Between 136 and 272 new cases for us represents the gap between 15% (the last 2 days) and a 30% increase in cases.

See what today brings. 3 days at 15% would be positive.

Can anyone tell me (without just saying ‘Boris’) why Britain has x100 our death count despite having only x10 our population?

Did anyone else hear that Leo is to address the nation again today?

I don't think flying home is a right. If Ireland stopped flights from Vietnam, I wouldn't think anything of it. I'd be happy it was taking serious steps to combat it.

I doubt you'd be pleased that the Irish government dynamited routes to home if god-forbid the pandemic got particularly severe and your safety was under threat, or even (god-forbid also) a family member was going to expire. Heavens, we don't know the social fallout of this in any country, we could see blood on the streets in x, y or z country (without wishing to sound too dramatic). There's an important balance to be struck to ensure some level of air connectivity.

Questions, would and should be asked of government if that happened.

The New Zealand government sent a very clear message to their nationals to get their as*ses home for that very reason.

He's back to tell us off about the queue outside Leo Burdock's in Howth.

Anyone with any idea when they will officially extend the schools and colleges past the 29th? We all know they won't go back but without confirmation it's hard to make any decisions on the off chance something changes. The longer this goes on the more chance I will run out of money. I have a job offer, I can work through this crisis with, but I can't accept it while going to college.

Decision has to be made early for people. You can't leave it all to the last minute.

In fairness that is a change from the initial release where runny nose, sneezing is rare....very hard to keep up with it all tbh.....

Not necessarily. Claire Byrne never said what symptoms she had, she never said she had a runny nose or sneezing. Going by the show she announced it on she didn't have either. She just said she had cold like symptoms, she could have and probably did have symptoms that both Coronavirus and the cold has.

Presumably tomorrow, after the steering committee meets.

Flight cancellations will follow travel bans.

Which means that Irish nationals caught in difficult countries will be less likely able to make their way home, as is their right.

And before you say it, I'm not speaking with particular sympathy about dim backpackers who took off to South America in Feb or early March when it was fairly clear that a pandemic was underway.

Do we really want a situation if there is a second explosion in China or lets say Egypt and Irish nationals cant travel home to relative safety?

The government perhaps could have made a stronger statement about the necessity of traveling home before the window on international flights is closing, particularly those Irish based in high-risk or underdeveloped nations. The writing was on the wall since February.

    It's a sacrifice I'm willing to make.

Just did some shopping here in Portlaoise. Excellent observance of social distancing in the town. Vast majority of people seem to be doing their bit.

There’s nobody in the country expecting them to go back then just take it as a certainty school is out u till September at the earliest please

Because they have many multiples more infected than they have currently tested for

we closed schools and implemented social distancing a week earlier. That helped

If money is needed, and with the amount of people looking for jobs in the near future, I would go with accepting job and deferring college.

Easy for you to say if you're safe at home in isolation. Ireland still has a responsibility to its nationals abroad, whether you like that or not.

There unfortunately I say be at least 1 day with a big spike. Not that I would find that weird but we will have some on here showing things are not working. It will take another week so see how it is working. There will probably be more powers like enforce closure of pubs and closure notices on cafe's (who can have social distancing) not enforcing social distancing. Not sure how close we are on powers from Gardai to clear groups of people though I did see they were stopping people in Kilkee and Lahenich this weekend

I think we’ll be doing well to have kids back in school for September to be honest

I would support some flights for family reasons but other than that, people made their choice. Lots of my friends / colleagues etc. have left already.. I made a conscious decision to stay.

Allowing flights with mandatory quarantines in facilities seems like the best bet for many countries.

I think there's a big spike too. More testing. Every country had them, even 10 days after preventative measures etc.

Getting the test won’t necessarily save your life. We would presumably have a similar number of cases, percentage wise as the UK, yet their death rate is shocking and ours is not.

    Thanks for your reply.

So really. probably for the next year at least a vaccine will not be ready.

With that in mind , If you are fit , on the right side of 50 years old, dont smoke and have a BMI under 40.
Ye will most likely be grand. And after getting it. and recovering, you could help those older folk without risk.

    That sounds dodgy advice.

A BMI of 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight. A BMI of 30 and above is considered obese. Individuals who fall into the BMI range of 25 to 34.9, and have a waist size of over 40 inches for men and 35 inches for women, are considered to be at especially high risk for health problems.

I think that the next announcement will push the date to "After the Easter Holiday".

I don't think that they'll announce an end to the School/College year right away , they'll do it progressively.

In reality , no one is likely to be going back to School/College this year , with a possible limited solution for Leaving Certs.

Colleges will shift to online exams etc. to finish out the year...

Down to a few things but can be sown up in we will do things our own way and not anybodies elses and maybe that included a snub to EU health officials. Also isn't Ireland doomed as we do not have a health system.
