Can anyone tell me (without just saying ‘Boris’) why Britain has x100 our death count despite having only x10 our population?

They started down the route of 'Herd Immunity' which only works when 60% of the UK population is infected. Thus Crufts, Cheltenham, concerts and football matches etc. were not cancelled.

They then changed their minds and decided to follow the consensus of what the rest of the world was doing... but the damage had already been done.

Boris is addressing the nation later this eve instead of his daily afternoon briefing. I wonder what he has to say apart from same usual stuff every single day.

    Cobra meeting in process.

"The prime minister is there with senior ministers with the exception of Matt Hancock, who is taking the emergency Coronavirus Bill through the House of Commons.

"All the signs are that the government is going to announce much tougher measures this evening. It's suggested that plenty of cabinet ministers are urging the prime minister to do this."

The absolute state of the London Underground today. Although from todays pics the damage is done, he would want to sort that out pronto.

But we were having a similar free-for-all until a little over a week ago? Not enough of a time lag to make the savage difference in death rates.

Another thing I would support is a lot of detail about infectees.

This is from the news today with google translate:

"Patient 119" , male, 29 years old, living in Binh Thanh district, working at BCG financial consulting company, 13th floor of Mplaza Saigon, 39 Le Duan Street, Ben Nghe Ward, District 1. After suffering from fever, cough, sore throat, March 20, admitted to FV hospital.

"Patient 120" , male, 27 years old, residing in district 2, living in Vietnam since 11/2. He is a foreign language teacher, in close contact with "patient 91" of Vietnam Airlines pilot, together to a number of restaurants, entertainment places, including Buddha bar. After the pilot confirmed positive, in the afternoon of March 19, he was isolated in isolation in District 2. I would support some flights for family reasons but other than that, people made their choice. Lots of my friends / colleagues etc. have left already.. I made a conscious decision to stay.

I understand your point, but the Irish government doesn't have the capacity to run evacuation flights and it would be a huge burden on the state in this time of crisis.

They have a responsibility to ensure the island has adequate air connectivity. If they need to ban certain high-risk nationalities so be it, but they need to maximize the ability of Irish nationals to return home in an emergency.

It's not good enough to say f*ck 'em (although some posters will surely reply to this post with just that sentiment).

Again, I hope it doesn't come to it you're in dire need to get home at any stage. I think a 'get your butt home now if you need to come' alert could have been sent at least early on this month.

Big but expected increase I would say. As before, more testing means more positive results. RIP to the two who passed away.

I'm more or less in lockdown for the past week.

I'm lucky enough to be able to work from home. I go out to the shop only when absolutely necessary, not to get a coffee, but to get the weekly essentials or to go to the chemist.

I go to my Mother's house and bring in the coal and briquettes etc. for her, all while she stays miles away from me as I'm passing through.

And that's it, I go nowhere else unless absolutely necessary.

    That's what a lockdown is.

And if everyone was this sensible we wouldnt need the upcoming measures. Other half and I are the same, both working from home. Despite the haters, we got in a months supply of everything we need and have zero need to leave the house. I never worried about stock running out in the shops just didnt fancy being coughed and sneezed on in Lidl and risk infection while I am growing a human :D

Took the dog out yesterday to a place that daytrippers thankfully don't know about. Didnt meet another sinner. The traffic, illegal parking and general chaos in the Dublin Mountains was ridiculous. By all means go out, but why does everyone go to the same spots?

If the rubbish left behind by them was any idication of their personal hygiene or general levels of decency and consideration for others then I would call into question how much they can be trusted to maintain distance and implement hygiene measures.

The Department of Health says two more people have died after being diagnosed with Covid-19, bringing the total number of deaths in Ireland to 6.

A further 215 new cases of the virus have also been confirmed. This brings the total number of cases here to 1,121.

    How is this spiralling?
215 is still well below the 30% that we’ve been expecting

215 posts to be added to the thread giving today's case total, a new record....

+23.62% - so not as good as yesterday but still trending down off 30%+

I think that the next announcement will push the date to "After the Easter Holiday".

I don't think that they'll announce an end to the School/College year right away , they'll do it progressively.

In reality , no one is likely to be going back to School/College this year , with a possible limited solution for Leaving Certs.

Colleges will shift to online exams etc. to finish out the year...

They will try to get leaving cert done but other then that I say they know it is over for all school years. Will it mean people will stay in the year there in for primary, secondary, college. My nephew be gutted to say in primary school one more year

215 new cases is nothing to be surprised about.
We'll be getting far more from now on thanks to people not doing social distancing.

Very sad with had our highest deaths in 1 day. RIP

Which is below the predicted number

We were always going to have cases

Anything below the predictions of 15000 is a Positive
