Nct test centres would be ideal for covid testing.

I've heard the lifts aren't safe in those centres. You don't want to have one collapse while there's a vulnerable patient jacked up on it for a test. :D

Had to run an errand into tesco and also the chemist here in Sligo. No queues in tesco (thank feck) but the chemists was a bit more interesting.

Was greeted inside the door (which is being kept permanently open) by a girl in a kiosk protected by glass/plastic. She asked me a bunch of questions about my general health before allowing me to proceed any further. There was literally only one other person inside anyway, but I assume customer numbers are being restricted.

The town in general is extremely quiet. Whatever about the rest of the country, Sligo has definitely gotten the message loud and clear.

    Kudos to that Chemist/pharmacy

Always find it lame when an Irish person call the Gards "cops".

    Who really cares? ðŸ˜

If that's your biggest issue on a 'Covid-19' thread? Well, maybe that's quite lame in itself.

And don't you mean An Garda Síochána?

Not model at all but I do see the logic of the advice. There are many things we have no control over in this but there are quite a few we do have control over. I think mental coping skills are as important as anything else we have to do during this and an ability to process what information we get to reach some semblance of calm is vital.

Each days delay in results causes in increase in community infection even though the people are in isolation.

This is as a result of the depth of the contact tracing. If it is known that you have been in contact with a positive case then your contacts are traced. If you have been in contact with a suspected case (awaiting results), then your contacts are not traced.

I am speaking from personal experience here, as no one has been in touch with me even though I was in contact with someone who was contact traced. If the original person had their results and they were positive, I would have been contacted as well.

Its a big factor, despite your post saying its not.

My sister has a fever and was told to self-isolate and wait for a test in approx 10 days.
She asked will her family also have to self-isolate.
Doctors advice - “No, unless they develop symptoms”

    WTF

Was listening to a local podcast here from a journalist and they know one of the people tested positive for covid spent their days in the pub watching cheltenham. That's one large group to trace

    WTF
This is exactly the issue: people need to stay at home if at all possible, otherwise testing becomes exponentially more difficult.

Anyone got stats based on population density? That might be a good indicator.

There probably are stats. What I am getting from this though is the spread is faster through cities. So whereas a rural dweller might infect 1 or 2 others, a city dweller is likely to infect many more. Which is why its critical for Dublin residents to respect social distancing and isolation particurly after coming back from somewhere like the UK or New York.

The pictures from Spain is heartbreaking. Did our government see them at all? We need a total lockdown except for essential services.

Luckily we have a sea separating us (not talking about NI)

I asked mine. He'll read meters that are outdoors, like mine. Otherwise it's a card.

They aren't plentiful in supply. There is no point in using them when most people wouldn't have a clue how to put them on correctly.

Our healthcare staff need the supply more than we do, unless you have the virus it is pointless wearing one.

One of the most patronising statements to go around the media is the one that people dont know how to use FFP2 and FFP3 masks.

I am asthmatic and I use them year round for farming tasks. A 6 year old could be shown how to use one in 2 minutes. Wash your hands thoroughly before putting it on, and wash your hands thorough before taking it off. Hardly rocket science.

For all we are doing to stop the spread in developed countries, wtf is going to happen when it kicks off bad in Africa and Bangladesh and such places? No chance the virus can be contained in these places. They will just have to close borders to these countries for a long time (a lot of people will love this decision however!).

So how do you know if they haven't ordered PPE for staff?

Do you also not think that they might be hard to get during this time?

This is an unprecedented and rapidly changing situation and people within government and the HSE are dealing with situations that they have never had to manage before.
Overall I think good plans are in place. Hospital beds are ready, testing plans are in place and people have been impressed with the process, as reported here.

People on the internet are demanding perfection, instant lockdowns.
Instant tests for entire population with instant results.

It's just not going to happen and I think people with keyboards with very limited information apart from anecdotal or some website should really stop all these demands.

I work in a govt dept dealing with this and know exactly what I’m saying ... constant fuk ups, misinformation , telling us to do one thing one second and sending afew more circulars later in the day contradicting the info ....the top haven’t been working together or providing clear instruction to their staff and actually trying their best to keep us in the dark ... ridiculous carry on

I wasn't attacking the poster. I'm making the point that it's very easy to criticise things after the event.

Also, maybe you should read the charter here about back seat moderation if you're so worried about people sticking to the rules.

Lots of captain Foresights who got relentlessly called doom mongers etc. A bit of balance would be nice. Calling people "captain hindsight" is derogatory and doesn't add to the conversation. It now appears that those people were ostrich with heads in the sand about the scale of the problem.

You cant please everyone mainly if you are in leading position.
This Trump obsession is getting really tiresome.
Trying to compare Trump to any other leader you just named there is mind boggling.

What about Xi Jinping, President of China?

In my opinion, at least Trump is subjected to media scrutiny and constitutional constraints. I don't think the same can apply to Xi. Xi handling of the initial coverups, playing down the seriousness of the virus and spreading "rumors" about the origin of the virus, etc. When was Xi last press conference since the crisis started?

Clearly we would. What's the point in fighting the virus when you allow more potential cases in. It would be an unwinnable fight.

+ In a pinch we can actually feed ourselves, which the UK most certainly can't. If their borders were actually cut off they would have hungry bellies.

I will probably be lambasted for this, but,

We could find ourselves with Britain as the best friend of us if things went to ****, we have possibly food surplus here we could export to England, England still has huge coal reserve that it has stopped mining, also it has oil and gas, and operating Nuclear facilities. We are already hardwired to England to receive power.

If you look at the two Islands strategically without national anthems and flags waving, we could be very complimentary to each other and have pretty much what we need between us to continue with a decent survival of our peoples.

Ireland has the food while England has the power, trade our food surplus for essential energy.

Lets hope we don’t get to that point.

LĖ EITHNE returned to service and berthed in Cork on Friday to be utilised as a Testing Centre for Covid-19.

This makes an ideal base for testing and this will greatly help in getting through the vast backlog of outstanding tests.

Naval Personnel will be equipped to carry out testing.

I think it's important to keep things in perspective, we have a population of 4.9 million they have 10.25 million so it's not that much more than the result of 191 we had last Thursday, having a land border with Spain isn't helping them.
