ramp up again.

Key is to manage it so it doesn't overwhelm the HSE.

So yes, lockdown now to stem the tide, additionally to condition people to get used to it for awhile.

If someone is standing foot from me in the supermarket , damn right I can control that with a bollocking. They will think about it the next time.

Why ? Because a small number of the population can't follow instructions or because the same people who tweeted all weekend about closing the pubs and are now tweeting non stop about a lockdown ?? The same people who probably panic bought and piled into the supermarkets the week before last.

We've been in a gradual lockdown anyway, more and more places are closing every day. More will probably be told to close today and other measures introduced but it's not going to be the lockdown you keep posting for.

Has anybody asked the government how many test kits they ordered and when they'll arrive?
How many are these rapid test kits?

It's not our place to go around confronting people and it certainly runs the risk of them not responding well to that. Refer it to people who can do something about it. I must be in the wrong part of the country all the time because I don't see anything like this.

    Not Your Ornery Onager

In the pot if you’re stuck.
Did you ever hear the saying “a Tyrone woman won’t buy a rabbit without its head for fear it’s a cat”.
    It’s an old proverb.
Now, there’s a bit of learning for ye.
I read recently (here?) that under French law rabbits must be sold with the head still on so that cat carcasses won't be put on sale...

Yeah they have and they now seem to have a constant supply. Cillian DeGascun was on SOR yesterday so might be something there. If that question about rapid kits hasn't been asked it will be.

No the Irish media is posting online happiness about the TOOTHFAIRY still being able to visit kids so don't worry. You couldn't make it up. They have lost all credibility.

The Irish media can no longer talk to adults about adult topics to its resorting to to talking to the nations toddlers instead. Lets see if the toddlers of Ireland tell them to do one.

I've had hassle/abuse because I call out people for littering, I have a pair so will continue doing it.
